Auld Lang Syne

Duration: 1st January – 31st January 2020
Number of books: 7
Hosted by: Crazy Challenge Connection

As much as I love “Auld Lang Syne” it does make me feel a bit sad. I’ve chosen two recordings for your listening enjoyment while completing this challenge – Mairi Campbell and The Tenors.

7/7 Complete

1. Robert Burns wrote the words to “Auld Lang Syne” in 1788, although he himself attributes some of the verses to lots of old Scottish folk songs that had never previously been written down. He meant the words to be sung to a folk tune called Roud #1694.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book of poetry (must be 150+ pages) OR read a book that involves music in some way; tell us how.The Poetry of Emily Dickinson by Emily Dickinson

2. “Auld Lang Syne” roughly translates to “for old times’ sake.” The song is all about preserving old friendships and looking back over the events of the year. It evokes a sense of belonging and fellowship, tinged with nostalgia.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Reread one of your favorite books OR read a book about long ago friends reuniting. – A Match Made in Bed by Cathy Maxwell

3. It is a much-loved Scottish tradition to sing the song just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Everyone stands in a circle holding hands, then at the beginning of the final verse (‘And there’s a hand my trusty friend’) they cross their arms across their bodies so that their left hand is holding the hand of the person on their right, and their right hand holds that of the person on their left.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book whose cover shows a circle or a pair of hands; post the cover OR read a book that takes place in Scotland. – To Marry a Scottish Laird by Lynsay Sands

4. The song has become a New Year’s tradition in countries the world over. Not only is the song sung on New Year’s but it may be sung at funerals, graduations, or any ceremony of leaving or ending. The international Scouting movement ends a jamboree with “Auld Lang Syne.”
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book in which any type of special occasion is being celebrated; tell us what OR read a book in which a funeral takes place. If Ever I Should Love You by Cathy Maxwell (marriage / wedding)

5. There are a total of five verses and the English version varies slightly from the original Scottish version. Though ‘auld’ gets translated as ‘old’ in the first verse, the chorus leaves the original ‘auld’ in place.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

II
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

III
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

IV
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

V
And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book that has been translated; tell us the original and the translated language OR read a book that has a “5” in its original publication year; tell us the year. – Perfect for the Beach by Lori Foster, Janelle Denison, et al. (2005)

6. The tune to which “Auld Lang Syne” is sung is much disputed over who actually wrote it, and it is not the Roud #1694 to which Burns originally set it (but it’s close). The Scots traditionally sing the song at a much faster tempo than Americans associate with the melody. George M. Cohen deliberately borrowed the first line for one of his versus of “You’re a Grand Old Flag” (But should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag.)
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book that seems to flow exceptionally fast or exceptionally slow; tell us which OR read a book that mentions or refers to another book within its text; tell us the book being referenced.Tarnished Knight by Bec McMaster

7. “Auld Lang Syne” has been recorded multiple times by multiple artists. Guy Lombardo with his Royal Canadians performed it in 1939 on New Year’s Eve. He is often credited with popularizing the song in United States. Lombardo’s version is played in NYC’s Times Square immediately after the huge ball drops.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book by a Canadian author; be sure to post the author link OR read a book that takes place in New York City. – The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X

Synopsis

Werewolves, vampires, witches, voodoo, Elvis—and weddings

An “ordinary” wedding can get crazy enough, so can you imagine what happens when otherworldly creatures are involved? Nine of the hottest authors of paranormal fiction answer that question in this delightful collection of supernatural wedding stories. What’s the seating plan when rival clans of werewolves and vampires meet under the same roof? How can a couple in the throes of love overcome traps set by feuding relatives—who are experts at voodoo? Will you have a good marriage if your high-seas wedding is held on a cursed ship? How do you deal with a wedding singer who’s just a little too good at impersonating Elvis? Shape-shifters, wizards, and magic, oh my!

Thoughts

I started reading this collection just before my best friend got married. I kind of figured that it was just a suitable kind of anthology to be reading when I too, was experiencing much of the wedding insanity that tends to surround such a fun day. And, it was nice to know that no matter what happened… nothing could go as badly wrong as many of the weddings in this collection.

There is something about weddings that seems to bring out the best and worst in people. So much pressure and stress for just one day which always blows my mind… but most people don’t have to deal with the supernatural. The characters in these stories do. And some of the battles they face are just… well, ridiculous. And difficult. And so much fun to read about.

Most of the authors in this collection I have on my shelves. Which made this a really good collection to read. Not only did I not then add a hundred different books to my wish list, but I often had the pleasure of revisiting worlds that I already have on my shelves. And the few I didn’t recognise? Well, they’ve quickly found their way on my to buy next list…

Synopsis

An incredibly sexual short story filled with intense innuendos and aliens.

Thoughts

I felt so very, very confused while I was reading this. So I figured that it might be a good idea to just share with you the dot points that I wrote as I was reading this. I’m not even sure I can make sense of what I was writing… I’m not sure I made sense of what I was reading… but it was fun regardless!

  • Not sure if this is about sex or birth. Seems gross either way.
  • SHE is giving birth to hummingbirds. And there was something about doves.
  • HE is now pregnant (???)
  • Basically, this story is fucked and I’m only on page 2.
  • Every single sentence in this is super, super, intensely sexual. Like wow.
  • The sexuality is ACTUALLY making me uncomfortable.
  • The child is being rode (or is it ridden?)
  • Alright, I’m THINKING that this short story is about immortality that we achieve in the next generation. I’m gonna think of it like that… this was WAY too weird.

Synopsis

Is God in the machine – or out to lunch? It’s anybody’s guess.

English professor and aspiring novelist, Grace Warner spends her days teaching four sections of “Beowulf for Cretins” to uninterested students at one of New England’s “hidden ivy” colleges. Not long after she is dumped by her longtime girlfriend, Grace meets the engaging and mysterious Abbie on a cross-country flight. Sparks fly on and off the plane as the two strangers give in to one night of reckless passion with no strings attached, and no contact information exchanged.

Back home at St. Albans, the college rocks Grace’s world when it announces the appointment of a new president – the first woman in its fabled 165-year history. Cue Abbie – and cue Grace’s collision course with a neurotic dog named Grendel, a fractious rival for tenure, and a woman called Ochre in what very well be a final shot at happiness.

Thoughts

This story is sweet, fun and not one that I’m going to forget anytime soon. It’s a fairly easy read, but one that still completely sweeps you away. Makes you forget about reality. I spent a perfect afternoon reading about Grace, Abbie and their neurotic dog while my neurotic dogs were piled on top of me. There was just something completely innocent and sweet about this story… not what I would normally claim for a romance. Mostly they tend to be a lot more lustful.

Sadly, there aren’t many LGBTQI stories on my shelves. Yet, every time I’ve run across one, I’ve found that it is brilliant and unforgettable. Maybe because they’re not so common-place, and it is more difficult to have them published… whatever it may or may not be, it’s not a sub-genre that often finds its way to my shelves. And, in fact, I think this was the first LGBTQI romance that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. It was kind of life changing to be honest. I’m going to now find every single Ann McMan book I can.

An obsession with books is obvious in the amount that I read… but I also love to write, and reading a story about someone who has that same literary obsession was really relatable. Everything about Grace is relatable and makes her impossible to not to love. Then, there’s Grendel. A dog that is damaged, neurotic and completely loveable. Although, I do find every dog I meet ridiculously loveable… whether in person or on print.

Abbie was also a loveable character. However, I found that I related to Grace’s awkward mannerisms and kind of lost feeling way more. The more put together woman is someone that I aspire to be… but I think I’ll forever be more like Grace… kind of bumbling through life in a somewhat confused way. But always stumbling into a happily ever after. At least, that’s what I’m hoping for.

Synopsis

It’s the marriage of the season. Until a man objects, and then falls to his death. The bride goes missing and the groom and friends discover a secret that will shock everyone.

Thoughts

I’ve never really understood why people are happy to have that unless anyone objects part in their wedding vowels. If I had that in mine and someone objected, I’d probably want to march right up and sock them. I’ve also never been to a wedding that has that in the ceremony. But, it does make for a good literary tactic. Something that adds a nice sense of drama and suspense. Plus, the perfect moment for a spurned lover, crazy person, whatever to interrupt the proceedings.

There was a sense of completing the circle in this story – it starts and ends with pretty much the same scene. Just the final part there is a little more understanding about who the bride actually is. I really loved how this was a full circle – there was a bit of a humorous, poetic sense to the tale. And a much needed sense of closure that I don’t often find in short stories.

I’m so excited that this is part of a series. As I was reading it, I was hoping that it was – there was just something really interesting and fun about the world that was being built. Although, the series is just another short story… still, I get to revisit Kit and Olivia!
