1. Read a book set in the past. 2. Read a book as old or older than you. 3. Read an award winning book or bestseller. – American Gods by Neil Gaiman
This month is the culmination of many of our challenges over the past several months. We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about astronauts, space, and all things celestial! Stay tuned for one of the most exciting moments in history – the moon landing!
8/8 Complete
1. Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 13:32 UTC (aka GMT). The Apollo spacecraft had three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the three astronauts, and the only part that returned to Earth; a service module (SM), which supported the command module with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and a lunar module (LM) that had two stages – a descent stage for landing on the Moon, and an ascent stage to place the astronauts back into lunar orbit. 🚀 Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are CM, SM, or LM (exact match only, no reversals) OR read a book that occurs during the summer months (June, July, August) OR read a book with a 5 in its total page count. – Cravings by Laurell K. Hamilton, Mary Janice Davidson, Eileen Wilks & Rebecca York (358 pp.)
2. Three American men were onboard Apollo 11. The commander was Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was the lunar module pilot; both of these men would walk on the moon’s surface. Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon’s surface. 🌚 Read a book that is third in a series (tell us the series’ name) or the third book published by an author OR read a book whose title starts with a letter in either EAGLE or COLUMBIA (ignore a,an,the) OR read a book whose author’s first name is 4 letters. – Persuasion by Jane Austen
3. The LM was named Eagle after the motif which was featured prominently on the mission insignia. The CM was named Columbia after Columbiad, the giant cannon that launched a spacecraft (also from Florida) in Jules Verne’s 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon. It also referenced Columbia, a historical name of the United States. 🌎 Read a book with an eagle or any bird shown prominently on its cover; post the cover OR read any novel by Jules Verne OR read any book takes place Washington, D.C. – Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne
4. After being launched by the Saturn V’s third stage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for three days until they entered lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969 at 20:17 UTC/GMT; they landed on the moon’s “Sea of Tranquility.” Viewers around the world heard, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” 🌘 Read a book in which a character takes a long journey OR read a book in which some type of historic first occurs (tell us what) OR read a book that takes place during the 1960’s. – Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
5. Six hours later on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC/GMT, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step onto the moon’s surface. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later. Armstrong’s first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. He described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Initially the quote was reported as “one small step for man…” Armstrong reported that he had said “for a man” and the quote was revised. ☄️ Read a book published in 2019 OR read a book that starts each chapter with a quote OR read a book that has MAN in its title (does not have to separate, but should be intact). – What I Like About Me by Jenna Guillaume
6. Aldrin and Armstrong planted the American Flag in the moon’s surface in view of a live tv camera. President Richard Nixon was able to speak to them via telephone-radio transmission which Nixon called “the most historic phone call ever made from the White House.” Armstrong and Aldrin got busy collecting samples from the moon. Two types of rocks were found in the geological samples: basalt and breccia. Three new minerals were discovered in the rock samples collected by the astronauts: armalcolite, tranquillityite, and pyroxferroite. Armalcolite was named for the three spacemen. 🚀 Read a book in which a real US President is mentioned (please copy the relevant text and give its location) OR read a book with a full moon or any type of flag on its cover (post the cover) OR read a book in which something significant is discovered; tell us what. – Dates from Hell by Kim Harrison, Lynsay Sands, Kelley Armstrong & Lori Handeland
7. After more than 21 1⁄2 hours on the lunar surface, in addition to the scientific instruments, the astronauts left the following behind: an Apollo 1 mission patch in memory of astronauts Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom, and Edward White, who died when their command module caught fire during a test in January 1967; a memorial bag containing a gold replica of an olive branch as a traditional symbol of peace; and a silicon message disk carrying goodwill statements by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon along with messages from leaders of 73 countries around the world. The disk also carries a listing of the leadership of the US Congress, a listing of members of the four committees of the House and Senate responsible for the NASA legislation, and the names of NASA’s past and present top management. 🌍 Read a book in which a main character leaves something significant behind (tell us what) OR read a book in which each title word’s first letter may be found in GOODWILL STATEMENTS (a,an, and the DO count; 3 word minimum) OR read a book in which a serious accident occurs (tell us what). – Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil
8. The astronauts used Eagle’s ascent stage to lift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. They jettisoned Eagle before they performed the maneuvers that propelled them out of lunar orbit on a trajectory back to Earth. They returned to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24 after more than eight days in space. For each of the three astronauts, this trip had been their second time into space and would also be their last. ☄️ Read a book that takes place in any country that borders the Pacific Ocean (tell us where) OR read a book where several steps/stages must be completed before getting a final product or result (briefly tell us what) OR read a book that is 8th in a series (tell us the series). – The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair (following a cooking recipe)
