Series: Alex Craft #1
Rating Out of 5: 5 (I will read this again and again and again)
My Bookshelves: Fae, Ghosts, Grim reapers, Paranormal romance

Synopsis

Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say.

As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself – who happens to look fantastic in jeans – nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high-profile murder when she’s attacked by the “shade” she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around…

To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something – though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex. But Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer who wields a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life…and her soul.

Thoughts

I’ve read this book more times than I can count. I actually am at a point where I need to buy myself a new copy… it’s just starting to fall apart quite drastically. There is just a wonderful feeling about this tale. A sense of coming home just encompasses me whenever I open the spine of this book. Alex is an amazing heroine, the storyline is full of octane and makes your heart skip a beat. And the whole tale just generally sweeps you off your feet from the very first moment…

Normally I’m not a huge fan of love triangles – they feel kind of forced, and a little bit indulgent at times if I’m being honest. Yet, there is something about Price’s writing that makes me… not mind them. For Alex, the triangle with Falin and Death is just starting to form. And it doesn’t feel like a self-indulgent, faked out story where the girl is just desirable. Rather, it is the forming of two different relationships and the ways in which they expand. Falin and Death are two different characters, ones that will draw you in and leave you wondering who Alex will ultimately choose…

I have heaps and heaps of urban fantasy books on my shelves (it’s probably the biggest section if I’m being honest). And most of them deal with witches, magic, fae, or some kind of approach to this. However, I don’t have any books which have reapers, death and grave witches as a feature. Which makes this series and book even more special. There is only one other series that has a woman who is capable to seeing death and with that strong a connection to death – Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. I love the uniqueness and wonderful way that this story is approached. After all, Alex is a wonderful enigma, one that I want to find more and more out about.

This is one of those wonderfully fast paced urban fantasies. It is a great story on its own, but it also helps to set up the world of Alex Craft and all of the shenanigans that are about to follow. It is one of those stories, that no matter how many times I read it, I will find something else to enjoy. Something else that I didn’t know last time. And even though I mostly remember the storyline with each rereading… I still feel surprised and unable to put the book down with each rereading.

Falling Under Love by Langley Gray

Title: Falling Under Love
Author: Langley Gray
Series: The Socialites #1
Rating Out of 5: 5 (I will read this again and again and again)
My Bookshelves: Chic lit, Contemporary, Contemporary romance
Dates read: 8th March 2021
Pace: Fast
Format: ARC, eBook, Novella
Publisher: Langley Gray
Year: 2021
5th sentence, 74th page: She couldn’t imagine he’d go to all the effort of declining each of her calls so quickly.

Synopsis

A billionaire romance – reimagined.

Winnie grew up in fortune and infamy and now wants nothing to do with her family’s dirty money. She’s determined to break away from the Whitman name and is well on her way to funding her new nonprofit, without any help from her family connections.

Winnie has been too focused on her work to make time for love until one rainy night she runs into a stranger while trying to catch a cab. Winnie and the stranger are so taken with one another, they forget to exchange contact information.

When her friends find out that “too busy for love” Winnie is showing interest in someone, they hatch a plan to remedy the missed connection. But will Winnie have any idea what to do when love comes her way? And will the stranger on the street distract her from her goals, or will he turn out to be more than just a pair of pretty eyes?

A story of finding love with best friends by your side to help you through it.

This is the first in a series following four single best friends who are all billionaires in their own right. This standalone book follows one of the ladies: Winnie Whitman, as she fumbles her way into love.

Thoughts

I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely adored the ARC I received of The Flyaway Bride, and since I couldn’t get my hands on a copy in Australia, I ended up emailing the author. She is amazing and sent me a copy of the first book in this series. It’s taken me a little while… but I finally managed to get around to reading this! And it was absolutely amazing! I loved Winnie’s story and getting to know her that much better left me smiling like a fool.

I don’t come from money or privilege, so I can’t imagine what it must be like to question every relationship and wonder why people are talking to me / trying to bond with me. It made it a little heartbreaking that Winnie had to constantly contend with such a reality. And that it was a misunderstanding of this exact nature that threw a spanner in the works.

There is a beautiful fate feeling to this whole story. One that makes you believe that Zane and Winnie are just meant to be together. After all, from the very first moment they just keep… tripping over one another. And, even though there is a little bit of a fight on Winnie’s side not to succumb… it’s not much of a fight at all.

This was a beautiful, adorable and wonderful story. One that I just couldn’t put down and forget about. It left me feeling happy and content. Which, for me, is what a good romance is all about. A lovely diversion from reality for a while.

Synopsis

When the world learns who she is, he’ll die for her without question, but what if she lives? What if he does?

Thoughts

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I’m slowly getting used to reading books on my Kobo. And it’s stories like this that help draw me in and make me want to read ebooks. They may never be my favourite form of literary enjoyment, but they are definitely growing very happily on me. There was something amazing and wonderful about Madbury’s story and I can’t wait to read more tales of The Sevens!

I love that one of the drivers for Haley throughout this story is her love for her sister. Although they are somewhat estranged, she is still trying to find her and putting everything at risk just to save her baby sister. As an older sister, this was such a beautiful and realistic portrayal of what it is like to have a younger sibling. Even in the moments when I have felt distanced from my sister (which all siblings go through), just like Haley, I still would have moved heaven and earth to find her. And the fact that within the epilogue, it is clear that Penny also feels the same about her big sister… it’s just beautiful.

The immediate reaction between Haley and Lucas was nice. But what I liked the most was the way that they both got to know each other and worked towards each other in their acceptance of their attraction. Sometimes it can be a bit on the nose having a story in which immediate attraction means immediate love. In the case of this story, the immediate attraction was tempered by their willingness to get to know each other. It’s incredibly fun and beautiful.

At first I thought that this was a witch – vampire kind of story. The fact that it’s not, and the Seven find other ways to prolong their life was intriguing. I loved how Madbury built this amazing world and lore in such a subtle and unique way. It helps to draw you further and further into her world. I can’t believe that I didn’t get the chance to read the prologue before this novel though, I’d be interested to see how the world was built from the very first.

Splintered Stars is a fantastic paranormal fantasy story. it is filled with magic, mayhem and conspiracies. There is also that wonderful dose of lust and love throughout the story. this may be a paranormal romance story, but it was the conspiracy and sibling relationship that I loved the most… and I can’t wait to read the next story and find out what happens to Penny! And which Seven she falls for…

Marry in Haste by Anne Gracie

Overview
Marry in Haste | Book 1 in the Convenient Marriage Series by Anne Gracie

Title: Marry in Haste
Author: Anne Gracie
Series: Marriage of Convenience #1
Rating Out of 5: 4.5 (Amazing, but not quite perfect)
My Bookshelves: Historical romance, Regency romance
Dates read: 20th February – 1st March 2021
Pace: Medium
Format: Novel
Publisher: Berkley
Year: 2017
5th sentence, 74th page: Miss Wind-whatever!

Synopsis

Major Calbourne Rutherford returns to England on the trail of an assassin, only to find he’s become Lord Ashendon, with the responsibility for vast estates and dependent relatives. Cal can command the toughest men, but his wild half sisters are quite another matter. They might just be his undoing.

When he discovers that Miss Emmaline Westwood, the girls’ former teacher, guides them with ese, Cal offers her a marriage of convenience. But strong-minded and independent Emm is neither as compliant nor as proper as he expected, and Cal finds himself most inconveniently seduced by his convenient wife.

Emm knows they didn’t marry for love, yet beneath her husband’s austere façade, she catches glimpses of a man who takes her breath away. As pride, duty and passion clash, will these two stubborn hearts find more than they ever dreamed of?

Thoughts

Regency romances are the kind of books that are slowly gaining traction on my bookshelves. It’s one of those shelves that a year ago, there wasn’t much on it… but then I started buying more and more. Now, it’s a fairly big collection. This is my first foray into the stories of Anne Gracie. And I must say, I am so glad that I bought some of her books – they are awesome and beautiful!

From the prologue, I was intrigued about Emm’s past – after all, it starts with a rumor and her father trying to force her into marriage. Yet, you don’t quite know what happened and why. Which is one of the many sub-plots that will keep you reading throughout this story. You just want to know what sent Emm’s life so drastically off track. And it takes about three quarters of the book to find out the answer to that…

Cal is a bit of a reserved lead. I love that he is trying to do what he thinks is right – but can’t quite figure out what that actually is. He’s so very, very lost. Which just makes it all that much sweeter when Emm comes into his life and just… fixes all of the bits that have been turned upside down. Sometimes people just need a little bit of guidance, and Cal gets that constantly through his “marriage of convenience”.

It’s hard to imagine the world that Emm lives in – but, I love that she is able to maintain her sense of self, even when she gets kicked down again and again. She also makes sure that she protects and cares for the women under her protection. From the girls at the school, to the sisters and niece of Cal. They are constantly bolstered by this amazing woman and find a way to be themselves in a society that doesn’t necessarily support them.

I may love the romance aspect of this story, but I also love the feeling of women banding together. Not just in the way that Emm protects the girls, but also how they protect her. When rumors and horrible things come to light, it is the girls that ultimately protect and bolster Emm, her students and the women she’s befriended. We have way too many stories about women tearing each other down, so it’s nice to have one that features women supporting one another.

Argos has always been loyal. But that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a happily ever after.

Thoughts

My heart broke a little as I read this story. Probably because it basically features a dog that has been abandoned.

Actually, this whole story is written from the point of view of the dog’s acceptance of his lot in life. I would hate for my puppies to feel that way.

This mostly was a quick, easy and pleasant read. But it did also make me want to read Homer – since Argos is featured in that.

Thoughts

I’m not entirely sure what even happened in this story if I’m being honest. Which definitely means that this wasn’t high on my list of stories that I want to reread.

Then again, the ending of this story was kind of brilliant. A good, fun twist at the end. First of all, I thought that the MC was going to be vampire-food. Then he, well… wasn’t.

Overall, a fun and easy story to read. And not a total loss. But one that I wouldn’t necessarily want to read again.

Jeremy has always told the most horrifying stories right before bed time… but this one will make you want to keep the light off.

Thoughts

This was… freaking terrifying. Like. Completely, totally and utterly terrifying. I’m really damn glad that I didn’t read this late at night.

I’m a big sister, and I know that I have done many, many things over the years to torture my little sister. But what was happening in this story… I think she should be glad that I didn’t try and torture and scare her as much as Jeremy did in this. But, the uh…. Comeuppance was waaaaaaay more worse.

This was brilliantly written and completely spine tingling. It is beautiful and wonderful. But yeah… don’t read this late at night. Honestly, it is horrifying.

Synopsis

“SOMEONE LEFT A KNIFE IN THE DOOR.”

Her voice was nonchalant, trying to mask her fear, trying to make it sounds as if someone had simply left flowers.

With the defeat of the evil necromancer Douglas behind him, Sam LaCroix is getting used to his new life. Okay, so he hadn’t exactly planned to be a powerful necromancer with a seat on the local magical council and a capricious werewolf sort-of-girlfriend, but things are going fine, right?

Well… not really. He’s pretty tired of getting beat up by everyone and their mother, for one thing, and he can’t help but feel that his new house hates him. His best friend is a were-bear, someone is threatening his sister, and while Sam realizes that he himself has a lot of power at his fingertips, he’s not exactly sure how to use it. Which turns out to be kind of a problem when someone close to him turns up dead.

Thoughts

As with all of the other McBride stories that I’ve read so far, this is funny, humorous and brilliantly written. It’s a fantastic ending to this duology. One that I seriously enjoyed and couldn’t put down. After all, Sam is not even remotely what you would expect as a necromancer. And, as you slowly begin to realise, he has a whole heap of other powers at his disposal… ones that I wanted to know more about.

Douglas was one scary SOB in Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. He gets worse in this. Total Voldemort vibes. Although, to be fair, he is much, much less freaky than Voldemort. And so much less devilish. Yet, there is a bit of a redemption arc – one that didn’t necessarily redeem the villain, but did make him a little less despicable. And horrifying.

As much as I loved this story, I didn’t really love the fact that this story ended with Brid and Sam being… unresolved. It was seriously frustrating. To the point that I kept turning the final page back and forth. I just thought I was missing something! Although, it does leave the end open to the interpretation that there was a happily ever after for the two of them… just one that took a little bit more work than there was time for within this story.

I love that Sam seems to jump from the frying pan into the story. Repeatedly. And consistently. Not necessarily a great thing for him and his friends, but a wonderful journey for me. You just kind of feel him blundering from moment to moment, trying to figure out what on earth he is doing. Kind of like how I feel most days of my life if I’m being truly honest here…

I can’t wait to read more McBride books. They’re all sitting on my wishlist, ready and rearing to go. I just have to find a little more funding… and I just hope that I get to have a few appearances from Sam and Brid again. They’re just too damn wonderful and cute. Even if they could both kill me with their hands tied behind their backs…

Pack Law by Lorie O’Clare

Synopsis

Pack law states every female shall have three mates. It’s a necessary action in order to keep the lunewulf breed alive. Sophie Rousseau has just learned who her three mates will be. And one of them is the sexy Nik Alexander who has invaded her dreams since high school. Though Sophie’s nervous about fulfilling pack law, she can’t wait to mate with Nik. Nik has lusted after Sophie, wanted her for his mate and mother of his children. He gets his way, but by pack law, Sophie cannot be his alone. Nik will share her with two other werewolves. But only on his terms.

Thoughts

I didn’t necessarily hate this story, but I certainly didn’t really love it either. After all, it was a little bit too… pushy and bride price for me. I mean, one woman, assigned 3 men that she has to mate with. Not exactly my cup of tea…

Although I wasn’t comfortable with the whole, you have to give three men children thing… and being assigned these men without input. I really didn’t mind this story. For starters, you had one character who did actively rebel against this horrible “tradition”. Then, there was the fact that the lead character in this, did get the man that she wanted, and managed to find herself in a situation in which she was happy. Don’t get me wrong, there is no way on earth I’d like this situation. But at least it was written in a way that only made me cringe just a little bit…

Overall, this wasn’t a horrifying story. But it really wasn’t one that I went head over heels for. I’ll probably buy more books in the series out of pure curiosity. But not one that I will be putting to the top of the list… I love a good erotic romance, but I’m not really sure how I feel about one that features one woman, three men…

Synopsis

Camael is an angel, just visiting earth. But then he runs into Rei, and finds himself irreverisbly fallen. What follows is an understanding of what love can create… and destroy.

Thoughts

I have some very mixed feelings about this short story. I did enjoy it, and I would probably happily read it again. But I didn’t feel completely swept away by it either. As I said… kind of mixed feelings here. Enjoyable, but not earth shattering. Although, I think that I would love to read a story that takes place after the girl dies, and the angel finally begins to feel his punishment…

The setting of this story was very… native American, first pioneers, not much power for women… it is a setting that feels incredibly familiar. But not necessarily one that I absolutely adored. It was just… pleasant. The fact that it was combined with angels and feelings of Christianity… maybe that’s why I didn’t quite fall head over heels for this story.

This is a brilliant, fun and gorgeous little, short story. It’s the kind of tale that I will definitely go back to, but I could also frequently put down when I felt like doing the responsible adult things. It was fun and engaging, and a great way to kill a little time while I was trying to make my self calm down.
