Synopsis

Once upon a time there were threee young ladies who, despite their fortunes, had been on the Marriage Mart a bit too long. They were known as the “Spinster Heiresses”…

Is it wrong for a woman to want more?

Not if she is a Spinster Heiress. They do not settle. Any young miss would be very lucky to find herself promised to a man like the Duke of Camberly. However, Miss Willa Reverly has watched her friends marry for love. Camberly may be the prize of the season, but she will not be “sold” to any man. She wants his devotion or she wants nothing at all.

When is a Marriage of Convenience inconvenient?

Newly named to the ducal title, Matthew Addison is determined to discover the secrets behind Mayfield, the bankrupt estate he has inherited. He doesn’t have time to coddle a headstrong heiress who is determined to ditch him over something as silly as “love”. Little does he know that his questions will place her in jeopardy. Now he will do what he must to save them both.

Could it be that in running from danger they might be racing headlong into a truly unexpected fate: falling in love?

Thoughts

This is a fantastic ending to a beautiful little trilogy. Not only does Willa, the third “Spinster Heiress” find her own happiness, but the final scene involves all three women with their own happily ever afters. I loved that it ended with the girls being together as friends, rather than that feeling I was beginning to get that made you think that once they were married, they travelled off into the sunset and didn’t see each other again. I’m so glad that their bonds are reaffirmed in this.

The beginnings of Willa and Matt’s relationship (and the hurdles they must face) are touched upon in A Match Made in Bed. In fact, on finishing the second book in the series, I was kind of desperate to pick up the final story, because there was a fantastic lead in to it. It meant that unlike the first two book sin the Spinster Heiresses series, it as possible to be thrown into the action immediately. Starting with Willa jilting Matt and making it quite obvious that she wasn’t the kind of woman who could just be walked all over.

There is a lot more hidden drama in this story than the first two books. Mainly because blackmail and bankruptcy lead to a pretty intense storyline. One which had me pulling the pages of the book closer and closer to my face as I was more and more absorbed by the storyline. Although, it was still the romance of the story and the couple who really swept me off my feet. After all, I’m a sucker for a good romance.

What I loved most about this story is that the moment both characters realised that they were in love wasn’t an insane lightbulb moment. There is sexual passion there from the very beginning and a bit of a lustful infatuation on both their parts. But it is that realisation that love doesn’t have to be full of drama and angst. It is about finding that perfect partner in another human being and being able to just work together… that was the part of this story which completely enthralled me.

Synopsis

Once upon a time there were threee young ladies who, despite their fortunes, had been on the Marriage Mart a bit too long. They were known as the “Spinster Heiresses”…

Is it wrong for a woman to want more?

Miss Cassandra Holwell is too tall, too bookish, and too smart – but she does have money and a father who wants a grand title for her. Cassandra hasn’t felt a desire to marry until she meets the sinfully handsome Duke of Camberly, who captures her imagination… until Soren York, Earl of Dewsberry and her family’s sworn enemy, steps in the way.

The Holwells ruined Soren’s family, and he’s lived on the knige’s edge trying to resurrect their fortunes… until he considers marrying the Holwell Heiress. Not only would her dowry give him the funds he needs, but he has secretly had an eye on the independent-minded bluestocking since they both first realized the differences between men and women.

She likes to read; he has no patience for books. She know little of sex; he is a man of the world and willing to school her. Her family destroyed his; his offer of marriage may be her only salvation

Now Cassandra and Soren must learn to love each other for who they are, not what they are – and the lessons are becoming an exercise in absolute pleasure.

Thoughts

I absolutely adored this book. There was just something about it that was easy, fun and totally impossible to put down. Which I’m starting to find as a bit of a trend in the regency romances I’m obsessing over at the moment. Again, I read this in a ridiculously short amount of time, found it impossible to put down and really wanted to pick up The Duke That I Marry immediately on finishing this. I didn’t, because I have papers to write and an adult life to live… but I might have to do so pretty soon.

After the intensity of Leonie and Roman’s relationship in If Ever I Should Love You, I was completely expecting Cass and Soren to have a major falling out once they’d agreed to marriage. And I completely dreaded it. They had a little more of a battle to actually get to their happy, nuptial state, and I really, really didn’t want to see that suddenly destroyed and having to be fixed in the first moments of their “happily ever after”. It didn’t happen. Which made me ridiculously happy.

I could kind of tell that the father of Cass was kind of horrible. And a dick. But even I was surprised at the depths of the horribleness of her family. After reading two books in this trilogy in which the parents of the bride are completely deplorable… I’m really, really hoping that the third, and final book has parents that are at least abideable. Not holding my breath… but horrible parents somehow tears my heart strings more than anything else. There is just something so drastically sad about such a thing.

As much as I loved this book. There were two themes that I really and truly adored.

The first was the discussion about compromise and finding a way to make everything work. Both Soren and Cass are stubborn and opinionated. But they find a way to work each others’ needs and desires into their actions. Passion and romance is always featured, but compromise in a relationship? That’s something that I think we all need to focus on a little bit more…

And secondly, and finally, this story is really about getting over the past and moving on. About finding a way to move forward and act like an actual human being, rather than holding onto the horrors of the past. There’s even a great example in there which shows you just how much you can be twisted by holding onto the past with such vicious bitterness.

Synopsis

Once upon a time there were threee young ladies who, despite their fortunes, had been on the Marriage Mart a bit too long. They were known as the “Spinster Heiresses”…

He’s inherited a title, but not a penny to speak of, so the Earl of Rochdale knows he must find a wife – preferably one tolerably pretty and good-tempered, but definitely wealthy, and who will exchange her fortune for his family name.

His choice: Leonie Charnock, one of the season’s “Spinster Heiresses”. Years before, the earl had saved the dark-eyed beauty’s reputation, and she is still breahttakingly lovely, leading Rochdale to hope that their marriage will be more than in name only.

However, Leonie doesn’t want to be anyone’s wife. Nearly destroyed by the secrets in her past, Leonie agrees to their union with one condition: there will be a wedding but no bedding. But it’s a condition the new Countess Rochdale isn’t sure even she can keep…

Thoughts

Late last year, I read a novella by Cathy Maxwell and I loved it. So, the other day when I decided I wanted to buy a random guilty pleasure and saw one of her books on the shelves… I succumbed. And then, I read it very, very quickly in a period of about 24 hours. To the point that I didn’t even spend the last hour with my partner before he went away for a week because I really wanted to finish this amazing novel!

I love the Leonie is incredibly flawed. Unlike most heroines, particularly within Regency romances, she has a pretty big and serious flaw. There is no sweetness of voice of reason to her actions. Instead, she’s a lot more relatable. Actually, since her flaw (alcoholism) is one that my family has… it was a little too easy to relate to this aspect of her character. The fact that Roman then is incapable of dealing with her flaws like a semi-normal person. I love that both of these characters make you want to reach through the pages and smack them around. Normally I kind of feel like that about the men, but the fact that I wanted to do it to the woman as well… it somehow made her that much more real!

I’ve definitely decided in the last month that Regency romances are my new obsession. There is just something about them that captures the imagination and takes you away. An extra level of innocence which make the story so much sweeter and impossible to put down. There is just something that makes it more intense and fun. They’re a little reminiscent of Jane Austen, but the modern day writers add in a lot more sex, and this is something that I thoroughly enjoy in my romances… that turning of innocence.

One of the parts of Leonie that I love is that instead of focusing on becoming a better woman for Roman, she finds a way to just become a better person. A way to love herself again. The use of roses and gardening is a great way to do this. And it acted as a little bit of a reminder that it’s important to love yourself before finding a way to be what your partner needs. Feeling worthy of love is one of the most important things. Which is an amazing message – although this is a romance, Leonie doesn’t rely on a man to make her complete, she finds a way to do it herself.

Synopsis

He’s loved her from afar for decades. Now, they’re the last three actors left in a world of automaton shows. How will they find their happily ever after at the end of an era?

Thoughts

There was something so tragic and bittersweet about this story. Yet, by the end of it… kind of hopeful too. I don’t normally consider short stories and, in particular, Dieselpunk stories to be romantic. But there is something about this one that felt incredibly… well… romantic. There is no kissing, no sexuality and just the hint of something throughout. But it was quite possibly one of the sweetest books I’ve read in a long time.

There is a constant fear in society of our roles being replaced by robots. And what happens to those that are replaced? In this short story, it’s actors that are replaced. Something which I, personally can’t imagine, but does work brilliantly well into the themes of Dieselpunk. It set against a marriage breaking up, and the promising hints of a new love (which is actually super old) beginning. This whole end of an era feel helps to lead to that bittersweet, intense feeling.

This story is somehow sad and hopeful. It left me feeling melancholy, yet quite happy as I turned the final page. Feelings that I don’t always feel at the conclusion to a story and definitely don’t feel for the exact same tale.

Synopsis

Wolf is a man of the night. Then he runs into Rose, a gorgeous young woman who just wants to buy her “grandmother” a present…

Thoughts

I’ve just finished reading Lee’s Red as Blood collection. So I was kind of expecting something much, much darker than this story. It was incredibly lustful and intense in some ways, but it definitely wasn’t something I would call dark. There was also a point at the end which hints that they could, in fact, live happily ever after.

Actually this story didn’t just have a hint about happy endings, it had multiple. And pushed the boundaries of what I enjoy in a romance. This is the second story I’ve read which features a threesome, but, unlike the first one, I found this non-confronting. Actually, I found it kind of cute, funny and sweet in moments. Which was a very interesting reaction.

This was a fantastic short story. One that I will probably revisit in the future. There is just something fun about it, even when it’s dealing with a lot of sexuality. Maybe it’s because I’m reading a collection that deals with sexuality, but not in the truly intense way of Alien Sex.

Synopsis

Kidnapped as a young girl, her psychic powers harnessed by a madman, Memory lives in a caged and isolated existence… until she comes face-to-face with a wolf. Labelled an empath by her bad-tempered rescuer, Memory knows that her ‘gift’ is nothing so bright. It is a terrible darkness that means she will always be hunted.

But Memory is free now and she intends to live. A certain growly wolf can just deal with it.

Alexei prefers to keep his packmates at bay, the bleak history of his family a constant reminder that mating, love and hope are not for him. But Memory, this defiant and fearless woman who stands toe-to-toe with him, awakens the most primal part of his nature – and soon, he must make a choice: risk everything or lose Memory to a murderous darkness that wants to annihilate her from existence…

Thoughts

Normally as soon as I receive the next book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity, I read it the moment it arrives on my doorstep. Cover to cover. Not even pausing to eat (I eat, but I’ve gotten very good at doing so whilst reading). This time I waited a little bit longer. I was trying to show that I had self-control or some such nonsense… what a mistake. I did manage to stretch my reading over two days instead of less than 10 hours, so that was helpful for the whole adult thing… but otherwise I feel that I exercised some great self-control when reading such a phenomenal book.

One thing that always surprises me about this series is that at no point has it gotten same-same. Normally when I’m looking at such a large series, especially one that is a romance, you tend to start falling into tropes. Which just means that I have to take a few more breaks between each story. Not so with this. I’m not even sure at this point how many Psy-Changeling books, novellas and short stories I have just absorbed. But I do know that it’s a lot. And that I’m seriously grateful for them. 2019 was super crappy, and this was the first book of 2020. What a beautiful way to start the year.

One of the aspects of the storyline in this series which stops it from getting stale is the overarching battles and mystery being faced. There are just enough hints of another being and another battle being fought that you’re not only reading to find out if the couple get the happily ever after you want, but also because there’s some crazy out there trying to destroy the Alliance. In this case, it was a man who had no idea what he was doing. And, although there was kind of a conclusion to that little point of anarchy, I’m not sure that it was completely solved. And it hinted at SO MUCH MORE. Probably why, even after umpteen +++ books, I’m still hanging out excitedly for the next story.

One of my favourite aspects to this story though was the use of a flip side to empaths. No matter what lore or belief system you look at, empaths are generally something gentle and good. They can twist this a little, but I can only think of one other character in all the books I’ve read that was able to put a darker twist on the ability. Memory’s version of empathy is so completely different. Yet, it makes a great kind of sense. After all, you can’t have the light without the dark…. Which doesn’t mean that dark is evil. As this story will surely convince you.

Synopsis

Kat Danilo’s childhood turned tragic when her sister become the victim of a serial killer. Years later, she gets a chance at justice when she discovers she’s the daughter of Lancelot, vampire knight of the Round Table. But first, she’s got to convince a handsome vampire warrior that she’s worthy to gain the magical powers that are her birthright—powers that might help her find her sister’s killer.

If the murderer doesn’t find her first….

Thoughts

My first ever Mageverse story! I’ve been looking at this series for a while, because, quite frankly, I’m just intrigued by the idea of a series based on vampires that are also knights of the round table. And this completely lived up to all of my expectations! I’ve read a novella or two of Knight’s which are just lustful enough for me to be happy. And this kept up that trend. But you know… it added in this idea of vampires, werewolves, witches and Camelot. What girl (or person, however you want to approach this) wouldn’t fall madly in love?

As with many novellas, this was a great, quick, easy and quite lustful read. Which, of course, is exactly what the doctor ordered. Or at least, that’s the case in my crazy, happy mind. The attraction between the two leads is there from the very beginning, although, it does take them a little while to build up to it. In my opinion, I much prefer this – don’t get the whole insta love thing. But I digress. I love that although they’re both attracted from the beginning, and the story does centre on this… it’s not what made me want to keep reading. Don’t get me wrong, the romance was freaking fantastic. But the mystery of what was wrong with Christmas and what happened in the past… I was so much more intrigued by that.

Both Kat and Ridge have a tragic history in this story. Yet, it’s Kat’s that really drew me in. Her not well mother, her lost sister and the mystery that surrounds everything was seriously difficult to put down. The fact that you find out in the opening moments that she’s also Lancelot’s daughter… I just had to know more!

Synopsis

Mindy Kaling has found herself at a turning point and Why Not Me? is her ongoing journey to find fulfilment and adventure in her adult life, be it falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in unlikely places, or attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behaviour modification whatsoever.

Revealling her tongue-in-cheek solutions for guaranteed on-camera beauty, telling the story of being seduced then dumped by a female friend in LA, and spilling some secrets on her relationship with ex-boyfriend and close friend B.J. Novak, Mindy turns the anxieties and glamour of her second coming-of-age into this book, to which anyone can relate. (And, if they can’t, they can skip to the parts where she talks about Bradley Cooper.)

Thoughts

This memoir is pretty much the funniest book I’ve read this year. There is just something about the way that Mindy writes that had me laughing out loud. Multiple times my partner came into our bedroom to find out what was going on. And to tell me off for not actually going to sleep. But seriously… this was just so damn funny!

This was the very final book that I finished of 2019 and it was great to finish on such a high note. There is something fun, engaging and entertaining about the way that Mindy tells her story. And she’s got such a bubbly attitude to life. I did read one other memoir by a comedian this year (The Last Black Unicorn) which was also hilarious. But I think it is Mindy’s light-heartedness that really took this one over the line.

To top off the humour of the writing, there are lots of pictures throughout this. My favourite might be of Smegal. But you need to read the book to see why I was crying with laughter at that. Literally crying. And then my puppies and partner looked at me in slight fear… they thought I was going insane. Which might not be far off the bat, but that’s a conversation for a different day.

Mostly this is a great story abut Mindy’s life and career. How what you see is what you get, except when there’s a huge makeup team involved and just generally about loving life. Or at least, that’s what I get out of this. And I love that. So what a way to end the year, and bring on the new one!

Synopsis

Fall in love with someone out of this world

If love transcends all boundaries then paranormal romance is its logical conclusion. From the biggest names around, here are 24 tales to take you to another time and place.

Let Alyssa Day, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Cheyenne McCray, Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, Kelley Armstrong, Maria V. Snyder, Carrie Vaughn, Allyson James Marland and others show you powers beyond your wildest imaginings.

Within these pages mythical beasts, magical creatures of all shapes and sizes, heart-stoppingly handsome ghosts, angels, and mortals with extra-sensitive sensory perception play out the themes of extraordinary desires.

Thoughts

The thing that I love most about this collection is that it completely runs the gambit of supernatural and paranormal creatures. There are a number of standalone stories and tales that are part of series. But mostly, there’s just stories which feature vampires and werewolves; djinn and selkies. Some of the paranormal beings that feature in this are not ones that I normally come across. Which of course just made it all that much more exciting. You didn’t know what sort of paranormal creature would be next!

These stories were all sweet and incredibly easy to read. They’re tales which make you happy and kind of hopeful about true love. Something which I think everyone needs at some point in their lives. Having said that, there were a few unwieldy stories in this collection. They weren’t annoyingly so, but a few did need to be reread so that I could grasp what was really happening.

I recognised most of the authors in this collection. Which was good, because then I could turn to my shelves in some cases and grab down the books that will get me a further fix of their writing. There were a few that I need to add to my wish list. But mostly I got to enjoy the collection, without feeling the insane need to buy more, more, more books… which is probably a good thing for my bank account.

Propelled through time into situations rich with possibility and fraught with danger, these sexy, sassy heroines each seek their dreamed of happy ending.

Will souls separated by time be reunited – or separated, forever?

Thoughts

This is an absolutely brilliant collection. I haven’t read any time travel romances before. So it was kind of nice to read a whole collection of them. I do have a few full length novels in this genre sitting on my shelves ready to go though. Now that I’ve read this collection, I kind of can’t wait!

Even though all of these stories featured time travel and romance in some way, shape or form, the themes and messages throughout were vastly different. The stories weren’t overly lustful like many of the romances that I’ve read. Actually, there tended to be more of a focus on the romances and the finding true love message. Or just on the ways in which time travel actually works.

The stories were generally a mix of present and past; or present and future. Only one or two stories feature the past and the future, but most had a great blending of realities. Sometimes characters ended up back in their own time, sometimes in a different time that fulfilled their greatest desires. There really was something for everyone in this.

Whilst I absolutely adored this collection, it isn’t one that I will probably read again and again. As much as I loved everything, there was nothing that stood out as a story that I wanted to reread.
