Synopsis

Matt’s childhood friend, Ashley, has been stopping by a lot lately. That might seem pretty normal, but Ashley died years ago and now she’s Death.

And tonight she wants waffles and fries.

Thoughts

This story was cute, funny and really fun. Even though there was a death. But the peppy Harbringer of Death made it fun and adorable. Her friendship with Matt was also sweet, albeit in a slightly creepy kind of way. But it worked.

Mostly this story makes me feel a little hungry – it mostly takes place in a dinner and there are waffles. Which I haven’t had in a while… which I really feel like… anyone else got a waffle craving at the moment? Maybe with a side of death?

Even demons need to run a business… or at least, it’s a great way to pull of a new kind of steeple…

Thoughts

I’m a little hinky about Christianity. Just bad experiences with some not nice people who hid behind their religion. But, it always makes me entertained to read any story that features a Christian spin or tale. The fact that this one focused on a demon’s point of view and his attempts at corrupting the church goers kind of made it all the more entertaining.

I loved the amount of thought and work that went into creating this world, and the way it overlapped so neatly with our own reality. Placing demons within churches as a vessel of temptation, and then the flaming swords of retribution… it all worked really cutely and I was actually a little disappointed when they all dissolved back into their hell dimensions…

Synopsis

A Weather Warden short story.

Thoughts

This short is the tale of David’s feelings and interactions with Joanne. It actually explains a lot of why he does what he does and makes the choices he makes throughout Ill Wind.

This is one of those quick, deleted scenes that you can find in a lot of series. It doesn’t really have its own storyline, but rather, adds to the overarching storyline of the main series. The thing that I love about these, and No Love Lost in particular, is that it gives you a glimpse into another character’s point of view. Here, it is David’s process of falling in love and his view of Joanne. Reading this actually helped me to form a much better, overall picture of Joanne as well.

Synopsis

RIDERS ON THE STORM

The Wardens Association has been around pretty much forever. Some Wardens control fire, others control earth, water, or wind – and the most powerful can control more than one element. Without Wardens, Mother Nature would wipe humanity off the face of the earth…

Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. Usually, all it takes is a wave of her hand to tame the most violent weather. But n ow Joanne is trying to outrun another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. So she’s resorting to the very human tactic of running for her life…

Her only hope is Lewis, the most powerful Warden. Unfortunately, he’s also on the run from the World Council. It seems he’s stolen not one but three bottles of Djinn – making him the most wanted man on earth. And without Lewis, Joanne’s chances of surviving are as good as a snowball in – well, a place she may be headed. So she and her classic Mustang are racing hard to find him because there’s some bad weather closing in fast…

Thoughts

I’ve started this book twice. And both times I put it down because it was too good. Apparently, in my mind, that’s a thing – the first chapter was so good that I knew I would need to buy the rest of the series, or at least the next few books. And when I first went to read this, I didn’t have much money, so decided to make a more grown up decision. But as soon as I had a little surplus cash? I dived right into Ill Wind expecting the ride of a lifetime. And I wasn’t disappointed.

My biggest difficulty with this story was the length of the chapters. There are about 5 in this 300ish page story. It meant that I had trouble putting the book down and doing adult things like going to sleep, getting food, doing the work that I sometimes get paid to do… but, all in all, that really isn’t much of a complaint. I just had to be a little more aware and smarter about when I opened up this tale to start the next chapter. And really, I ended up reading it in almost one night (I read the first chapter a few days before). So ultimately, nothing much to complain about.

Joanne was an interesting female lead. Most of the stories I read have a heroine with a damaged past (check), a love interest that they can’t quite seem to trust, and an inability to have lasting relationships. Joanne only had the damaged past. Her sexuality and confidence in herself was entirely new to me. And I quite frankly, loved it. She was bold, confident and sex was something that she enjoyed, but it wasn’t a symptom of damage or mistrust. Actually, although it was a large part of her psyche, it wasn’t something that was dramatized in any way. It was just there.

The other incredibly unique thing about this story was the way that it was told. You are just dropped into the middle of her chaotic world and as the tale unfolds, you are slowly fed bits and pieces of her past. Actually, the tales of her past take up the vast majority of her tale, yet they are informing the future and the reasons for all of her decisions in the present. I’ve read other stories that do this, but not to this extreme. And I found that I really loved this incredibly different style.

Synopsis

What happens when dancing with the stars meets the supernatural community? Will heads roll?

Thoughts

I’m not a huge fan of reality TV. It always feels contrived and fake. Which, after reading this, I think that Chris Abbey might actually agree with me. This is a supernatural take on Dancing with the Stars. But one with a very sarcastic and ultimately funny twist. After all, most of the contestants are already dead, and those who are left… well, you’ll just have to read it to see.

Although this was a fun take on reality TV, it didn’t draw me in like a lot of other short stories. Although, the end did make me laugh. And I would probably read this again just to have the end of the tale go up in smoke again…

Proposing Research

This week I started drafting out my research proposal. It is due in September and it is going to go through a lot of reincarnations. But what really freaked me out is that I am literally planning out the next three years of my life. I had to do a chart saying what aspect of the experiment I will be doing at which point over the next three years. I knew that I was committing to this when I started, but actually putting it down on paper… THAT was far more overwhelming!

So here I am, wondering if my plan is even good enough for my supervisors (I find out on Wednesday). And freaking out because three years is a LONG time. And wondering why this is only suddenly occurring to me. And basically, I’m really not sure how I feel. Still incredibly excited. But now a little bit more scared…

Synopsis

An extra scene from the Unremembered series, showing how the stolen memories were obtained.

Thoughts

This is kind of a deleted scene from a series that I haven’t had a chance to read yet. Or really, hadn’t heard of before I read this. Having said that, I did really enjoy it – so it means that it has become quite likely that I will buy Unremembered and actually begin this series.

Unstolen showed a young boy trying to help his love, and fighting for it. But in a very unique way. After all, this story has a very SciFi feel to it, and nothing can be straight forward in a SciFi. I liked the idea of memories stored on a computer and the young boy being completely immersed in another’s feelings and emotions. Also the way in which he constantly felt like he was intruding, even though he was doing this to help somebody that he deeply cared about. I can’t wait to see how this overlaps with the first novel in this series!

Synopsis

A man is breaking and entering a house to take his pleasure in the bodies of those who live there. There’s just one problem… his memory.

Thoughts

I’ve seen dementia and short term memory loss used as a humorous anecdote, as a sad trial, as a hurdle that someone has to challenge or overcome. I have never read about it being used in a horror story. I’ve also never been so freaked out by the idea of someone with short term memory loss. But, Pyle has definitely managed to change that for me.

Creepy men jumping fences late at night is never a good beginning to a story. Said men then breaking and entering with evil thoughts on their mind… you can kind of see where the tale is going. Until things change and you can’t… this short story took a twist that I was completely not expecting. And I think that that combined with the short term memory aspect of this story… I didn’t sleep for a day after reading this!

Synopsis

The Riders… three legendary brothers who kept the Baba Yagas safe. The Riders’ immortality was stripped away, along with their mission. But they are still much more than Human, and their story is far from over…

His brothers may have found new paths to follow, but Alexei Knight isn’t even looking. If he can’t have the life he was meant to lead, there is no second choice. So he is bent on drinking and brawling his way across the country until he winds up on Cape Cod in a bar called The Hook and Anchor, where he finds challenges he was never expecting, a feisty red-haired bartender, and maybe a lot more than that…

Bethany McKenna left behind an almost-completed law degree to return home and care for her cranky disabled father and run his bar for him. If that wasn’t enough, she also agreed to foster a very pregnant Great Dane. She has enough to deal with without adding in a giant bearded brawler, no matter how appealing he is. Yet somehow he ends up living in the guest-house, taking care of her father, and sneaking his way into her heart…

Alexei and Bethany both think the lives they wanted have come to an end, but after dealing with a mysterious sea monster, pirates, dragons, and some adorable puppies, they might just discover that love is the greatest adventure of all…

Thoughts

I’m really glad that Blake decided to self-publish this book. As soon as I received it I was kind of frustrated, the book was so much bigger than the rest of the books in the Broken Riders series. And then I read the forward – the publishers decided not to go ahead with Alexei’s story, so Blake did instead. And, I for one, am very, very, very glad. I would have been constantly wondering what happened to the third brother and how he found his happy ending.

There is a bit of a difference in reading a self-published book and one that is produced by a publishing house. And it’s fairly obvious when reading Dangerously Fierce. But other than a few slight issues in the grammar or spelling, this story is just as amazing as the rest of Blake’s stories. The romance is sweet and endearing, the characters vivid and all strong in their own way, and the sense of pain in Alexei is heart-rendingly real.

My favourite thing about this story was the fact that it was set in a bar on the coast. The nautical feeling (including the presence of pirates) fed perfectly upon the idea of a small bar run by a busty red head. I’m not sure why red heads always seem to be feisty and busty, but it works perfectly in this tale. Especially when she gets out her baseball bat and threatens a bar full of large lads. From the very beginning, this had such a great vibe and a great feel to the setting. It might actually be my favourite Baba Yaga world location – there is just something about a bar on the sea.

Synopsis

Monster Crush is the tale of a young woman falling in love for the first time – with a Sasquatch. Told in the form of Twitter posts between two authors, it is incredibly unique and fun to read.

Thoughts

This was one of the most unique short stories I have ever read. Actually, it’s one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read period. Originally, this story was a twitter feed. And it is written as such – both Banks and Laybourne write their 140 character part and the tale is slowly spun.

I liked this story – it features the sasquatch after all. And somebody falling in love with him. And it’s just generally cute and simple. I like a good love story. And the unique way in which it’s told. And the great storyline all worked beautifully together to create a fantastic canvas upon which this journey can be taken.
