Scavenger Challenge – June

Duration: 1st June – 30th June
Number of books: 10
Hosted by: Crazy Challenge Connection

Cole Albert Porter was born on June 9, 1891. An American composer and songwriter born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his domineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920’s, and by the 1930’s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics, as well as the music, for his songs.

Here are 10 of Cole Porter’s most popular and well-known songs. Choose 7 and complete a task for each those songs.

You need to choose your songs when signing up for this challenge.

1. Begin the Beguine was composed between Kalabahi Indonesia and Fiji during a 1935 Pacific cruise aboard the ocean liner Franconia. In October 1935, it was introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical Jubilee at the Imperial Theatre in New York City.
Sheryl Crow
♬ Read a book set in a country other than your own (tell us where it’s set and where you live) – or – a book originally published in October (any year, but tell us which year). The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

2. I Get a Kick out of You was first sung in the 1934 Broadway musical Anything Goes. The lyrics were first altered shortly after being written. The last verse originally included the words “I shouldn’t care for those nights in the air
that the fair Mrs. Lindbergh goes through” but after the Lindbergh kidnapping, these were changed. Then, in the 1936 movie version, alternative lyrics in the second verse were provided to replace a reference to the drug cocaine, which was not allowed by Hollywood’s Production Code of 1934.
Frank Sinatra
♬ Read a book with a word in the title that starts with K – or – read a book that includes some sort of scandal (without revealing any spoilers, tell us briefly what the scandal involved). Cross Bones by Kathy Reichs

3. I Love Paris was first published in 1953 and was introduced by Lilo in the musical Can-Can. A line in the song’s lyrics inspired the title of the 1964 movie Paris When It Sizzles.
Ella Fitzgerald
♬ Read a book set in Paris – or – read a book with the letter Z somewhere in the title or author’s name. Red Hot Fury by Kasey MacKenzie

4. In the Still of the Night was written for the MGM film Rosalie, sung by Nelson Eddy and published in 1937.
Nelson Eddy
♬ Read a book with a word in the title containing the letters “GHT” intact – or – read a book with an obvious night scene on the cover (show us the cover). Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

5. It’s De-Lovely originally appeared in the 1936 musical, Red Hot and Blue and was introduced by Ethel Merman and Bob Hope. The song had fun with words that have the prefix “de,” leading to the creation of “de-lovely”: “It’s de-lightful, it’s de-licious, it’s de-lovely.”
Ethel Mermen
♬ Read a book with some sort of punctuation in the title – or – read a book with an author whose LAST name begins with “DE.” – Beastly: Lindy’s Diary by Alex Flinn

6. Love for Sale is from the 1930 musical The New Yorkers. The song is written from the viewpoint of a prostitute advertising love for sale. It was originally considered in bad taste, even scandalous. Despite the fact the song was banned from radio airplay, or perhaps because of it, it became a hit.
Vivian Green
♬ Read a book set in New York City – or – a book that got bad reviews but that you liked. Beastly by Alex Flinn

7. My Heart Belongs to Daddy is from the 1938 musical Leave It to Me! Dolly is stranded at a Siberian railway station wearing only a fur coat, and she performs a striptease while singing the song. Surrounded by eager Siberian men, she says that since she has met “daddy”, she will flirt with other men, but won’t “follow through”. “Daddy” is her sugar daddy, a newspaper magnate.
Ginny Simms
♬ Read a book set in a generally cold climate–bonus if it’s in Siberia or Russia– – or – a book with a character who flirts with another character. White Tiger by Kylie Chan

8. Night and Day is probably Porter’s most popular contribution to the Great American Songbook and has been recorded by dozens of artists, although it was originally written for the 1932 musical Gay Divorce. This song has very unusual chord changes in the underlying harmony. One account says that Porter was inspired by an Islamic prayer when he visited Morocco. Another says he was inspired by the Moorish architecture of the Alcazar Hotel in Ohio.
Kevin Kline and John Barrowman
♬ Read a book with the word “AND” in the title – or – a book that is popular, meaning it has at least 50,000 ratings (tell us how many). Wicked by Gregory Maguire

9. True Love was published in 1956 and introduced by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the film High Society. “True Love” is the name of a yacht on which two of the characters honeymoon in the play The Philadelphia Story, on which the musical is based.
Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly
♬ Read a book set at least partially on a yacht or cruise ship – or – a book with a wealthy character. Veiled Menace by Deborah Blake

10. You’re the Top is from the 1934 musical Anything Goes and is about a man and a woman who take turns complimenting each other. The lyrics are particularly notable because they offer a snapshot as to what was highly prized in the mid-1930s and demonstrate Porter’s rhyming ability.
Donald O’Connor, Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire
♬ Read a book set in the 1930’s – or – a book with rhyming words in the title The Britlingens Go to Hell by Charlaine Harris

I seem to have had a month of headaches and migraines this month. I still managed to read, but it certainly wasn’t as enjoyable as it has been in the past…

Synopsis

Dracula and Van Helsing are just con artists. And now they’ve gone into real estate.

Thoughts

The tales of Van Helsing and Dracula are told and retold so often that just the mention of their name can be exciting or send me off into snores. Luckily for me, this short story was a completely new take on traditional stories. And one that just wasn’t even slightly what I expected. Which was cute, funny and left me with a big smile on my face.

How did the stories about Dracula gain traction? Through the acts of the two conmen constantly gaining money from their unwitting victims. But, what are you supposed to do in today’s day and age? After all, I’m sure that constantly getting staked would get a little boring…I’m actually kind of disappointed that this story ended before I could find out how the great final con went for the two…

Synopsis

Superstition says that children born facing north will travel far from home, and Rose’s mother is terrified that Rose, a north child, will face a lonely, icy death if she follows her destiny. But Rose is unaware of this, so when an enormous white bear appears and wants to take her away she agrees to his bargain.

Rose travels on the bear’s back to a mysterious castle where a silent stranger appears to her night after night. Overwhelmed by curiosity, Rose does something that has terrible consequences. Now she must embark on an epic journey to save the one she loves and fulfil her true destiny.

As familiar and moving as Beauty and the Beast, yet infused with freshness and originality, North Child is at once lyrical, exciting and memorable, a sweeping story of grand proportions.

Thoughts

I loved this book the first time I read it. And then, I was so mixed in my emotions this second time. But, once I get sucked into Pattou’s amazing world, I was hooked. Again. And completely drowned myself in the words that she continuously spread across the page.

Although when I first read this story, I thought it was based on Beauty and the Beast, but I have since discovered that this story is based on a Norwegian folk tale. And somehow this just makes it so much better. The intricacies of the tale and storyline and the stark difference to a fairy tale that I know well make a lot more sense when understood through a Norwegian lens. Or at least, it is a lot more enthralling and leads me to a greater fascination for a culture I’ve had little exposure to.

I often get kind of frustrated with stories that flick between points of view. Normally I get really attached to just one of the characters and then all I want is to know more about his / her point of view. Somehow it works for this tale though. Flicking between Neddy, Rose, Father, White Bear and the Troll Queen shows the many finely woven aspects of this tale. And although you are sometimes swept away from a character that you love, you’re quickly swept into an entirely new tale that wraps you up in its spell.

Anyone that wants a sweet romance with a strong female, this is the story you should pick up. It brings to life a number of gorgeous, glacial settings that Rose must battle through to save what she loves most. But the overtones of folklore make this even sweeter and somehow more innocent.

Synopsis

THIS IS NOT THE FAIRY TALE YOU REMEMBER. BUT IT’S ONE YOU WON’T FORGET.

Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. The police have closed her case. The only person Scarlet can turn to is Wolf, a street fighter she does not trust, but they are drawn to each other.

Meanwhile, in New Beijing, Cinder will become the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive – when she breaks out of prison to stay one step ahead of vicious Queen Levanna.

As Scarlet and Wolf expose one mystery, they encounter Cinder and a new one unravels. Together they must challenge the evil queen, who will stop at nothing to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner…

Thoughts

It took me a little while to really get into this book. I absolutely devoured Cinder and all of the books that came before…. But there was something about Scarlet that took me a little longer. And then it hit me, out of all of the fairy tales that I grew up with – Red Riding Hood was the one that held the least interest and sway for me. Something about it never really clicked, and in the beginning of this book, that feeling kind of lingered.

Which is not to say that this story wasn’t amazing. Although it took me a little longer to become obsessively engrossed within the storyline (always a good tell of a good book with me), I still managed to very happily lose myself in the story of Scarlet and Wolf. The fact that Cinder’s story was continuing and everything tied in so beautifully together… it just all worked beautifully. I love how Meyer manages to grab the very heart of our favourite fairy tales and make them work in her incredibly unique world. The fact that there’s a bit of a love story involved kind of helps a little. After all, when there is some kind of love (be it romantic or platonic), the stakes are just that much higher.

I have to say that my favourite character throughout this entire novel was Wolf. There was just something about his tragic past, his incredibly obvious internal conflict and just his general persona that really drew me to him. It could have something to do with the fact that I often seem to connect with the idea of wolf packs and hierarchy in every book / series that I read (make of that what you will). His rocky relationship with his brother only increased the heartfelt and almost vulnerable feeling that he inspired, and although I know that the bulk of his and Scarlet’s story is over, I look forward to seeing how the two will play out throughout the rest of the series.

Anxiety

This week I had my first really severe anxiety attack for about five years. I’ve had a few momentary freak outs in the mean time, but nothing this bad. I had to call in sick to work a few times. I struggled to get any study done. I just barely could exist. And it was horrible. Actually, I’d forgotten how horrible it was to be like that. I’d forgotten how isolating and terrifying.

Really.  I’m still kind of scared that it’s going to happen again. Even though I feel completely fine now. I have no idea what set it off. I have no idea why I suddenly couldn’t move. Couldn’t function. It just happened. And it just happened for three whole days before the sun broke through the clouds.

The anxiety itself isn’t what concerns me, it’s the idea that it could happen again. And I won’t know why. And no one understands, so it’s a little hard to feel completely at ease when it can just happen again at any point…

Synopsis

This short story gives a whole new definition to the term still life painting.

Thoughts

This is an incredibly short story. And when I started reading it, I was wondering what part of painting an apple would make it part of a blood thirsty collection. When I figured it out, I was honestly a little grossed out and freaked. Which is why I gave it a slightly higher rating than I probably would have normally… it surprised me and made me feel weird.

Actually, it made me feel so weird that I can’t really find many more words to say…
