Synopsis

Beards, brothers, and bears, oh my!
Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak

Ten years after Simone Parton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe remembers everything – every look, every word, every single unrequited second – and the least thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be…

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but is she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor…

Thoughts

As usual, I love the works of Reid. She is funny, engaging, generally awesome and just all round, a lot of fun. The fact that, yet again, Reid finds characters that are not mainstream and a little in the minority… well, it just draws you further and further into the storyline. In this case, we have a POC lead female, and a male with a seriously awesome memory… one that I’m not exactly jealous of, because I can understand how painful that would probably be for him.

Roscoe is such an absolute sweetheart. He has been throughout all of the Winston Brothers books but getting to read about him as a sweetheart from the very beginning… oh. My heart just melted. Of all of the absolutely delectable brothers, he is most definitely the sweetest. Which is lovely considering that he is also the one that is in love with his childhood best friend… and the way he goes about it? Oh, honestly, once I actually got into this book and had the time to pick it up, I just devoured the whole damn story.

Although this is a contemporary romance series, Darrell Winston is a scary, horrible villain. He is just… so damn evil. And probably because he is also believable… he is also one of those villains that seriously give me the heebie jeebies. So, having a story that much more heavily featured him in the present (for the first four books he’s in jail) was… awesome. And horrible. It just made this story all that much more difficult to put down. Plus, it also is a great story point and methodology to pull Simone into the tale and the world of the Winston’s again.

Simone and Roscoe are a great couple. One that you fall in love with from the very first moment. I mean, all of the Reid couples are ones that you are pulling for from the beginning. But something about these two… it’s just wonderful. I love the stories about those who grew together as friends and become lovers. There is something just… adorable and impossible to forget about such a story line. There is a horrible cliché about falling in love with your best friend. One that is so completely true – and Roscoe and Simone definitely work with this cliché perfectly.

Not only does this story hit all of my happy points for diversity and romance. But it also helps to kind of round out the story with Darrell, who hovers throughout all of the tales. And it sets things up for the next two books – Billy’s story. I’m not exactly jumping to read Beard With Me because I know that it’s probably going to break my heart. But then, the other part of me… just can’t wait.

Love Her or Lose Her by Tessa Bailey

Dates read: 13th – 24th March 2021
Pace: Medium
Format: Novel
Publisher: Avon
Year: 2020
5th sentence, 74th page: “In bed or out?” Rosie said, heat staining her cheeks.

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey returns with a unique, sexy romantic comedy about a young married couple whose rocky relationship needs a serious renovation.

Rosie and Dominic Vega are the prefect couple: high school sweethearts, best friends, madly in love. Well, they used to be, anyway. Now Rosie’s lucky to get a caveman grunt from the ex-soldier every time she walks in the door. Dom is faithful and a great provider, but the man she fell in love with ten years ago is nowhere to be found. When Rosie’s girlfriends encourage her to demand more out of life and pursue her dream of opening a restaurant, she decides to demand more out of love, too. Three words: marriage boot camp.

Never in a million years did Rosie believe her stoic, too-manly-to-emote husband would actually agree to relationship rehab with a weed-smoking hippie. Dom talking about feelings? Sitting on pillows? Communing with nature? Learning love languages? Nope. But to Rosie’s surprise, he’s all in, and it forces her to admit her own role in their cracked foundation. As the two complete one ridiculous – yet surprisingly helpful – assignment after another, their remodeled relationship gets stronger than ever. Except just as they’re getting back on track, Rosie discovers Dom has a secret… and it could demolish everything.

Thoughts

As with Fix Her Up, I was completely in love with and completely pulled into this story. It was fun, light and seriously cute. Plus, I love that the angle in this romance isn’t so much about finding the love of your life, it’s about keeping them. I’ve been with my husband since we were quite young (not as young as Rosie and Dom), and I know that our relationship is a constant work in progress. So, having a story that highlights what happens after the wedding… it certainly was a fantastic alternate angle to a romance.

I’ve always believed in true love, but I’ve also believed that it doesn’t matter how much you love one another, there is much more to a relationship and marriage than love alone. I love that Bailey kind of takes the same standpoint – that Rosie deserves more than just love and needs to fight for something else in her life. It opens up this beautiful world in which love isn’t necessarily enough, there is other work involved. Believe me, a good relationship isn’t just built around love. It is about so much, much more. And that Rosie is willing to fight for this… man, I just fell for this character from the very first page.

It’s always fun when you feel like you have a lot in common with the lead character – and I certainly felt this way about Rosie. I too have a stoic, communicationally stunted man in my life. And, although she always wants him by her side, she is fiercely independent. And intelligent. And just driven. Plus, I love the level of sass – particularly in the moment when she decides to find the most “woo woo” therapist she possibly can. Not just to save their marriage, but also to try and make Dom really try. I love a woman who will occasionally go out of her way to be difficult. The fact that the therapist managed to throw in some very cool and interesting curveballs… well, it had me smiling and giggling all the way through.

Love Her or Lose Her is a beautiful romance, filled with all of the fun and lust that I enjoyed in Fix Her Up.  But I honestly probably enjoyed it just that little bit more. Simply because it deals with the day-to-day difficulties of being in a relationship. It highlights that even when you’ve had the wedding, found your happily ever after… things still take work. Plus, the inclusion of the love languages… it just reminds us to never take each other for granted and finding our happily ever after is always about work… in the best way possible.

Pace: Medium
Format: ARC, eBook, Novel
Publisher: Langley Gray
Year: 2021
5th sentence, 74th page: What happened to taking it easy?

Synopsis

Margot Fairchild is a woman with a plan. She’s ready to take over the family beauty empire JOLIE, until her dad informs her that she needs to prove her ability to follow-through before taking the helm. She must commit to something – anything – for 21 days, the time it takes to form a habit, in order to earn her chance. She has every confidence she can rise to the occasion, until she finds out she must date someone her friends choose for her. The man in question is a complete departure from her usual “type”; the handsome and injured, Luke Devereaux.

Luke Devereaux is a professional hockey player trying to keep out of the headlines due to a potential scandal lurking. His tattoos and bad boy looks overshadow his heart of gold, but he’s a firm believer that things will work out as they should, even with his career in jeopardy.
He retreats to the mountains of Colorado on a management-forced vacation while waiting for news about his multimillion-dollar contract renewal. He only has to keep a low profile until the decision is made. Then he meets Margot Fairchild.

Will Margot manage to take Luke’s laid-back lead?
Or will her need to take control sabotage Luke’s contract, and her ability to follow-through?

Thoughts

This is such a gorgeous and fun story. It made me smile, life and just generally had me seriously enjoying this story. Margot is an absolute pistol of a lead character, and Luke is completely adorable in his laid back, understanding mannerisms. That, and the setting of the entire romance is just… dreamy, cute and seriously beautiful. The perfect place to fall in love.

I love that this story has a serious How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days feeling. After all, Margot makes a deal with her father to stay in a relationship for 21 days… you can just taste the fall out from that deal from the very beginning. Although, it doesn’t stop you from wanting to sink into it and find out just how that fallout is going to happen! Then, there’s the feeling that Luke also has a fair amount to gain from their blossoming relationship…

I’ve never been skiing, and it’s not something that I’m honestly all that interested in. It just seems so damn… cold! But it also seems ridiculously fun and romantic. The kind of adventure that can most definitely cement a relationship and create a bit of a happily ever after feeling. It certainly works for Margot and Luke anyhow! And it adds an extra, fun layer of spice to the whole story. One that just helps to sink you further and further into the setting, scenery and storyline.

I absolutely adored this story – the lead characters where absolutely adorable. And the secondary characters were just as much fun… there were a few calamities in their relationship along the way, which is exactly what I need in a story about relationships. But not enough to make your heart hurt. Like the other Socialites stories, this was light, fun and intensely enjoyable.

Synopsis

She’s a widow who finds herself falling for an angel. And the angel is falling for her. But, then the rules get in the way and things take a slightly more difficult turn….

Thoughts

I enjoyed this short story. It’s not the kind that I will wax on and off about it’s awesomeness. But it was most definitely enjoyable. And a wonderful diversion from reality, study and just general adulthood for a little while. Which is honestly what I’m mostly looking for in a short story…

The idea of an angel falling for a mortal and having his wings clipped is a kind of frequent trope in some of the books that I’m reading. But it still is one that I really like. I mean, giving up everything for love? That’s well worth it in my books… although, the punishment received and the reality that is thrust upon the angels in this is kind of seriously harsh…

I really enjoyed this short story, but it’s not the most memorable story that I’ve ever read either. It was fun, light and easy. It also felt nicely finished out with the ending… even if the punishment for rule breaking was yet to come.

Lucky Child by Loung Ung

BOOKS - Loung Ung

Title: Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind
Author: Loung Ung

Format: Novel

5th sentence, 74th page: While they chatter away about the farm and the weather, Cou slowly fold Khouy’s clothes and lays them on the plank.

Synopsis

The author of the critically acclaimed bestseller First They Killed My Father returns with a searing and redemptive story of life in America as a Cambodian genocide survivor.

After enduring years of hunger, deprivation, and devastating loss at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, ten-year-old Loung Ung became the “lucky child,” the sibling chosen to accompany her eldest brother to America while her one surviving sister and two brothers remained behind. In this poignant and elegiac memoir, Loung recalls her assimilation into an unfamiliar new culture while struggling to overcome dogged memories of violence and the deep scars of war. In alternating chapters, she gives voice to Chou, the beloved older sister whose life in war-torn Cambodia so easily could have been hers. Highlighting the harsh realities of chance and circumstance in times of war as well as in times of peace, Lucky Child is ultimately a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and to the salvaging strength of family bonds.

Thoughts

This is just as hard hitting as the first Ung book, First They Killed My Father. It is dark, twisted and definitely the type of book that you need to read only in certain moods. But it is also important, poignant, and brilliantly written. I loved every moment of reading this. Even if it wasn’t the type of book that I wanted to read each and every day.

The entire time I read this memoir, my heart honestly ached. It is an incredibly tragic tale. One that, even though Loung gets out of Cambodia young, continues on. She manages to write about her PTSD and the difficulties of adapting to a foreign country in a way that is a little heartwrenching, incredibly realistic, but still not so overwhelming that you can’t stomach the idea of reading the story. It’s a fine line to walk when retelling tales of war and PTSD, but Ung manages to do so in a relatable and approachable way. Now I can’t wait to read the final book in this trilogy!

My sister is my favourite person in the world. She is my best friend, confidant and the person that honestly understands me more than anyone else. It is obvious from the way that she writes that Ung feels very much the same. Which probably is what made this story so hard for me to read – Loung and Chou are separated for fifteen years in a time that would have been crucial to both of them in their social and physical growth. It is definitely a little heart wrenching. But I love that there is this constant reminder that sisters are forever. That no matter the time that passed, they were still sisters and still loved each other dearly.

This is a great way to tell the story of two sisters – you journey alongside both Loung and Chou to find out what their lives were like after the war and the genocide. It helps to show how different twists of fate can make two lies. And how intensely the past can affect our every day lives. It is one of those stories that will stick with me forever and I will probably reread this multiple times in the future.

Pace: Fast

5th sentence, 74th page: Which still didn’t explain why it didn’t register as dead.

Synopsis

Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say.

As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself – who happens to look fantastic in jeans – nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high-profile murder when she’s attacked by the “shade” she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around…

To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something – though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex. But Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer who wields a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life…and her soul.

Thoughts

I’ve read this book more times than I can count. I actually am at a point where I need to buy myself a new copy… it’s just starting to fall apart quite drastically. There is just a wonderful feeling about this tale. A sense of coming home just encompasses me whenever I open the spine of this book. Alex is an amazing heroine, the storyline is full of octane and makes your heart skip a beat. And the whole tale just generally sweeps you off your feet from the very first moment…

Normally I’m not a huge fan of love triangles – they feel kind of forced, and a little bit indulgent at times if I’m being honest. Yet, there is something about Price’s writing that makes me… not mind them. For Alex, the triangle with Falin and Death is just starting to form. And it doesn’t feel like a self-indulgent, faked out story where the girl is just desirable. Rather, it is the forming of two different relationships and the ways in which they expand. Falin and Death are two different characters, ones that will draw you in and leave you wondering who Alex will ultimately choose…

I have heaps and heaps of urban fantasy books on my shelves (it’s probably the biggest section if I’m being honest). And most of them deal with witches, magic, fae, or some kind of approach to this. However, I don’t have any books which have reapers, death and grave witches as a feature. Which makes this series and book even more special. There is only one other series that has a woman who is capable to seeing death and with that strong a connection to death – Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. I love the uniqueness and wonderful way that this story is approached. After all, Alex is a wonderful enigma, one that I want to find more and more out about.

This is one of those wonderfully fast paced urban fantasies. It is a great story on its own, but it also helps to set up the world of Alex Craft and all of the shenanigans that are about to follow. It is one of those stories, that no matter how many times I read it, I will find something else to enjoy. Something else that I didn’t know last time. And even though I mostly remember the storyline with each rereading… I still feel surprised and unable to put the book down with each rereading.

Synopsis

A billionaire romance – reimagined.

Winnie grew up in fortune and infamy and now wants nothing to do with her family’s dirty money. She’s determined to break away from the Whitman name and is well on her way to funding her new nonprofit, without any help from her family connections.

Winnie has been too focused on her work to make time for love until one rainy night she runs into a stranger while trying to catch a cab. Winnie and the stranger are so taken with one another, they forget to exchange contact information.

When her friends find out that “too busy for love” Winnie is showing interest in someone, they hatch a plan to remedy the missed connection. But will Winnie have any idea what to do when love comes her way? And will the stranger on the street distract her from her goals, or will he turn out to be more than just a pair of pretty eyes?

A story of finding love with best friends by your side to help you through it.

This is the first in a series following four single best friends who are all billionaires in their own right. This standalone book follows one of the ladies: Winnie Whitman, as she fumbles her way into love.

Thoughts

I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely adored the ARC I received of The Flyaway Bride, and since I couldn’t get my hands on a copy in Australia, I ended up emailing the author. She is amazing and sent me a copy of the first book in this series. It’s taken me a little while… but I finally managed to get around to reading this! And it was absolutely amazing! I loved Winnie’s story and getting to know her that much better left me smiling like a fool.

I don’t come from money or privilege, so I can’t imagine what it must be like to question every relationship and wonder why people are talking to me / trying to bond with me. It made it a little heartbreaking that Winnie had to constantly contend with such a reality. And that it was a misunderstanding of this exact nature that threw a spanner in the works.

There is a beautiful fate feeling to this whole story. One that makes you believe that Zane and Winnie are just meant to be together. After all, from the very first moment they just keep… tripping over one another. And, even though there is a little bit of a fight on Winnie’s side not to succumb… it’s not much of a fight at all.

This was a beautiful, adorable and wonderful story. One that I just couldn’t put down and forget about. It left me feeling happy and content. Which, for me, is what a good romance is all about. A lovely diversion from reality for a while.

Synopsis

The greatest witch ever born doesn’t know she is one.

He’ll usher her into a world she’d been kept from and protect her life with his own, but when their connection sets them on a course filled with darkness and lies, will their greatest risk be each other?

When the world learns who she is, he’ll die for her without question, but what if she lives? What if he does?

Thoughts

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I’m slowly getting used to reading books on my Kobo. And it’s stories like this that help draw me in and make me want to read ebooks. They may never be my favourite form of literary enjoyment, but they are definitely growing very happily on me. There was something amazing and wonderful about Madbury’s story and I can’t wait to read more tales of The Sevens!

I love that one of the drivers for Haley throughout this story is her love for her sister. Although they are somewhat estranged, she is still trying to find her and putting everything at risk just to save her baby sister. As an older sister, this was such a beautiful and realistic portrayal of what it is like to have a younger sibling. Even in the moments when I have felt distanced from my sister (which all siblings go through), just like Haley, I still would have moved heaven and earth to find her. And the fact that within the epilogue, it is clear that Penny also feels the same about her big sister… it’s just beautiful.

The immediate reaction between Haley and Lucas was nice. But what I liked the most was the way that they both got to know each other and worked towards each other in their acceptance of their attraction. Sometimes it can be a bit on the nose having a story in which immediate attraction means immediate love. In the case of this story, the immediate attraction was tempered by their willingness to get to know each other. It’s incredibly fun and beautiful.

At first I thought that this was a witch – vampire kind of story. The fact that it’s not, and the Seven find other ways to prolong their life was intriguing. I loved how Madbury built this amazing world and lore in such a subtle and unique way. It helps to draw you further and further into her world. I can’t believe that I didn’t get the chance to read the prologue before this novel though, I’d be interested to see how the world was built from the very first.

Splintered Stars is a fantastic paranormal fantasy story. it is filled with magic, mayhem and conspiracies. There is also that wonderful dose of lust and love throughout the story. this may be a paranormal romance story, but it was the conspiracy and sibling relationship that I loved the most… and I can’t wait to read the next story and find out what happens to Penny! And which Seven she falls for…

Dates read: 20th February – 1st March 2021
Pace: Medium
Format: Novel
Publisher: Berkley

Synopsis

Major Calbourne Rutherford returns to England on the trail of an assassin, only to find he’s become Lord Ashendon, with the responsibility for vast estates and dependent relatives. Cal can command the toughest men, but his wild half sisters are quite another matter. They might just be his undoing.

When he discovers that Miss Emmaline Westwood, the girls’ former teacher, guides them with ese, Cal offers her a marriage of convenience. But strong-minded and independent Emm is neither as compliant nor as proper as he expected, and Cal finds himself most inconveniently seduced by his convenient wife.

Emm knows they didn’t marry for love, yet beneath her husband’s austere façade, she catches glimpses of a man who takes her breath away. As pride, duty and passion clash, will these two stubborn hearts find more than they ever dreamed of?

Thoughts

Regency romances are the kind of books that are slowly gaining traction on my bookshelves. It’s one of those shelves that a year ago, there wasn’t much on it… but then I started buying more and more. Now, it’s a fairly big collection. This is my first foray into the stories of Anne Gracie. And I must say, I am so glad that I bought some of her books – they are awesome and beautiful!

From the prologue, I was intrigued about Emm’s past – after all, it starts with a rumor and her father trying to force her into marriage. Yet, you don’t quite know what happened and why. Which is one of the many sub-plots that will keep you reading throughout this story. You just want to know what sent Emm’s life so drastically off track. And it takes about three quarters of the book to find out the answer to that…

Cal is a bit of a reserved lead. I love that he is trying to do what he thinks is right – but can’t quite figure out what that actually is. He’s so very, very lost. Which just makes it all that much sweeter when Emm comes into his life and just… fixes all of the bits that have been turned upside down. Sometimes people just need a little bit of guidance, and Cal gets that constantly through his “marriage of convenience”.

It’s hard to imagine the world that Emm lives in – but, I love that she is able to maintain her sense of self, even when she gets kicked down again and again. She also makes sure that she protects and cares for the women under her protection. From the girls at the school, to the sisters and niece of Cal. They are constantly bolstered by this amazing woman and find a way to be themselves in a society that doesn’t necessarily support them.

I may love the romance aspect of this story, but I also love the feeling of women banding together. Not just in the way that Emm protects the girls, but also how they protect her. When rumors and horrible things come to light, it is the girls that ultimately protect and bolster Emm, her students and the women she’s befriended. We have way too many stories about women tearing each other down, so it’s nice to have one that features women supporting one another.

♦ If you use books that are in a language other than English, please translate those titles into English (even if there is no English title here on GR) for the purposes of our challenges, unless you plan to use that language for the entire challenge. If you do use another language for the whole challenge, please remember that the translations of exempt words/phrases — for example, A, An and The — would be exempt as well.

♦ For each book you read, please post a link to the title, and indicate the author and the date you finished reading it. If a challenge task gives several options, please make it clear which option you’ve chosen. If the task calls for an item on the cover or specific author initials or name/s, you must include a link to the book cover and/or author’s name, respectively. To avoid spoiling a book for other readers, please use spoiler tags when explaining your book choices.*
    * For help with posting spoiler tags, see this post: Spoiler tags
    * If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title, cover or author, see the instructions here: Add a link to the book title, book cover and/or author

♦ When you complete the challenge, please copy and paste your entire list as a new message at the end of the challenge thread. If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your links and formatting. If you don’t repost your list, with appropriate links, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge. Please do NOT simply post a link back to your original post.

THE TASKS :

1. There are about 17,500 species of butterflies in the world, and around 750 species in the United States. They have been around for at least 50 million years and probably first evolved some 150 million years ago. Representations of butterflies are seen in Egyptian frescoes at Thebes, which are 3,500 years old.
🦋 Read a book set before the year 1000; tell us when OR a book whose title begins with a letter in EGYPTIAN (disregard A, An and The) – Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salaam

2. A group of butterflies is known as a flutter. It is commonly believed that the word butterfly is a derived from butter-colored fly, which is attributed to the yellow of the male Brimstone butterfly (above). Due to their bright colors and visits to flowers, butterflies are the most familiar of insects to humans. They can be found all over the world, except in Antarctica.
🦋 Read a book with a cover that is almost entirely yellow; post the cover OR a book that has been translated into at least three languages other than the original; tell us the languagesHarmony’s Way by Lora Leigh

3. Butterflies (and moths) are part of the class of insects in the order Lepidoptera. To tell them apart, butterflies fly in bright sunshine, while moths are most active at night.
🦋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title (ALL words count!) can be found in LEPIDOPTERA (3-word minimum; a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the word) OR a book with a bright sunny scene shown prominently on the cover; post the cover

4. Butterflies and moths are the only group of insects that have scales covering their wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs and three body parts: the head, the thorax and the abdomen. The wings are attached to the thorax and they also have a pair of antennae, compound eyes and an exoskeleton – the skeleton is on the outside of the body. This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don’t dry out. Unlike other insects, though, they have the ability to coil up their proboscis. Until butterfly ears were identified in 2012, scientists thought butterflies were completely deaf.
🦋 Read a book originally published in 2012; tell us the pub date OR a book with a character who is deaf; tell us whoA Night Like This by Julia Quinn

5. Butterflies can vary greatly in size, from the Western Blue Pygmy (left) which is only about 1/2 inch across, to the female Queen Alexandrea’s birdwing(center), with a wingspan of nearly 10 inches. Some butterfly species are very fast; one, the Skipper Butterfly (right), can fly faster than a horse can run.
🦋 Read a book with natural wings (NOT airplane wings!) shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR the shortest book on your to-read list that is over 150 pages long; tell us how many pagesAngels’ Flight by Nalini Singh

6. The butterfly starts its life as an egg, laid on a leaf. The caterpillar (larva) hatches from the egg and eats the leaves or flowers on which the egg is laid. Caterpillars are usually very distinctive, and are sometimes more easily identified than the adult butterflies. The caterpillar eats voraciously to transform plant material into tissues that they will need for metamorphosis. It loses its skin as many as four times as it grows, increasing greatly in size. Eventually it turns into a pupa or chrysalis (cocoon). The caterpillar will spend multiple days, or weeks, inside the cocoon.
🦋 Read a book with a major character who eats a lot; tell us who OR a book with a predominantly green cover; post the coverCharmed by Charlie by Amanda Uhl (Val)

7. Inside the chrysalis, a developing butterfly waits to emerge with its wings collapsed around its body. When it finally breaks free of the pupal case, it greets the world with tiny, shriveled wings. The butterfly must immediately pump body fluid through its wing veins to expand them. Once its wings reach their full size, the butterfly must rest for a few hours to allow its body to dry and harden before it can take its first flight.
🦋 Read a book in which a birth occurs; tell us the page/location number OR a book originally published less than six months before you finished it; tell us when it was published – The Switch by Beth O’Leary (January 2021)

8. Butterflies can be very picky about where they lay their eggs to the point of laying said eggs in one type of plant. The first thing a caterpillar eats after it hatches from its cocoon is usually the shell of the cocoon itself. In some places, you can find so many caterpillars feeding on plants that you can actually hear them munching.
🦋 Read a book with an action verb ending in ING in the title OR a book with a character who is very picky about something; using spoiler tags, tell us who and what they’re picky about – Death by Diamonds by Annette Blair (Mad with vintage clothing)

9. An adult butterfly generally has a very short life: just three to four weeks. However, the entire life cycle of a butterfly can range between 2 and 8 months, depending on the species. Some migratory butterflies, such as the North American Monarch, can live as long as 7 to 8 months in one generation. The Brimstone butterfly has the longest lifetime of the adult butterflies: 9-10 months. During that time, it focuses all its energy on two tasks: eating and mating.
🦋 Read a book with at least two generations of the same family in the story; tell us who and their relationship OR the book most recently added to your to-read list (or the most recent add that you can get your hands on); tell us when you added itLove Hard by Nalini Singh (Esme, Jacob and Alison; three generations)

10. While most butterflies only eat nectar, some also eat some pollen, tree sap, or rotting fruit, especially in tropical locations. However, a butterfly cannot live on sugar alone; it needs minerals, too. To supplement its diet of nectar, a butterfly will sometimes sip from mud puddles, which are rich in minerals and salts. This behavior, called puddling, occurs more often in male butterflies, which incorporate the minerals into their sperm. These nutrients are then transferred to the female during mating and help improve the viability of her eggs. A group of butterflies puddling together is sometimes referred to as a “puddle club.”
🦋 Read a book with a drink/beverage shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book from a genre that is outside of your comfort zone; tell us the genre – Anna: A Teenager on the Run by Anna Podgajecki (war memoir)

11. Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet to help them find their host plants and locate food. A female butterfly lands on different plants, drumming the leaves with her feet until the plant releases its juices. Spines on the back of her legs have chemoreceptors that detect the right match of plant chemicals. When she identifies the right plant, she lays her eggs. A butterfly of any biological sex will also step on its food, using organs that sense dissolved sugars to taste food sources like fermenting fruit.
🦋 Read a book in which a major character is looking for something specific; using spoiler tags, tell us who is looking for what OR a book with bare feet shown prominently on the cover; post the coverMarry in Scandal by Anne Gracie

12. Butterflies need heat to be able to move. When you see them resting in the sunshine, they are warming up their wings so they can fly. They cannot fly if the air temperature falls below 55° Fahrenheit. Since they are cold blooded animals, they cannot regulate their body temperature, which renders them completely immobile in cold weather, unable to feed or to flee from predators. When air temperatures range from 82-100°F., though, they can fly with ease.
🦋 Read a book whose page total contains only numbers found in 1, 2, 5, 5, 8, 0, 0 (you can use 500, or 255, but not 588); tell us how many pages OR a book set in a location that is known for being cold most of the time; tell us the location – Oklahoma Christmas Blues by Maggie Shayne (Oklahoma)

13. Butterflies rank pretty low on the food chain, with lots of hungry predators – wasps, flies, frogs, spiders and birds, for example – happy to make a meal of them. Therefore, they need some defense mechanisms. Some butterflies fold their wings to blend into the background, using camouflage to make themselves all but invisible to predators. Others try the opposite strategy, wearing vibrant colors and patterns that boldly announce their presence. Bright colored insects often pack a toxic punch if eaten, so predators learn to avoid them.
🦋 Read a book in which the main character must avoid a predator of some sort; using spoiler tags, briefly explain OR a book with a bird shown prominently on the cover; post the coverEdge of the Moon by Rebecca York (the horrible serial killer)

14. Although they are not the only ones to migrate, butterfly migration is best exemplified by the Monarch, which is the only insect that migrates an average of 2500 miles to warmer climates in Mexico and California. This trip is so long that one butterfly will not be able to complete the whole journey during its lifetime. It takes multiple generations of butterflies to get to the end of the migration. The North American Monarch is one of the species that has been the most severely impacted by recent climate changes, with their numbers seeing dips and spikes over the last few years.
🦋 Read a book set in Mexico or California; tell us where OR a book with a monarch (king, queen or emperor; real or fictional) in the story; tell us who – A Man in a Kilt by Sandy Blair (king)

15. Four butterflies became extinct over the last 150 years. Butterflies (and moths) have been recognized as indicators of biodiversity. Their fragility makes them quick to react to change so their struggle to survive is a serious warning about our environment. Habitats have been destroyed on a massive scale, and now patterns of climate and weather are shifting unpredictably in response to pollution of the atmosphere.
🦋 Read a book whose primary focus is some type of environmental issue; tell us what OR a book by an author who has died; tell us the date/year of their passingSay Everything by Langley Gray (Bryan and the marine / shipping issues)

16. In addition, a number of various butterfly species are critically endangered because their natural habitats are being destroyed by human activity. All of the butterflies below are rare because they only live in one specific area.

A. MACEDONIAN GRAYLING | Current estimated numbers : about 3000
This rare European butterfly is only found in the village of Pletvar in Macedonia, which has become vulnerable because of quarrying in the area.

B. SINAI BATON BLUE | Current estimated numbers: about 2300
This is not only one of the rarest butterflies in the world, it is also believed to be the world’s smallest. It is native to one area in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

C. SCHAUS SWALLOWTAIL | Current estimated numbers: 800–1200
Once considered the rarest butterfly in Florida, with numbers dipping to just a few hundred, the wild population of these butterflies has recovered, thanks in large part to a captive breeding program, after which the scientists released 50 adult butterflies and 200 caterpillars back into the wild.

D. LANGE’S METALMARK | Current estimated numbers: fewer than 450
Found only in the Antioch Sand Dunes in California, this species is dying off because the butterflies will only lay eggs on one specific type of buckwheat. Without that plant, females flutter around and land on other plants – but they won’t lay eggs.

E. ISLAND MARBLE | Current estimated numbers: fewer than 200
This butterfly had not been seen for over 100 years and was declared extinct before being rediscovered in 1998 on San Juan Island, off the coast of Washington state. Although scientists have worked hard to help the population of Island Marbles grow, its numbers have continued to drop.

F. MIAMI BLUE | Current estimated numbers: fewer than 100
In the past, this was quite common and found along the coastal mainland of Florida. Today, its numbers have dwindled significantly and its range has also shrunk to just the Florida Keys. The butterflies’ numbers first took a major hit in the 1980s when Florida’s coastal development took off. Then in 1992, the Miami Blue was nearly wiped out completely by Hurricane Andrew.
🦋 Choose one of these rare butterflies. Read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in the butterfly’s name AND with a total page count that includes TWO of the numbers in the current estimated numbers posted above; post a link to the author’s GR page AND tell us how many pages – Archangel’s Consort by Nalini Singh (324 pp.) (Sinai Baton Blue, 2300)

17. Butterflies will visit any garden, however small, if they can feed on suitable nectar plants. Nectar provides butterflies and moths with energy to fly and find a mate. In spring, it helps butterflies refuel after winter hibernation or a grueling journey. In autumn, nectar helps butterflies and moths to build up their energy reserves so they have the best chance of surviving hibernation or the journey back to warmer climes.
To attract butterflies to your yard or garden :
* They like warmth, so choose sunny, sheltered spots when planting.
* Choose different plants to attract a wider variety of species.
* Place the same types of plant together in blocks.
* Try to provide flowers right through the butterfly season. Spring flowers are vital for butterflies coming out of hibernation and autumn flowers help butterflies build up their reserves for winter.
* Don’t use insecticides and pesticides – they kill butterflies and many pollinating insects as well as ladybirds, ground beetles and spiders.
🦋 Read a book with a flower garden shown or a field of wildflowers prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book set in the spring; tell us when
