Synopsis

A man of few words, Ranger Jay Daniels values the calm, quiet solitude of the Great Smoky Mountains. Never quite fitting in with either side of his family, he prefers the company of birds and trees to people.

Yeah, he’d most definitely prefer a bird—any bird, any bird at all, take a vulture for instance—to the human-tornado hybrid that just blew onto his peaceful stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

The path of true love never has run smooth for Olive Perry. After getting dumped and promptly abandoned in the middle of her multi-month hike, Olive swears off men. Determined to finish the long trek by herself, she doesn’t need a prince—or broody and taciturn ranger—to save her.

Yet, when an early snowstorm threatens the mountains, and Ranger Daniels is charged with getting hikers to safety, that includes hot-tempered Olive Perry. Snowed in and forced to share an abandoned cabin, can Olive’s heated intensity melt Jay’s cool reserve?

And if so, will this happy trail lead to true love? Or will their time together be just another bump in the road?

Thoughts

For someone who has been loving the Penny Reid books, I have taken a while to dive into the rest of her SmartyPants Romance world. And as the very first furrow into this journey and world…. I think I picked a good one with Happy Trail. This was fun, light and had just enough connection to the Winston Brothers whilst also being an amazing and independent journey on its own.

I really enjoyed how Prescott was able to weave cultural identity and that feeling of being split throughout this story. Jay’s crisis of personhood, being centred around his half Japanese heritage was so well written. And it also highlighted the ways in which we make assumptions about “belonging” based on a person’s looks.

I really enjoyed Olive’s character arc throughout this story. She is fun and quirky and has zero filter (something I too tend to have issues with). Yet, she does a lot of maturing throughout this story. At the beginning of the hike she is another spoilt girl with no clue as to who she is. But, as she hikes and learns how to feel comfortable with herself… she really becomes her own, wonderful strong person. One that I continuously fell in love with.

Even though this story had a bit of an insta love feeling, the relationship is ultimately based on getting to know one another. Alright, it happens in a very short amount of time. But its built on a foundation of conversations, not lust. I also love that although Olive feels the pull of her feelings for Jay, she does hesitate and refuses to just dive right into his life and an identity as his girlfriend. She even finishes her goals before taking that final step. Which all made me very, very happy.

I loved this book. And although I got a free eBook version, within chapters I went online and ordered not only the paperback version, but also the next book in the series… Stranger Ranger. Now I just have to be patient and wait for them to arrive…

The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine | 9781416524724 | Booktopia

Title: The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy: Or Everything Your Doctor Won’t Tell You
Author: Vicki Iovine
Rating Out of 5: 4.5 (Amazing, but not quite perfect)
My Bookshelves: Humour, Non-fiction, Pregnancy
Dates read: 17th June – 3rd July 2021
Pace: Slow
Format: Novel
Publisher: Pocket Books
Year: 1995
5th sentence, 74th page: Second, save the home births, midwives, and underwater deliveries for second, third, and fourth babies.

Synopsis

YOUR DOCTOR GIVES YOU MEDICAL ADVICE. YOUR MOTHER BUYS YOU BABY CLOTHES. BUT WHO CAN GIVE YOU THE REAL SKINNY WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT?

Your Girlfriends, of course – at least, the ones who’ve been through the exhilaration and exhaustion, the agony and ecstasy of pregnancy. Four-time delivery room veteran Vicki Iovine, “the Carrie Bradshaw of pregnancy” (Wall Street Journal), talks to you the way only a best friend can – in the book that will go the whole nine months for every mother-to-be. Now, in this newly revised and updated edition, get the lowdown on all those little things that are too strange or embarrassing to ask, practical tips, and hilarious takes on everything pregnant.

What Really Happens to Your Body – from morning sickness and gas to eating everything in sight – and what it’s like to go from being a babe to having one.

The Many Moods of Pregnancy – why you’re so irritable / distracted / tired / light-headed (or at least more than usual).

Plus, the latest scoop on…

Staying Stylish – You may be pregnant, but you can still be the fashionista you’ve always been (or at least you don’t have to look like a walking beach ball) – wearing the hippest designers and proudly showing off your bump.

Pregnancy Is Down to a Science – from in vitro fertilization to a scheduled C-section, the latest technology provides so many options, alternatives, and tests, it can all be downright confusing.

… and much more! For a reassuring voice or just a few good belly laughs, turn to this straight-talking guide on what to really expect when you’re expecting.

Thoughts

So obviously I read this because I’m pregnant and, me being me, I need to know everything I possibly can about what what expect. But, I also didn’t want to read something that was preachy. This book was the perfect fit. It was funny and light in places, serious in others. And, it highlights the fact that we all experience pregnancy differently, there is no right or wrong way and it’s about getting through it sane!!

Unlike some of my other books, this isn’t split into the different times in pregnancy (week, trimester, etc). Instead, it’s split by topics. I particularly liked the section on exercise since I’ve been feeling guilty for not exercising as much as I used to. Iovine helped me to feel so much less guilty about it all.

I love that whilst you get Iovine’s own experiences. You also got those of her friends. She CONSTANTLY points out that everyone has a different experience. I think its something seriously important, and she also points out that you get to be a little selfish and insane at times…

All in all, I loved this book. And will probably refer to it multiple times throughout my pregnancy. It’s that comfort of having a friend say nope, you’re not nuts… but at any time of day or night whenever you need it… and it would be inappropriate to ACTUALLY call your girlfriends.

A Chesapeake Shores Christmas by Sherryl Woods

Overview
A Chesapeake Shores Christmas, Chesapeake Shores Novel by Sherryl Woods | 9780778312628 | Booktopia

Title: A Chesapeake Shores Christmas
Author: Sherryl Woods
Series: Chesapeake Shores #4
Rating Out of 5: 4.5 (Amazing, but not quite perfect)
My Bookshelves: Christmas, Contemporary, Contemporary romance
Dates read: 30th June – 3rd July 2021
Pace: Medium
Format: Novel
Publisher: Mira
Year: 2010
5th sentence, 74th page: Lawrence chuckled.

Synopsis

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Sherryl Woods brings the O’Brien family home for a heartwarming Christmas…

After years apart, Mick and Megan O’Brien are finally ready to make it official… again. Most of their grown children couldn’t be happier about their rekindled love and impending marriage this holiday season. Only Connor is a holdout. Driven to become a divorce attorney after what he views as his mother’s abandonment of their family, Connor’s not about to give his blessing to this reunion romance

The last thing Megan wants to do is hurt her family again. After all, is she really sure she and Mick can make it this time around? And when an unexpected delivery causes chaos, it seems only a miracle can reunite this family.

Of course, it II is II Christmas – the season of miracles.

Thoughts

This was one of those fun, cute and easy reads. It’s been a while since I’ve visited Chesapeake Shores (because I didn’t have any more of the books, rectifying that situation immediately). So it was nice to just slip right back in… like putting on a well loved coat.

Megan and Mick are a good lead for the chaotic of the family of O’Briens. I enjoyed their reconciliation and how it kind of closed off the first three siblings with their happily ever afters. All the while setting up the next two Chesapeake Shores books perfectly.

I may have read this Christmas story in the middle of the year… but I do always love a good Christmas tale. They just have this extra layer of hope that always seems to surround the season. It’s that feeling of family and together-ness that Woods is able to capture in this story. The story becomes less about Megan and Mick, more about family. Connor and Megan in particular.

This was such a happy feel good book. One I very much enjoyed. And one that was a great reminder of how much I love my family. And Sherryl Wood’s romances.

THE TASKS

1. Nobody is quite sure who first created S’more, but it is believed the recipe was created by the Campfire Girls or the Girl Scouts in or around 1927. The gooey treat didn’t gain mainstream popularity, though, until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
🔶 Read a book set in the 1960s or 1970s; tell us when OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in CAMPFIRE (a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the phrase); post a link to the author’s GR pageSky of Ash by Rachel Madbury

2. For the uninitiated, a s’more is made by layering a Graham cracker square, a hunk of chocolate, a toasted marshmallow, and another Graham cracker square. Some folks like to add a dollop of peanut butter or hazelnut spread to the tasty treat, but be sure to smoosh it all down to help the chocolate melt and to get a taste of marshmallow in every bite.
🔶 Read a book whose cover shows some kind of chocolate; post the cover OR a book to which you would like to add “a little something” to make it better; using spoiler tags, tell us whatThe Edge of Heaven by E.M. Lindsey (poetic justice / revenge)

3. S’more folklore suggests that s’mores got their name right by the campfire. After eating one, young kids chanted “gimme some more!” “Some more” quickly became s’more, and before long, s’mores became a campfire staple for everyone.
🔶 Read a book with a contraction in its title OR a book with fire shown prominently on the cover; post the coverFuries of Calderon by Jim Butcher

4. The largest s’more, made at the Deer Run Camping Resort in Gardners, Pennsylvania (USA), in May 2014, weighed 267 pounds (121.11kg). Although traditionalists insist on toasting the marshmallow over a campfire, s’mores can be baked in an oven or even made in a microwave.
🔶 Read a book in which someone goes camping; tell us who OR a book set in Pennsylvania; tell us whereA Wild Life by Martin Hughes-Games

5. Graham crackers were created in 1829 by evangelical minister Sylvester Graham (that’s why “Graham” should always be capitalized), who believed in healthy eating. He also believed carnal desires were inspired by the rich, fatty goods Americans were consuming, so he thought his crackers would help curb physical arousal.
🔶 Read a book that features a religious leader; tell us who and their position OR a book with ROMANCE on its main GR pageWitching Moon by Rebecca York

6. Chocolate is made from cacao beans, grown mostly in West Africa on small, family-owned farms. A cacao tree takes 4-5 years to produce its first beans, and each tree produces about 2500 beans. It takes 400 beans to make one pound of chocolate, and 2-4 days to make a single-serving chocolate bar.
🔶 Read a book set in Africa; tell us which country OR a series book #2, 4 or 5; tell us the series name and the series positionEmerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews (Catalina Baylor Trilogy #2; Hidden Legacy #5)

7. Marshmallows owe their name to the marsh-mallow plant, a perennial flowering herb that grows in marshes, whose roots were used to make the sticky treat. Today’s marshmallows are made from sugar, water and gelatin whipped to a squishy consistency, molded in cylindrical pieces of varying sizes (mini, regular and jumbo), then coated with cornstarch to prevent sticking. Today, Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows every year, and it is estimated that more than 50% of them sold during the summer are toasted over a fire.

2. S-T-R-A-W-B-E-R-R-Y
In celebration of perhaps one of the most tasty and scrumptious berries out there, read a book that begins with one of the letters in ‘strawberry’ or that has a red cover.Witching Moon by Rebecca York

3. Wildflowers
Beautiful, simple, and humble are the wildflowers, gently swaying in the summer breeze. What a lovely and wonderful sight to behold! As long as you don’t have allergies, that is. To complete this challenge, read a book that is a breath of fresh air! Something new. Or, read a book that has a flower on the cover. The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones

4. Indubitably, my dear Watson
Sometimes in literature we hear about fabulous duos that always get into trouble and all sorts of mischief, but then we never get around to reading those books. Well now is the time to do so! Read any book that has a well known duo. – The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

5. Gadgetry
Steampunk is perhaps one of the funnest genres out there! Such adventure and excitement await in alternate retelling of history, full of gizmos, gadgets, and all sorts of inventions. Read any kind of steampunk book that titillates the mind. – The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason

6. Gimme Some Sugar
Whether it’s hot or cold, cakes, cookies, ice cream, croissants, custards and the like will always hit the spot and appease the sweet tooth. 7. Lady’s Best Friend
Some people might say that a diamond is a woman’s best friend, but I beg to differ! Dogs are indeed a woman’s best bud. They are always there when you need them and they also act as a living hoover. It’s fantastic! Read any book that has a pup on the cover or that appears in the pages. – Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews

8. Oddball
Side characters, rarely do they ever get enough credit. And sometimes they’re even better written than the main. As an ode to the unsung hero, read a book where a side character outshines the main, or read a spin off from the main series that finally gives the side character the development and adventure they deserve.Bring Me Home for Christmas by Robyn Carr

9. Deep in the Mountainside
Rumors of large beasts in the woods have persisted for years. Savage creatures who guzzle up unsuspecting wanderers, or at least that’s what the myths say. Perhaps they’re wrong? Are dragons friend, foe, or charming gentlemen who wish to be left alone? You decide! Read any book with a dragon in it that suits your fancy. – The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin

10. Chivalry might be Dead
Sometimes in the beginning of a series the main fella might seem like a gentleman. Then as time goes on, you realize he is far from one. In fact, it turns out he’s a big jerk!
