Synopsis

Hailed by Christine Feehan as a major new talent, New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh brings two fierce changelings together in her most explosive story yet.

Though DarkRiver sentinel Mercy is feeling the pressure to mate, she savagely resists when Riley Kincaid, a lieutenant from the SnowDancer pack, tries to possess her. The problem is not simply that he pushes her buttons; the problem is that he’s a wolf, she’s a cat, and they’re both used to being on top.

But when a brilliant changeling researcher is kidnapped from DarkRiver territory, Mercy and Riley must work together to track the young man – before his shadowy captors decide he’s no longer useful. Along the way, the two dominants may find that submitting to one another uncovers not just a deadly conspiracy, but a passion so raw that it could leave them both branded by fire…

Thoughts

I’ve always been a stronger believer in the idea that opposites attract, so it was a pleasure to read a story about two characters that were oil and water, cat and dog (literally). Mercy and Riley are the perfect example of how opposites are able to work together to become better versions of themselves, and help their other half become what is needed. Riley’s rigid, unyielding, ruled nature is offset by Mercy’s firey, free and spirited attitude. Yet, it is their ability to work together that is the most admirable and enviable.

Although there is heat and passion from the beginning of Branded by Fire, there is a lot more resistance to the idea of Riley and Mercy tying their lives together. Partly it is due to their reluctance to pursue someone so contrary to their expectations, in spite of the physical attraction. But it is also partly due to their inability to completely submit to one another. Where the past Psy-Changeling stories have focused on female characters with a spine of steel, they have also been softer, and more submissive than their counterparts – a good balance to the pushy dominance of a male who is used to being in charge. However, Mercy is herself a soldier and incredibly pushy, and unwilling to give up her identity for the sake of a man. Which is why she is by far one of my favourite leads in the Psy-Changeling stories.

Synopsis

A changeling who can never shift lives a life of quiet frustration – until he learns how to let his leopard come out and play…

Thoughts

Dorian is one of my favourite sentinels in the DarkRiver pack – his ability to overcome his lack of shifting, and be one of the most terrifying and successful protectors of the pack is impressive. So, discovering a bit more about his past as a non-shifting leopard, and the troubles of not quite belonging was a great new by-line to read about.

The jumping from one point in time to another until Dorian’s experience as a newly shifted leopard is told was a unique way to tell his tale. It was a short novella, but much of Dorian’s life as a changeling is imparted in such a small amount of words. His ties to his pack members and family are shown through their acceptance and pride in his new found freedom.

Synopsis

Stroke of Enticement introduces Annie, a wary young teacher who is sceptical about love, and who arouses that man – and the leopard- in the aggressive changeling Zach Quinn. He must prove his affections are true if he’s to win her over.

Thoughts

I loved the beginning of this story – Bryan’s stubbornness and, cuteness, sprung from the page as the seven year-old argued with his teacher. The resultant courtship between Bryan’s uncle Zach and his teacher Annie followed this tone. It was cute, sweet and full of two people who are as stubborn as one another to get their own way in life.

The prejudice and worry of Annie’s mother was both endearing and frustrating – understandable when you view it through the lens of Annie’s past, but irritating when her present is considered. However, the prejudice of her academic family is quickly altered as more of Annie’s familial life is unfolded. Annie’s acceptance of this aspect of her mother’s personality was truly about unconditional love, and accepting the love of someone else, even when it might be more than a little irritating.

Zach, much like Nate, and many other men that have a possessive, protective streak, has a serious faux pas. His wish to protect Annie from the big, nasty world and realities of their mating, has the exact opposite effect.

Synopsis

In a deep-sea station, Tazia Nerif has found her life’s work as an engineer, keeping things running smoothly. But she wants nothing more than to break down the barrier of silence between her and her telekinetic Psy station commander…

Thoughts

This was a nice little side story in the world of the Psy-Changeling novels – I really don’t see that it had anything to do with the main storyline, but it was a great story regardless. Tazi and Stefan’s love story fits beautifully into the themes of this series – overcoming the past and one’s upbringing to embrace another’s love.

Tazi was such a different lead female to the rest of the characters in this series – although most of the others were virgins, or had their own insecurities, Tazi was in a league of her own. She had incredibly strong ties to her family and culture – and although the scars left by her past are still an obstacle to get over, it is her love of family and cultural moxis that ultimately shape the way she acts and goes through life.

Stefan was a traditional Psy, in the beginning of the story, it was almost impossible to see how he could feel connected to Tazia on any level other than a professional one. The twists and turns that the characters went through to establish a relationship was fascinating and very surprising in some places.

Synopsis

In Beat of Temptation, meet innocent Tamsyn who has always had a place in her heart for Nathan, a fully blooded DarkRiver sentinel. But is she really ready for the fierce demands of the mating bond?

Thoughts

This story was so sweet that it bought tears to my eyes – although, what more could you expect from the love story of Tammy and Nate? Add to that fact that this was also a Christmas story, and this is quite possibly the sweetest, most endearing paranormal romance story that I have read in a long time. Although, like the rest of the Psy-Changeling stories, there is the steamy attraction between Nate and Tammy, this somehow screams innocence far more potently than the other stories.

Christmas has always been a time of family and surrounding yourself with people that you love (and those you must tolerate), and this story reminded me of the beauty of coming together. The symbolism of Tammy’s giant, living Christmas tree was a great way to highlight this. The juxtaposition of this beautiful time of year and Nate’s pigheadedness worked beautifully and helped to pluck at my heart strings throughout the story.

Thoughts

This was a great collection of Psy-Changeling short stories, each with its own beautiful love story that helps build upon the amazingly intricate world that Singh has so painstakingly built. I love that each tale can be read in isolation to the series, but they can help to introduce peripheral characters that are mentioned within the main novels.

The four short stories in this collection are not only held together by their romantic themes and their ability to remind us all that we can all find love, but also in their ease of reading and simplicity. Where the couples in the key novels in the Psy-Changeling series are constantly fighting against themselves, one another and their circumstances, those within the stories in Wild Invitation have shorter, and far less dramatic courtships. That’s not to say that there isn’t a flavour of drama to keep us intrigued, but it is not so frustrating to constantly read about couples that are only ever capable of messing up their potential relationships.

A great introduction to the world of Psy-Changeling if you’re curious about this fantastic paranormal romance series. Singh manages to make you feel emotionally connected to every single one of her characters, hoping to see them triumph in their chosen lives.

Synopsis

Agent of Death, Maddy Black, is sent on a mission by her many-greats grandfather, Lucifer,to retrieve the mythical Red Shoes. These shoes will force the person wearing them to dance non-stop. They are currently in the possession of Sammy Blue, ambassador for Maddy’s newest foe, faerie Queen Amarantha.

Thoughts

The writing techniques utilised throughout this short story were nothing short of phenomenal. And that doesn’t even begin to describe the storyline and phenomenal characters that are splashed across the pages with a brilliant vividity. Although I haven’t (yet) had the privilege of reading the rest of the series, this short provided a great gateway into the series and the very sassy character of Maddy.

I’m completely in love with the characterisation and creation of Beezle. He is like a hyperactive, supernatural, talking puppy with attitude.

Sassy characters and incredible supernatural powers, this story has it all and I can’t wait until my version of Black Wings arrives!

Synopsis

Madeline Black is an Agent of Death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her…

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy’s being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves – her body-guard, Gabriel, and her gargoyle, Beezle – disappear. But because Maddy is Lucifer’s granddaughter, things are expected of ther, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Dear old granddad wants Maddy to go to the faerie court and negotiate a new land and power treaty. The fallen’s last emissary was decapitated, so it’s up to Maddy to keep her head – both literally and figuratively…

Thoughts

This was a great sequel to Black Wings – it had the same wit and humour, Maddy’s same ability to stumble unwittingly into problem after problem, and a gorgeous cast that you couldn’t help but feel attached to. Maddy’s clumsiness, and talent for putting her foot in her mouth have turned her into one of the most relatable heroines I have read recently. I’m constantly tripping over my own feet and getting confused about what I’m supposed to be doing in life – much like Maddy.

Most of the heroines in stories have their vulnerabilities and are often sassy, but Maddy is a thirty-something year-old virgin with almost no clue what she is doing. It’s rare that there is a story about a virgin of that age, but adding to that the fact that Maddy is literally floundering for the vast majority of her adventures, although there is still plenty of sass in every drowning moment. Black Night highlighted this beautifully – she messes up negotiations with the Faerie Queen from the very beginning. Yet, even though she knows that she is deeply in trouble, she manages to hold her head high and somehow wade her way out of the muck that she has found herself in.

Black Night also brings us closer to Maddy’s supposed fiancé Nathaniel, and highlights the depth of her feelings for Gabriel. Throwing J.B. into the mix creates a wonderfully sticky and complex web of relationships that I for one, do not envy. The stark contrast in the three men adds flavour to the mix – their different personalities and approaches to Maddy creates a more confusing attraction between her and them, at least in some circumstances.

Synopsis

As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It’s a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.

Maddy’s position may come with magical abilities and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn’t pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.

Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy’s building. It’s probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in, demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos.

Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell…

Thoughts

I am completely in love with this series. Or at least, this book, as this is all I have read of the series so far. Black Wings has a witty, independent and sassy heroine who spends most of the time running around kicking butt and yelling at people when they make her mad. Definitely my kind of woman. The fact that she has supernatural powers and the world’s most adorable side-kick just makes this book so, so, so much better.

I always enjoy books that leave you guessing – wondering what’s going on, what happened in the past, who is aligned with, or related to whom. Maddie’s parentage, and the death of her mother are two major points that drive the story, but the story behind these aspects of her life are slowly trickled out throughout the novel. Likewise, the truth about Gabriel and her enemies is slowly told to the world.

As someone who has issues with authority, I can definitely sympathise with Maddie’s inability to just do as she is commanded. Although this constantly gets her into trouble throughout the story (telling people no in no uncertain terms isn’t necessarily the best way in which to endear oneself to your superiors), it also helps her to find her own path and place within life.

Synopsis

Anna never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack… and became one herself. After three years at the bottoms of the pack, she’d learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. Then Charles Cornick, the enforcer – and son – of the leader of the North American werewolves, came into her life.

Charles insists that not only is Anna his mate, but she is also a rare and valued Omega wolf. And it is Anna’s inner strength and calming presence that will prove invaluable as she and Charles go on the hunt in search of a rogue werewolf – a creature bound in magic so dark that it could threaten all of the pack…

Thoughts

This is a great tale that reminds us that strength and power isn’t necessarily tied in with size and looks – sometimes the most fragile of us is able to overpower the strongest. Anna’s inability to recognise her own abilities and power are not only realistic – we often forget that our greatest strength sometimes lies in the ways that we are able to care for and love others. This is echoed in the trouble which Charles and Anna have with their mating bond – it is only when Anna accepts herself and her powers that she truly accepts their bonded love.

Love is an overarching theme within the story – Asil’s past and future collide beautifully with his love for his lost mate. These bonds that tie the gorgeous cast together help to highlight the great power that love holds over all of us. The ties of family, lovers and friends all coalesced in a way that not only highlights their importance to our fundamental being, but also the ways in which such relationships can be used against us.

More of Bran’s history and his pack is outlined in Cry Wolf, even the reason for his more bizarre choice in a mate is explained. As is his relationship to both his sons and the power that he keeps beautifully hidden under a cloak of ambiguity.

Cry Wolf is a fantastic beginning to the tale of Anna and Charles, and well worth the read. It carries you on a journey of fascination and fear.
