Synopsis

The werewolf Anna finds a new sense of self when the son of the werewolf king comes to town to quell unrest in the Chicago pack – and inspires a power in Anna that she’s never felt before.

Thoughts

Anna is one of the sweetest literary characters that I have read in paranormal fantasy in a long time. Her introduction in this short story bought out a new aspect of the Mercedes Thompson universe and ran beautifully alongside Moon Called.

And then there is Charles… I love Adam and Samuel, but I still think that Charles is my favourite werewolf. The mixture of his position as werewolf assassin and Native American medicine man (for lack of a better term) leaves a strong and intriguing character. Within the first few paragraphs, he leaps off the page and his silent presence engulfs you. Anna’s sweet vulnerability is a beautiful contrast to both his overbearing presence and unemotional role within the Pack is one of my favourite dynamics in Briggs’ books.

The idea of an Omega is something that I had never considered before, but there are certainly those that seem to fit this bill in our everyday lives. The idea of somebody who is protective, but not violent; dominant, but doesn’t require followers is a great change from the general leaders and followers structure of most societies and social systems.

Synopsis

In “Seeing Eye” by Patricia Briggs, a blind witch helps sexy werewolf Tom Franklin find his missing brother–and helps him in more ways than either of them ever suspected.

Thoughts

A great and fascinating short story – and a wonderful pre-introduction into the Alpha & Omega series. Moira and Tom’s meeting is a great way to not only introduce new characters into the Mercy-verse setting, but also provide more information to the world of witchcraft. The idea of White and Black Witches is a complex issue that is introduced in Cry Wolf, and, although the terror of a Black Witch is beautifully displayed, the ability of a very powerful White Witch such as Moira was a great new angle with which to explore Briggs’ intense and intricate world.

I love that both Moira and Tom are physically scarred and, to most, terrifying on the eyes – but, their ability to look past that (at least in Tom’s case) was incredibly sweet. This ability to love and care for one another in spite of all fits in beautifully with the rest of this series. I am actually disappointed that thus far they haven’t played a larger part in the Mercy-verse series – maybe something that will be rectified in the future.

5th sentence, 74th page: She looked away and pulled smoked venison and a jug of iced tea out of the bag.

Synopsis

Scarred, solitary Derek Gaunt has separated from his Pack, and is truly a lone wolf. With no family he answers to no one; but is fiercely loyal to a chosen few. So, when several of those close to him are murdered, he’ll stop at nothing to hunt their killer through the magic-drenched streets of Atlanta.

Never one to be left on the sidelines, equally determined—some might say stubborn—Julie Lennart-Olsen soon joins in his pursuit; and what began as revenge turns into a race to save the city. Their search pits them against powers they never imagined and magic so old, it predates history. It may cost Derek his life, but there are things for which even he would risk everything.

Thoughts

I haven’t read any of the Kate Daniels books for a little while, since I was waiting for this short novella to arrive, and honestly, I had forgotten how violent these stories were. And how much I LOVE them! The entire series is filled with sass and dry wit, and Magic Stars was absolutely no different. Derek’s first short story and his friendship with Julie are beautifully told in this story. As are some of the aspects of their lives that can’t make it into the main novels.

Derek’s role as the Grey Wolf and his opinions at his trajectory through the Pack are outlined within the first half of the book. Although we have watched his change from happy, bright young wolf to the Grey Wolf from Kate’s POV, it is nice to see how the circumstances of his past have shaped and changed him. As with his different status near loupism, Derek is completely unique and fascinating within the world of Kate Daniels. And definitely worth his own short story.

Julie’s childhood crush on Derek has been alluded to within other books, but as she seems to have grown into herself and her own powers, this seems to have become a more mature regard. Her views of him and simple acceptance of all that he is and does hints at a really great romance to come. Or at least, that’s the way I read the story.

Synopsis

A warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people. But she quickly discovers that the beast isn’t a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself.

Thoughts

This short story was a constant surprise for me – the tale never took me where I expected, which is always such a pleasant surprise when reading a new story and author. The twists and turns that The Beast of Blackmoor Bog took me on in such a short story were thrillingly enjoyable and I am now busy hunting for more writing by Vane.

This story had a really old school, medieval feel to it – I couldn’t help but think of Conan the Barbarian while I read it, and it was a really nice change from the majority of stories that I seem to be sinking my teeth into at the moment. The battle field and the setting in which this story takes place is all too easy to see and compare to the landscape of pre-Christian Europe. A locale full of potential when writing and reading a new story.

Vane excellently flicked between the POVs of the two main characters – it was subtly done, but all the more insightful for it. This change between third person POV allows the reader to gain understanding of both of the characters’ motivations and drivers, their hopes and fears throughout the tale. But, due to Vane’s incredible talent, it was done without interrupting the flow of the story.

Synopsis

Four masters of urban fantasy and paranormal romance plunge readers into the dangerous, captivating world unearthed beyond the dark…

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh delivers a smoldering story with Secrets at Midnight , as the scent of Bastien Smith’s elusive lover ignites a possessiveness in him that’s as feral as it is ecstatic. And now that he’s found his mate, he’ll do anything to keep her.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews’ novella, Magic Steals , when people start going missing, shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau and jaguar shifter Jim Shrapshire must uncover the truth about the mysterious creatures responsible.

From Milla Vane—a warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people. But she quickly discovers that the beast isn’t a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself.

It’s seer Makenna Frazier’s first day on the job at Supernatural Protection and Investigations, and her first assignment is more than she bargained for when bodyguard duty for a leprechaun prince’s bachelor party goes every which way but right in national bestselling author Lisa Shearin’s Lucky Charms.

Thoughts

I loved, loved, loved this enthralling collection of four short stories. The underlying theme of paranormal romance provided a darker side to some great stories, but also a sense of joy and hope in each journey.

Each and every tale within this book left me smiling and wanting more – so much so that I went and bought a book by each of the authors immediately after I put the book down.

Using our inner desires and our animalistic nature in such a fascinating way was a task that was pursued differently by each author, but helped to tie the four stories together. If you liked one, you’d probably (definitely) like all four.

Synopsis

Molly doesn’t look her age. In fact, Molly never will, having already been around for centuries with no signs of wear. That’s because Molly is a succubus—not demonic, but cursed. A victim rather than victimizer—and more than sympathetic to the gorgeous and naked man she finds hiding in the woods. Unlike Molly though, he has no memory of his past—only that he’s being hunted for reasons he can’t explain. Now they must both try and solve the riddle of his origin before his past—or even hers—reaches out of the darkness to destroy them.

Thoughts

This short World of the Lupi story really helped to fill in the gaps of some of what happened to Cullen during Tempting Danger.  Although it wasn’t integral to the understanding of the story, it did help to fill in some gaps as to how Cullen was captured and why. It also provided a little more feedback on the Lupi’s arch nemesis – something that I think will become far more important as the series progresses.

Although Tempting Danger helps to set up the following books and draw you into World of the Lupi, for me, it was Originally Human that has really set up the mystery and overarching battle which I’m sure is to come. Molly’s past and Michael’s creation are intricate puzzle pieces – ones that I’m not quite sure where they fit. This, alongside the romance and passion between them is a great way in which to throw the reader into the figurative storm on the horizon of the Lupi’s tale.

Although this is predominately a paranormal romance with steamy sexual tension, it is Molly’s desire for family and a place to belong that really drew me to her character. She might be the epitome of sexuality, but it is her softness, and kind and caring heart that make you truly fall in love with her character and story.

Synopsis

National bestselling author Eileen Wilks has thrilled countless readers with her fresh and compelling stories. Now she has created a bold new world where the magical and the mundane coexist in an uneasy balance – a balance that is threatened by a cold-blooded killer. And the only one who can end the threat is a cop on her own knife-edge struggling with a particularly tempting danger…

Lily Yu is a San Diego police detective investigating a series of grisly murders that appear to be the work of a werewolf. To hunt down the killer, she must infiltrate the clans. Only one man can help her – a werewolf named Rule Turner, a prince of the lupi, whose charismatic presence disturbs Lily. Rule has his own reasons for helping the investigation – reasons he doesn’t want to share with Lily. Logic and honor demand she keep her distance, but the attraction between them is immediate and devastating – and beyond human reason. Now in a race to fend off evil, Lily finds herself in uncharted territory, tested as never before, and, at her back, a man she’s not sure she can trust…

Thoughts

Tempting Danger is a great adult, paranormal romance read with a tale that stuck with me long after I turned the last page. Although the storyline can be a little predictable – you know that the two leads are going to end up together, the way in which this relationship blossoms was completely unpredictable – at least in my opinion.

Lily is a great heroine, and a breath of fresh air in paranormal romances – she isn’t pushy and strong in the way that many of my favourite heroines are. Instead, she is silently confident and very much withdrawn into her own reality and self. She is so pulled in upon herself that when I started reading the story, she seemed to be a privileged Chinese woman with a nice (albeit slightly gross) job. However, as the exciting events of the story unfold, her resolve is shown to be strong and her drive to pursue justice enviable. I loved slowly unpacking the layers of this character as the story progressed, and look forward to the further layering of Lily and Rule in the next World of the Lupi book.

Aside from the multi-layered and fascinating characters and the romantic storyline, Tempting Danger was a great ‘who-done-it’ story? Starting with a murder and steadily going down the windy path of divine intervention, fierce Grandmothers and conspiracies, it was difficult to put this book down – even if I have read it once before (a long time ago). If you like paranormal romances with a heavy dose of suspense, then this is a book that is definitely worth sticking your nose into.

Synopsis

Lily is a Chinese-American detective working with the city of San Diego on a murder that appears to be the work of a werewolf. But, if she wants to find out who the killer is, she’ll have to get inside the clans. She enlists the help of a were named Rule, though she detests his species. Will her prejudices hold up under the heat of passion?

Thoughts

This is not really a prequel to the World of the Lupi series, it’s almost like a first draft of Tempting Danger. I still enjoyed reading it, although, I made sure that I read Tempting Danger first as a few of the twists are given away in Only Human.

There were a few plot holes in this short story – it seemed like one victim wasn’t accounted for and there were a few jumps in time that didn’t quite make sense. But, like I said, this short story feels more like a first draft than a final version of the story.

If you like completely immersing yourself within a series, this is worth reading, if you’re not as obsessive as I tend to be, it’s safe to give this a miss.

Synopsis

With her darkly seductive Psy-Changeling world, Nalini Singh has created a sensual, dangerous adventure that’s not to be missed. Now, as the deadly Psy Council tightens its grip, a rebel Psy scientist finds herself at the mercy of a changeling who has sworn vengeance against her kind…

Separated from her son and tasked to create a neural implant that will mean the effective enslavement of her psychically gifted race, Ashaya Aleine is the perfect Psy – calm, cool, emotionless… at least on the surface. Inside, she’s fighting a desperate battle to save her son and escape the vicious cold of the PsyNet. Yet when escape comes, it leads not to safety but to the lethal danger of a sniper’s embrace.

DarkRiver sniper Dorian Chistensen lost his sister to a Psy killer. Though he lacks the changeling ability to shift into animal form, his leopard lives within. And that leopard’s rage at the brutal loss is a clawing darkness that hungers for vengeance. Falling for a Psy has never been on Dorian’s agenda. But charged with protecting Ashaya and her son, he discovers that passion has a way of changing the rules…

Thoughts

Dorian’s stoic, supportive outlook and terrifyingly cold rage pulled me in from the first Psy-Changeling book. His loyalty to his Pack, and the outrageous pain that he felt at his sister’s loss create a stunning character, even when he is simply lurking at the periphery of other characters’ tales of love and loss. Which means that finally reading a story about the latent leopard and his mate was very rewarding, and I found the tale of Ashaya and Dorian impossible to put down.

Ashaya was one of the most intricately intense and confusing Psy characters which Singh has managed to create thus far. She is obviously driven by love for her son, hinted at in Mine to Possess, but she is hidden by layer upon layer of Silence and fear. Resulting in not an unemotional robot, as many of the Psy are shown to be, but in a woman who is steely and terrified, completely unsure of how to survive her new reality away from her people.

The potent mix of Ashaya’s fear and Dorian’s fury lead to a tale of twists and turns. Partnered with a sociopath and the slow revealing of more of the Psy Councils’ insidious plans and this is a story which has the power to draw you in and leave you in awe. After all, don’t we all want to be hostages to pleasure?

Synopsis

Nalini Singh pulls away another dark layer of sheer desire, revealing passions unknown, in her latest novel about the world of the Psy. A ghost returns from a leopard changeling’s past, making him question everything – even his base animal instincts…

Clay Bennett is a powerful DarkRiver sentinel, but he grew up in the slums with his human mother, never knowing his changeling father. As a young boy without the bonds of Pack he tried to stifle his animal nature. He failed… and committed the most extreme act of violence, killing a man and losing his best friend, Talin, in the bloody aftermath. Everything good in him died the day he was told that she, too, was dead.

Talin McKade barely survived a childhood drenched in bloodshed and terror. Now a new nightmare is stalking her life – the street children she works to protect are disappearing and turning up dead. Determined to keep them safe, she unlocks the darkest secret in her heat, and steels herself to ask the help of the strongest man she knows…

Clay lost Talin once. He will not let her go again, his hunger to possess her is a clawing need born of the leopard within. As they race to save the innocent, Clay and Talin must face the violent truths of their past, or risk losing everything that ever mattered.

Thoughts

This by far is my favourite Psy-Changeling book so far. The idea of loving someone since you were a child and never wanting to let them go is the epitome of soul mates and childhood sweethearts. Not something that I could ever truly conceive, but in the pages of a book, it is very sweet. Not to mention the sense of loyalty that jumps off the pages, and for me, loyalty and faith in one another are huge cornerstones in any good relationship.

Not to say that this love story was an easy journey – it was anything but. Singh likes to have her characters run the gauntlet in their pursuit of their mates, and it was no different for Clay and Tally. Forced to face their complex pasts while racing to save lost children, they are forced to come to terms with both who they are, and what they have done.

This is the first book in the Psy-Changeling series that ends on a bit more of a cliff-hanger, introducing characters that we will get to know much more intimately within the next novel, Hostage to Pleasure. As the series continues, the tantalising simplicity of the love stories becomes more heavily embroiled in a far greater battle between emotions and calculation, one that I, personally can’t wait to keep immersing myself within.
