Top 16 Books of 2016

2016 was a good year for me – I got to read a lot of books, both new and old. So here is a list of my favourite sixteen reads for this year.

falling-pomegranate-seeds16. Falling Pomegranate Seeds by Wendy J. Dunn
This is the first historical fiction that I have ever had the privilege of reading, and it has almost made me a convert. The topic is dense and heart-wrenching, but there is such a strength to the characters, that you can’t help but fall in love. The fact that Dunn used real historical figures to create her masterpiece of women’s rights, the relationships of mothers and daughters and a beautiful tale of coming of age just added to the poignancy of this tale.

skinwalker15. Skinwalker by Faith Hunter
I loved the new take on Native American skinwalkers in this story. The fact that it primarily focused on a woman of a minority culture was a great added bonus. To add to the great basis of fantasy, this story was dark and slightly twisted, but frankly honest about it’s chief protagonist – she was never painted as pure, but rather as a flawed human being.

Wickedly Powerful14. Wickedly Powerful by Deborah Blake
I found this series this year, and it completely changed my previously sceptical view on paranormal romance. Of the three books and five stories, this was by far my favourite. The lead Baba Yaga in this tale was far pricklier and more awkward around people than the others, and the love interest was a victim of mental illness – PTSD. This combined to create a beautiful love story with a potent message about PTSD that I cherished.

haunted13. Haunted by Kelley Armstrong
I love the Women of the Otherworld series – the heroines are not in any way, shape or form innocent and “good”. At least as books traditionally portray people. Instead they have their own challenges in life and difficulties. Eve Levine of Haunted has so far been my favourite of these characters. She is dead, but that doesn’t stop her from constantly attempting to help and guard her young daughter. This at the beginning of the story appears to be her only redeeming aspect, and as the story progresses, the true depth of her character is slowly revealed. It is a story that will make you fall in love with a flawed woman and this series again and again and again.

Raelia12. Raelia by Lynette Noni
A great sequel to the first Medoran Chronicles story, Raelia is all about the choices that we make. The storyline in this is so much more intense which is why I rated it slightly above the first book in the series, Akarnae. The ability of this story to capture my attention was immensely impressive, and I am constantly double checking what the release date for the next book in the series is.

The One11. The One by Kiera Cass
This story can make anyone believe in true love again. It is the sweetest, most charming love story I have ever read. Although, it doesn’t go over board with the sappy factor. The dystopian future setting helps to create a more fantastical and enhanced world than our own, which I thoroughly enjoyed and the creation of the caste system seriously made me question how I view and judge others. However, it is America and Maxon’s dance of romance that truly had me hooked and this story let me find out how their negotiation of love ended.

bad-blood10. Bad Blood by Lucienne Diver
I have an obsession with mythology, so any story or series that does a good job of recreating one of the ancient mythologies is going to get my attention. However, Diver’s approach to this was so completely unique that I was mesmerised from the first page. The sass and smart-mouthed attitude of the lead only added to my very quick falling for this series. As did her unique ancestry.

Kicking It9. Forked Tongues by Rachel Caine
This was one of the best short stories that I read this year – it combined fantasy with a strong woman and love. Not an easy combination to throw into less than one hundred pages. The image of a Cowboy Witch has stuck in my head since I read this months ago. A great, easy read to bunker down with for half hour or so.

body-double8. Body Double by Tess Gerritsen
The best crime book that I have read this year by far. Not only is it a tale of spine-tingling criminal acts, but it also investigates the nature versus nurture debates – one of my favourite intellectual discussions. Maura’s slow discovery of who she comes from and who she is highlights this, but it also reminds us that we are who we choose to be, not who other people want us to be. The strength of both Maura and Jane throughout the story is astonishing and admirable – it is so easy to imagine them walking around the streets of Boston.

night-shift7. Night Shift edited by Nalini Singh
A great way to find new authors and series is anthologies, which was partly why I bought this collection. I didn’t know that it would introduce me to one of my favourite series. Not one of these four short stories was even remotely tedious, and it was incredibly difficult to decide which author I wanted to read more of. The variety in the stories was enough that they were fascinating tales, but the underlying themes present in all of them still tied the anthology together nicely.

Queen of Shadows6. Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
The Throne of Glass series is such an epic tale of war, love, loss and inner strength, so any book in this series could make it onto this list. However, I loved Queen of Shadows the most because Aelin is able to truly embrace her future and role in life. She is also able to find someone who sees her for who she is and truly accept the fact. One battle in this series is finally over, but a much, much larger one is looming in the future.

black-wings5. Black Wings by Christina Henry
So much sass and blundering in this story, which is probably why I love it so much. There is something that I find so relatable about an uncoordinated heroine that makes me fall in love with a story – probably because I myself am more than a little accident prone. The use of old lore such as Gremlins and Fallen Angels was also a unique spin on a tale of paranormal fantasy.

lirael4. Lirael by Garth Nix
I have always felt insanely connected to the character of Lirael in Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series. She doesn’t quite belong with the people she calls family, and is always an outcast. Even after she finds her true calling in life, she walks a lonely path and isn’t quite able to relate to her peers. Yet, for all of that, I don’t think that her story is a sad one, rather one about finding out who you are and how you fit in the world. And realising that not everyone is going to fit in with others very well.

on-the-prowl3. Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs
I have been in love with Patricia Briggs for a long time now, but there is something about the novella Alpha and Omega that holds my attention every single time. Anna and Charles truly have love and first sight, but it has such a great twist to it. Add to that the fact that they both have some pretty serious inner demons, and it is a really sweet tale of overcoming the odds and finding that perfect fit in your life. Even if it is the last fit that you would expect.

magic-breaks2. Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews
It was so incredibly difficult to choose a favourite story in the Kate Daniels series. I’ve loved every single tale and would check the post office religiously when a new book was going to be delivered. However, I think that this is a good selection. Kate and Curran are not only battling for the children of their people, but they are also being forced to deal with the challenges of a new relationship. I got so emotionally invested in this story that I actually threw it across the room whenever it bothered me.

mine-to-possess1. Mine to Possess by Nalini Singh
Tales of paranormal romance are a new genre to me, and this series is a GREAT introduction. Like the Kate Daniels series, it was incredibly hard to find a favourite, but ultimately, this is the book that I found the sweetest and continue to think about. Aside from the rest of the developing Psy-Changeling drama, the story of Clay and Tally is what a lot of people dream of. Finding that one person in childhood who will always be yours – someone who is able to always understand you on an entirely different level.

So there you have it, my favourite stories from my reading list for 2016. I can’t wait to find some more great tales in the new year!

5th sentence, 74th page: Throwing his bottle of water toward Riaz, Elias reached back to grab Sakura, hauling her up into his arms.

Synopsis

Discover the exhilarating risks of passion in the breathtaking new Psy-Changeling novel by Nalini Singh.

Adria, wolf changeling and resilient soldier, has made a break with the past. Now comes a new territory, and a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer lieutenant already sworn to someone else.

For Riaz, the primal attraction he feels for Adria is a staggering betrayal. For Adria, his dangerous lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It consumes her. It terrifies her. It threatens to undermine everything she has built of her new life. But fighting their wild compulsion toward one another proves a losing battle.

Their coming together is an inferno… and a melding of two wounded souls who promise each other no commitment, no ties, no bonds. Only pleasure. Too late, they realise that they have more to lose than they ever imagined. Drawn into a cataclysmic Psy war that may alter the fate of the world itself, they must make a decision that might just break them both.

Thoughts

The storylines in the Psy-Changeling world just keep getting more and more complex. The fact that they do is not only a testimony to Singh’s ability to expand on her universe, whilst maintaining unique romance stories. After reading eleven books in the same series, all with their own, unique romantic partners, I was expecting to begin to feel same same about the storylines. It is hard to have a series with such a common thread have enough variety to keep one enthralled. Especially when it is not focused on one, single character’s development.

The idea of Riaz and Adria was a unique one in that Riaz was already mated, so it was difficult to see how these two could have a successful romance. However, as I just mentioned, Singh managed to find a new spin on an old theme and tell it in a way that shocked and surprised me. The choices that both characters made weren’t exactly what I envisaged, and the journey was an indescribably suspenseful one.

Sienna and Hawke are frequently visited in Tangle of Need, their roles as the alpha pair of one of the most powerful changeling groups in the world necessitating such an inclusion. However, the transition throughout the series from a tale focused on one couple with the appearance of others, to a story of full-blown war with a constantly present cast of characters has been a slow and steady one. This change in the theme and format of the stories helps to highlight the greater theme of the series, and make sure that readers fall in love with Singh’s Psy-Changeling novels again and again and again.

5th sentence, 74th page: Looking into Marlee’s room, he saw her sprawled out in her sleep, her arms and legs thrown every which way.

Synopsis

The SnowDancer healer Lara discovers the searing joys – and the unexpected challenges – of being mated to the quiet, powerful Walker, a man used to keeping his silence.

Thoughts

Although Walker and Lara’s romance begins, and is even cemented, in Kiss of Snow, it is nice that they get their own short story. It is a poignant reminder that, in spite of their mating, in spite of finding someone that you will spend the rest of your life with, relationships still require work.

Lara’s willingness to adopt Walker’s children, his family as her own is a kind, caring act that doesn’t necessarily occur so seamlessly in most people’s lives. Their desire to create a family of their own, and provide a caring environment that is open to everyone is one of the most admirable traits of all of Singh’s characters. At least, in my opinion – unconditionally accepting anyone and everyone into your life just because they need the comfort is an amazing trait that more people should have.

Walker’s slowly unfolding tale and recounts of the past finally help the last pieces of the puzzle that is the Laurens fall into place. It is also a great illustration of the very far reaching, and horrific impacts of Silence. And the creation of the Arrows, something that is becoming more and more important as increasingly more characters come to play in the Psy-Changeling war.

5th sentence, 74th page: Warm and curvy and muscled in a supple feminine way, she’d surprised him with the softness of her.

Synopsis

Since the moment of their defection from the Psynet and into the SnowDancer wolf pack, Sienna Lauren has had one weakness. Hawke. A dangerous Alpha, the response he draws from her could almost compel her to madness.

Hawke is used to walking alone, having lost the woman who would’ve been his mate. But Sienna fascinates the primal heart of him, even as he tells himself she is far too young to handle the wild fury of the wolf.

Then Sienna changes the rules and, suddenly, there is no more distance, only the most intimate of battles between two people who were never meant to meet. Yet as they strip away each other’s secrets in a storm of raw emotion, they must also ready themselves for a far more vicious fight.

A deadly enemy is out to destroy the SnowDancer pack, striking at everything they hold dear, but it is Sienna’s darkest secret that may yet savage the pack that is her home… and the alpha who is its heartbeat…

Thoughts

I have been waiting and waiting for the story of Sienna and Hawke since first meeting Hawke in Slave to Sensation. The slow filtering of information about their mutual attraction throughout the past nine books, just increased my need, no, my desire to find out how their story progressed. Add to that the fact that Kiss of Snow has the first real incursion by the Psy into SnowDancer territory, and this whole book was absolutely impossible to put down.

Sienna’s immense power and abilities have been hinted at throughout the stories, but the actual meaning of the X designation and the danger of this are finally explained beautifully. This, combined with Sienna’s power and the true reason behind the Laurens’ flight from the PsyNet illustrated a beautiful young woman who is beginning to grow into her powers. It is this ability and sense of growing that not only finally brings her story to the limelight, but also makes Hawke acknowledge what everyone else has long known – that the two highly volatile characters are made for each other.

Unlike the other Psy-Changeling stories, there were two tales of romance and mating throughout Kiss of Snow. Walker and Lara were a completely unexpected match, but one that somehow made complete and total sense. Their caring natures and unquenchable desire to nurture the young not only balances out the vivid fire and aggression of Sienna and Hawke’s romance, but also the costs that the beginnings of war have upon the Pack.

5th sentence, 74th page: I gave him a couple of days off so he could go to his father’s birthday party in L.A.

Synopsis

Grace, a shy submissive wolf, finds herself pursued by the last man she ever would have imagined: a SnowDancer lieutenant who intrigues her.. and has a reputation of being ‘mad, bad, and dangerous to know’.

Thoughts

This is a great little side-story in the greater brewing war of the Psy-Changeling world. It doesn’t further the overarching story and there isn’t a great point of contention within the story, rather, it is simply a tale of two characters courting and finding acceptance in one another. Which was so thoroughly enjoyable to read.

The idea of one of the most submissive wolves in the pack falling for one of the most terrifyingly dominant hasn’t really been explored throughout the Psy-Changeling stories thus far. Most of the women that the supremely dominant males choose are dominant themselves, in one form or another. Even the Psy, trained not to feel give back with zest. Grace’s total submissiveness draws an entirely new dynamic into the courtship between herself and Cooper than previously seen. With a new dynamic, there comes new obstacles for the couple to overcome. Something that didn’t allow me to put my book down until I had read every single page of the novella.

Synopsis

Centers on David Christiansen, who was briefly mentioned in Moon Called. It’s a heartwarming story of how murder and deception can bring a family together.

Thoughts

For me, Christmas is all about family and love. It is about gathering together and being grateful for each other’s’ presence in our lives and hearts. And there are a lot of Christmas tales out there that focus on this, there are also a lot who focus upon the Christian understandings of this celebration. Briggs’ Christmas tale focuses on the aspects of Christmas that I love the most – love, family and reconciliation.

David Christiansen is a bit of a sad character in Moon Called – he was changed in the worst circumstances, and struggles constantly to accept his new place in life. The horror of his past constantly taints his future, and, through the incredible short story, The Star of David, you discover that he has lost not only his humanity, but also a part of his family. The resonating loss in Devonte’s position as a foster child in hospital at Christmas drives home the pain of this and the need of everyone to be constantly be surrounded by people who love and cherish you.

The spirit of Christmas hovers over the whole story, and the final, closing scene is a beautiful way in which to highlight the uplifting and beautiful message within this story. A great short story to read over this Christmas break, something that will make you happy and hopeful as you navigate the most hectic time of year.

Synopsis

Werewolves can be dangerous if you get in their way, but they’ll leave you alone if you are careful. They are very good at hiding their natures from the human population, but I’m not human. I know them when I meet them, and they know me, too.

Mercy Thompson’s sexy next-door neighbour is a werewolf.

She’s tinkering with a VW bus at her mechanic shop that happens to belong to a vampire.

But then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself… and her connection to the world of things that go bump in the night is about to get her into a whole lot of trouble.

Thoughts

Mercedes Thompson is one of my all-time, all-time favourite literary characters. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read Moon Called since I first bought it – it’s a great book to pick up when I don’t know what to read and every time I pick it up, I discover a new aspect of the story that I had previously missed. Mercy is a great mix of intrinsic toughness and independence, with a caring and compassionate centre.

The amount of detail that Briggs puts into her storyline and world is amazing. Mercy’s unique voice and way of explaining the world of werewolves slowly unfolds the complex social rituals of another species. The sass with which this information is delivered adds to the amusement and delight of this new world. The gradual unfolding of the world of werewolves alongside the greater story of death, mayhem and conspiracies was a great technique to impart a lot of knowledge without completely overloading my brain.

There are a lot of vampire and werewolf books out there these days – the literary world of paranormal fantasy and romance seems to have seriously expanded recently. So, finding a really independent voice and unique character is rare. So is finding a series that portrays vampires and werewolves as dangerous predators worthy of respect, instead of romanticised, misunderstood creatures.

5th sentence, 74th page: And that, Indigo thought, was even more of a problem than the control issues of the dominant males.

Synopsis

Passion and reason collide with explosive force in the newest instalment of Nalini Singh’s mesmerising Psy-Changeling series. As a conflict with Pure Psy looms on the horizon, two powerful wolves fight a far more intimate war of their own…

In his role as a tracker for the SnowDancer pack, it’s up to Drew Kincaid to rein in rogue changelings who have lost control of their animal halves – even if it means killing those who have gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite… and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

Lieutenant Indigo Riviere doesn’t easily allow skin privileges, especially not those of the sensual kind – and the last person she expects to find herself craving is the most wickedly playful male in the den. Everything she knows tells her to pull back before the flames burn them both to ash… but she hasn’t counted on Drew’s determination to win her.

Now, two of SnowDancer’s most stubborn wolves find themselves playing a hot, sexy courtship game even as lethal danger stalks the very place they call home…

Thoughts

One of the things that I have really loved about Singh’s stories and writing is the inner strength of both of her characters – both male and female. Although often the males are incredibly possessive and protective, the women tend to match them, and sometimes even out do them in their own protective possessiveness. And Indigo is no different, in fact, the ability of a more dominant female to mate with a male was an incredibly intriguing and enjoyable way in which to alter the stereotypes that I am so used to being exposed to in the modern world.

I have read some reviews on Play of Passion that tote Indigo to be an incredibly haughty and selfish character, the only bad reviews that I have read of the Psy-Changeling books. However, I didn’t find this at all. Indigo’s inability to become vulnerable and her constant freezing out of Drew struck me as entirely understandable and reliable reactions to her surrounds. Her rigidity and inability to compromise, whilst a little frustrating, perfectly balance out Drew’s kind hearted and joking nature – sometimes, when opposites attract, it works out very, very well.

Although this book still focuses on the mating of a couple, the furthering of the war and friction within the Psy was a really important part of the story. Henry Scott and Pure Psy have slowly been becoming more and more intense in the threat department. And in Play of Passion, they become truly insipid. I can’t wait to see how their constant assault on those who aren’t a pure part of Silence continues to unfold in this fascinating series.

Synopsis

Return to the powerful, turbulent Psy-Changeling world created by the amazingly talented Nalini Singh, as a human detective finds himself working the most unlikely of cases – one played out in the dark heart of a councilor’s domain…

Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy-dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councilor’s closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental fracture…

Sophia Russo is a Justice-Psy, cursed with the ability to retrieve memories from men and women so twisted even veteran cops keep their distance. Appointed as Max’s liaison with the Psy, she finds herself fascinated by this human, her frozen heart threatening to thaw with forbidden emotion. But, her mind filled with other people’s nightmares, other people’s evil, she’s standing on the border between sanity and a silken darkness that urges her to take justice into her own hand, to become judge, jury… and executioner….

Thoughts

I love the idea of cops bent on justice – those who feel that the victims deserve justice, and ignore the politics that can sometimes stop this from happening. Max’s integrity and desire to chase down the truth in spite of his lack of political acumen shone from the pages of Mine to Possess. The expansion on this character and his drive to find the truth was a great theme throughout this novel, as was the backstory to his past and motivations.

The J Psy are briefly mentioned in some of the past Psy-Changeling novels. It is tantalising enough that it made me curious, but no true information was given. Meeting Sophia in Bonds of Justice completely changed that. The inner workings of the PsyNet and the wrongs of Silence were highlighted. Her scarred past help to make these wrongs even more horrifying, and the looming horror of her future really drives home the total tyranny of such a system.

Although there was still the continuous ‘us vs. them’ feel to Bonds of Justice, the unity between two members of opposing sides (the Psy and the non-Psy) was what really struck me in this story. Sophia and Max’s romance aside, their ability to form a working partnership and find common ground from naturally opposing sides was enthralling. Fighting crime has always seemed such a noble, if not fundamentally terrifying pursuit, and it fitted these two distinctly different personalities beautifully.

Synopsis

Nalini Singh returns to the Psy-Changeling world and its breathtaking blend of passion, adventure and the paranormal, as a woman without a past becomes the pawn of a man who controls her future…

Dev Santos discovered Katya unconscious and battered, with no memory of who she is. All Katya can tell him is that she’s dangerous. Charged with protecting his people’s most vulnerable secrets, Dev is duty-bound to eliminate any and all threats against them. It’s a task he’s never hesitated to complete… until now, when he finds himself drawn to a woman who could prove to be the enemy’s most insidious weapon yet.

Stripped of her memories by a shadowy oppressor and programmed to carry out cold-blooded murder Katya Haas is fighting desperately for her very sanity. Dev is her only hope. But how can she expect to gain the trust ofa  man who could very well be her next target? For, in this game, someone is going to die…

Thoughts

It took me a little longer to get full immersed in this story – there was little contact with changelings, and it was of a very different pace and tone to the preceding six books. However, when I did finally fall in love with Dev and Katya, as I have with every other Psy-Changeling couple, I fell hard. Hard enough to weep at moments throughout the story.

Blaze of Memory starts to tell the story of the Forgotten, those who abandoned the Silence at its instigation. Dev’s devotion to and suffering because of his position as one of these renegade Psy almost echoes that of the Psy from generations ago – before the implication of Silence. Although the Psy are often painted as the ‘bad guys’ throughout the Psy-Changeling series, seeing the decision to remove emotion from the point of view of those who are now going through the same thing is a great way to create sympathy for the ‘bad guys’. Things are never black and white, and Singh illustrates this beautifully with Dev’s plight and the story of his fellows.

Contrastingly, Katya’s torture and loss of identity was the direct effect of total Silence – a lack of conscience and compassion. The brutality of her story and memories, which slowly unfold are a stark contrast to the emotions and love which flows around the Forgotten. It is Katya’s story that brought tears to my eyes and her ability to find an inner strength that makes the journey all the more meaningful.
