Synopsis

She never expected to marry

Annabel was about to take the veil to become a nun, when her mother suddenly arrived at the abbey to take her home… so that she can marry the Scottish laird who is betrothed to her runaway sister! She knows nothing about being a wife, nothing about how to run a household, and definitely nothing about the marriage bed.

He never expected to fall in love

From the moment Ross MacKay sets eyes on Annabel, he is taken with his shy, sweet bride… and the fact that she’s blessed with lush curves only makes him utter his own prayers of thanks. But when an enemy endangers her life, he’ll move the Highlands themselves to save her. For though Annabel’s not the bride he planned for, she’s the only woman he desires…

Thoughts

This was my first full-length Lynsay Sands novel. I’ve now read a few of her novellas which were absolutely brilliant. Plus, I’ve been a little obsessed with historical fiction in the last month or so, so it was kind of a perfect fit. Which is quite obvious, since I read the whole thing cover to cover in one night. It only has a different start and finish date because I read it overnight when I should have been sleeping… should probably stop doing that.

There is something that seriously draws me into Scottish romance. Yet, like Lynsay Sands, this is my first ever full length Scottish romance. I’m probably so incredibly drawn in because my ancestors were Scottish. Finally something I connect to a little more strongly. Having said that, I have never been to Scotland, and most likely never will. This story just reminded me how much I want to discover more about my past. How much I love stories like this. They’re easy, cute and give me a weird hereditary nostalgia.

Although this story was primarily about the love between Annabel and Ross, it was also very much about discovering who was stalking her. Normally in stories like this, it’s kind of obvious, or even known by the characters. And the tale is more about getting revenge and escaping the evil creature. Not so much in this. I honestly had no idea who was the culprit, and, more importantly, why they were trying to kidnap the English bride. It made an interesting point of conflict. And not one that I often find in romances.

Normally in romances, the central point of conflict comes from some misunderstanding in the relationship. I thought the whole nun thing would be a point of contention and that would definitely show itself in the sexual relations. Not so. The main issue for the leads in this was the stalker. I loved that there was an external point of conflict and that neither character was unbelievably stupid. It’s great in stories, but a departure from this trend is also brilliant.

Synopsis

She thought her date was out of this world. Acutally, he was not of this world…

We’ve all been on bad dates, dreadful experiences that turned out to be uniquely memorable in the very worst way. But at least our partners for these detestable evenings were more or less… human!

Now Kim Harrison, Lynsay Sands, Kelley Armstrong, and Lori Handeland – four of the very best writers currently exploring the dangerous seduction of the supernatural – offer up dating disasters (and unexpected delights) of a completely different sort: dark, wicked, paranormally sensual assignations with werewolves, demon lovers, and the romantically challenged undead. Sexy, witty, chilling, and altogether remarkable, here is proof positive that some love matches are made someplace other than heaven.

Thoughts

Normally I love collections like this because you can read one novella, finish it, put it down and walk away. I did manage to do this… but it was quite a bit more difficult than I had anticipated. I had already read something by every one of these authors, and so I knew that what was just around the corner was going to be fantastic. And it was this knowledge that made it nigh on impossible to stop thinking about this storyline.

There is something about stories of horrible dates that I kind of love. Not because I’ve ever been on one (I met my other half when I was seventeen and have been stupid in love since). But I can imagine the horrors of what pretty much everyone must go through. It’s a way to live vicariously through something. Adding in the extra aspect of fantasy and the supernatural just made it all the more fun. And a little bit more alien than even a first date is to me.

Anybody who loves paranormal fantasy or romance is going to love this collection of novellas. If you also enjoy heroines who are strong and independent and more than likely to get themselves into trouble… then this is even more likely to make you deliriously happy. Like it did me… now I need another collection like this to while the nights away…

Synopsis

Claire, new shapeshifter, accepts dates for school reunion with crush Kyle and his sister Jill.

Thoughts

It only took me two pages to recognise something in this novella that links the story to Run, Rudolph, Run. Partly it was the mention of Jill, but mostly it was the creepy man zapping an unsuspecting woman with a ray and turning her into a shapeshifter… it’s basically what happens to Jill. Just five years later than the activities in this novella.

I love the romance and the cuteness of this novella. It’s ultimately about a couple who have been in love since high school, but unable or unwilling to do much about it. And then, when they finally decide to take that first step, supernatural complications get in the way to make things a lot more difficult…and a whole lot more fun.

What I loved most about this tale was the fact that it was not just about the romance, but also the high school reunion. My ten year reunion is due to happen next year, and I honestly don’t know if I want to go. I just didn’t like high school. But reading about one in which everything ends on a positive and karma seems to take part in the activities… it makes me wonder whether it might be worth going, even if I can’t shapeshift…

Synopsis

This holiday, spend quality time with family and loved ones—living and dead . . .

There’s no place like home for the horrordays—unless you’d prefer a romantic midnight walk through a ghost-infested graveyard . . . or a haunted house candlelight dinner with the sexy vampire of your dreams. The (black) magical season is here—and whether it’s a solstice séance gone demonically wrong with the incomparable Kim Harrison, a grossly misshapen Christmas with the remarkable Lynsay Sands, a blood-chilling-and-spilling New Year’s with the wonderful Marjorie M. Liu, or a super-powered Thanksgiving with the phenomenal Vicki Pettersson, one thing is for certain: in the able hands of these exceptional dark side explorers, the holidays are going to be deliciously hellish!

Thoughts

I was expecting a far more intense Christmas-theme throughout this collection of four novellas. Although all four are set within the holiday season, one of the stories heavily themes Thanksgiving, another the Chinese New Year. So, although not completely about Christmas, the holiday themes that I was expecting were still there, playing a great backdrop against the urban fantasy battles and tales that unfold across the pages.

Compared to the rest of the holiday collections I’ve been reading recently, Holidays Are Hell has a much darker spin on the holidays. The stories that take up this collection aren’t completely dark and twisty, but they’re not light, shining and hopeful. Kind of a bit more realistic about the joys of Christmas as I’ve felt them for the last few years…

Synopsis

Jill’s brother and sister are shapeshifters and incredibly intelligent scientists. But she’s normal, until a madman decides to mess with her on the day of the Christmas pageant. Between running from an insane person, falling for Nick, and trying to learn all about her new skills, Jill is in for an interesting holiday season…

Thoughts

I laughed through most of this story. It was just one of those slightly humorous, feel good, easy reads that sweep you along. In fact, it swept me along so well that the “I’ll just read a chapter” thing went straight out the window and I read this entire novella in one sitting. Always a good indication of how much I enjoyed the storyline.

Jill gets zapped by some weird molecular destabiliser, finds out that there’s a mad man after her, and runs away. At first I couldn’t really tell where this story was going. She gets zapped, there’s a mad man and a love interest (you’d think I would have picked up on some of the storyline earlier). But it pretty quickly becomes a fun, intense journey that feels like a constant game of cat and mouse.

Although I enjoyed the chase in the story, my favourite part was the romance. Nick and Jill have this amazing simmering passion. But beyond the sexual tension, there is this great emotional connection and relationship. The fact that it starts to take place on a Christmas float, and at some point, a reindeer running rampant, just helps to add a little more flavour and laughter to the random adventures that help to increase the power of the relationship throughout this Christmas story.
