Tying Up Loose Ends

For me, January was mostly about tying up loose ends. I start my PhD in a month or so, and I wanted to have everything with the house pretty much done by that point. Or at least, the majority of what I can currently do… it’s a house, there is ALWAYS something to be done with it…

But, this need to tie up loose ends has extended beyond that. I’ve tried to finish series that I have started and not finished (both book and TV), tried to unpack everything that I have lying around the house, and get the entire place just a little tidier. Once I start studying again, I will be unable to spend so much time on the such, so it is nice to feel like I have finally started to succeed with something.

It really doesn’t help that I am the kind of person who jumps from project to project. I hate being bored, and that makes me jump from fascination to fascination as the need arises. Maybe I should try to be a little more focused in, well, everything that I can do… but honestly, I kind of love the way my jumpy little mind works, and it is great to know that sometimes I get into the mood to just tie up loose ends.

DELTORA IS A LAND OF MONSTERS AND MAGIC…

Lief, Barda and Jasmine, searching for the seven lost gems of the magic Belt of Deltora have almost reached their goal. Six gems now gleam in the Belt, but the last must be found before Deltora can be freed from the tyranny of the evil Shadow Lord.

The companions have faced many terrors with strength and courage. Now they are about to meet dark mysteries that strength and courage alone cannot defeat. If they fail, their quest will be lost, and they will remain forever trapped in the swirling mists of the Valley of the Lost.

Thoughts

This might be the last gem for the belt of Deltora, but it is definitely not the last step on the journey. The gems may all get restored to the belt, but they still need the heir, and Lief is so very aware of this as they travel towards the Valley of the Lost. But, like the rest of the gems, it is not just a simple means of finding where the gem is hidden – they have to battle the guardian to win it. Just, in this case, the battle is one of wits that the trio can’t afford to lose.

Del’s sister city, Tora is first mentioned in The Maze of the Beast, but it isn’t until the trio travel to the Valley that they truly discover what happened to its people. The scars that the Shadow Lord’s take over have left on the countryside are shown, and the negligence of the royals over generations have huge impacts. Lief, Barda and Jasmine may have begun to heal some of the scars of the past, but there is still a lot of work to do.

The Shadow Lord may have many plots and plans, and the trio manage to uncover yet another deceptive manipulation in their journey to the valley. It makes you wonder and fear for what will be in store in the future – what manipulations are still left in place, and the ways in which the Shadow Lord will prevent the three from finding the heir and saving Deltora.

DELTORA IS A LAND OF MONSTERS AND MAGIC…

The evil Shadow Lord has become aware that Lief, Barda and Jasmine are searching for the seven lost gems of the magic Belt of Deltora. He knows that if the gems can be restored to the Belt its power will threaten his tyranny.

Five gems have already been found. The next stone lies hidden in the underwater lair of the hideous and ferocious Glus. Already exhausted, pursued by the servants of the Shadow Lord, the three companions will need all their strength and courage to face the Maze of the Beast.

Thoughts

The next step on Lief, Barda and Jasmine’s journey is filled with even more danger, yet again. Not only does it feel like the stakes have been raised, but the enemy’s awareness of their actions have also increased. Not only do the trio constantly face the dangers of recognition, but they similarly need to face the dangers of the maze of the beast. Not only do they not know where the maze is, but they also have no idea how to get there and avoid the dangers of the Ols and constant interaction with more people.

There might be an increased danger of being recognised and caught, but the trio fortunately crosses paths with old faces. Dain and Doom are both shrouded in mystery, and although they have both saved the heroes at one point or another, there is still a sense of mistrust there. Yet, they are important to the journey and, possibly, at finally overthrowing the evil Shadow Lord’s tyranny.

I love that although every gem throughout this series is very much stumbled upon, it is the one in the Maze of the Beast which is almost tripped over. They are literally thrown at it, and the understanding of fate and their place in the saving of the realm of Deltora is highlighted.

Synopsis

In the beginning there was… a turtle.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place which might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules.

But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries and, well, Death, is a spectacularly inept wizard…

Thoughts

I have had The Colour of Magic in my bookshelf since Terry Pratchett passed away. After all, I wanted to see what all of the hype was about. As usual though, I was a little delayed with opening the actual book. However, I really wasn’t disappointed. This story was funny, entertaining and cute. It was incredibly fun and easy to read, and I was really sad when it was all over.

Rincewind’s journey through Discworld with Twoflower is a calamity of mistakes that just steadily gets worse and worse. Anything that can go wrong does, and although in most stories, I would just find this predictable, irritating and cringe-worthy – in Pratchett’s world, it’s just funny. Partly it feels like he’s just making fun at the more serious versions of fantasy and scifi novels. But, there’s also this ability for the storyline to completely suck you in. For me, a good book is one that you just can’t put down. And that was the case with The Colour of Magic.

Although I loved this book, there were no specific moments that jumped out at me. I remember the rough plotline, I remember the feeling of reading the book. But not so much the exact plotline. Nor, the poignant message in the words that I get in some storylines. But, that’s probably what I loved about this. It’s a happy go lucky, easy storyline. Something that I will be able to read again and again and enjoy each and every time.

This has been a great start to the year. I said goodbye to some of the series I loved (by finishing them). Got accepted into a PhD and just generally started the new year with a bang (and, surprisingly, no hangover…)

Synopsis

In this companion novella to The Girl with the Iron Touch, American cowboy Jasper Renn finds himself in a situation his lightning-fast skills cannot rescue him from…

After surviving a triumph-turned-tragedy in New York City, Jasper is determined to secure a happier future with his gifted band of friends. So when the group’s mechanical genius Emily is abducted, he’ll plunge into England’s darkest places to rescue her…

But his old flame Wildcat is turning London twon upside down to find her missing sister, and Jasper finds the attraction between himself and the fierce beauty as tempting and dangerous as ever. Their trail leads deep into the city’s most unusual circus. Soon, Jasper will find his loyalties – and future – tested more than he could ever imagine…

Thoughts

I kind of love the idea of an American cowboy in steampunk England. It gives the storyline a little more flavour, but mostly I think that the idea of Jasper just sounds kind of cute. He’s sweet, a bit of a charmer, and I can imagine his swagger as he waltzes around with a cowboy hat on. It helps that Cross’ vivid descriptions create a world where it is easy to imagine Renn running around the streets of London (literally).

When Cat makes another appearance in The Girl with the Iron Touch, I was admittedly excited. I love when my favourite characters find themselves a perfect significant other. And Cat seemed kind of perfect for Jasper, plus a fairly enthralling character that I want to discover more about. Having a novella that actually investigates this woman (and her relationship with Jasper) further, just completely made my day.

Synopsis

In 1897 London, something not quite human is about to awaken.

When mechanical genius Emily is kidnapped by rogue automatons, Finley Jayne and her fellow misfits fear the worst. What’s left of their archenemy, The Machinist, hungers to be resurrected, and Emily must transplant his consciousness into one of his automatons – or forfeit her friends’ lives.

With Griffin being mysteriously tormented by the Aether, Finley turns to Jack Dandy, but trusting the master criminal is as dangerous as controlling her dark side. Meanwhile, Sam is searching everywhere for Emily. He would walk into hell for her, but the choice she must make will test them more than they could imagine.

To save those she cares about, Emily must confront The Machinist’s ultimate creation – an automaton more human than machine. And if she’s to have any chance at triumphing, she must summon a strength even she doesn’t know she has…

Thoughts

The more I read of this series, the more I love it, and the harder I find to put it down. Emily, Finley and the rest of the gang journey onwards in their battle to find their place in the world and seek justice. Yet, The Machinist’s legacy still haunts them, and it forces Emily to face up to her inner terrors and strengths. Some of Emily’s past has been alluded to in the preceding books, but it’s not until The Girl with the Iron Touch that it truly comes to light. Along with her immense capacity for love and strength.

Not only is there a lot of personal growth in the characters throughout this series, but there’s also great relationship developments. Emily and Sam have a great connection, but the depth of their love for one another isn’t really explored until this novel – it divulges far more of their thoughts and dedication. Finley and Griffin too find a way to progress in their relationship, even though there are still secrets and many layers of confusion between the two of them. There are even hints of a future love interest for Jasper in the presence of the Wildcat. It’s a little bit of a cliché, but also kind of nice that it seems as though each of the main characters have paired up. Or are about to…

Mixing a vivid, beautiful world with the battle of good versus evil, the supernatural talents of the characters and the technology of steampunk all jumps off the page. It not only makes it impossible to put down this story, but it helps to make an already thoroughly enjoyable storyline all the better. After all, it’s not everyday that you find a story that has great fashion, great characters, great settings and a great storyline.

Hot and Sweaty

Lately it’s been disgustingly hot. Which normally would be fine. Because I prefer heat to cold… But I don’t have an air conditioner. And the one at work is broken… so for the last few days and nights I’ve been ridiculously uncomfortable.

We’re trying to get an air con instead soon. But, as with everything it takes time… and comparing of quotes… and basically I hate adulting… why can’t things happen with the snap of my fingers?

Even now I’m writing this on my phone (so sorry for typos). There’s a hundred things I want to do, but 0 motivation to actually move away from the fan…

Synopsis

Before he makes his appearance in The Girl with the Iron Touch, Jack Dandy had an adventure of his own. Learn how his actions set the plot in motion in The Dark Discovery of Jack Dandy, a short teaser story from author Kady Cross’s Steampunk Chronicles.

Jack Dandy didn’t become prince of the London underworld at barely twenty-one by being softhearted, even if a certain girl in a steel corset has wormed her way into his affections of late. He knows how to manipulate, charm and rob people blind. And if his criminal activities embarrass his aristocratic father, so much the better.

So, when a friend of Jack’s father hires him for an underhanded job, Jack is happy to oblige – for an outrageous fee, of course. Delivering a mysterious crate seems like an easy task – until Jack realizes just what is inside…

Thoughts

Jack Dandy fascinates me. He is the stereotypical ‘bad guy’, wearing black, acting charming, but running a cut throat (literally) business. Yet, there is obviously some kind of relationship with Finley throughout the rest of the Steampunk Chronicles books. Reading a novella that not only thinks about this relationship from Jack’s point of view, but also opens up the storyline for the next novel was incredibly enjoyable.

Jack’s heritage and history are finally brought to light in this great novella. Even the reasons for his almost courtship of Finley, and his work with the criminal underworld are shown. His petty attempt at revenge and strike back at the class system of 1800’s England help to further create a multi-dimensional image of this complex character.

I really enjoyed not only the short journey that Jack goes on throughout this story, but how Cross is able to build up on one of her secondary characters throughout it. Now I just can’t wait to delve into The Girl with the Iron Touch.

Synopsis

In 1897, New York City, life has never been more thrilling or dangerous. What happens when someone you love becomes a weapon to use against you…

Thoughts

I loved the contrast between the setting of this and The Girl in the Steel Corset. New York and England, both set in the 1800s, and filled with the beautiful imagery of the steampunk world. Finley’s ability to navigate this world is put to the test as not only her relationship with Griffin changes and evolves, but she struggles to understand more of Jasper’s convoluted history.

The past is something that we can never run from. Not only does it shape us, but it also haunts us in the worst possible moments. Jasper is forced to face up to this as the gang of misfits struggle to free him and clear his name. Yet, it is the woman who he loves that holds the key to his past (and possible future) more than anyone else. The girl who wears the clockwork collar is beguiling and somehow slightly off throughout this entire tale – most of the story, I thought that it was just because I prefer Finley and Emily, but, towards the end, I discovered that it was something more. There isn’t just Jasper’s continuous feeling of guilt, but that lingering feeling that things aren’t quite right definitely held true. You’ll just have to find out how by reading this amazing story yourself!

The stakes are slowly raised for Griffin as well. Not just in admitting what his feelings for Finley are, but also in understanding his own strengths, and weaknesses. In a time where men are supposed to be the protectors, his physical in capabilities constantly haunt him. But, it’s his ability to control the raw power of the aether which makes him such a potent enemy. Something that comes in handy towards the finale. And something that might be incredibly important in future stories, as it seems the Machinist isn’t quite finished with them…
