Synopsis

How much is your life worth?

In the territory of Ixia control is maintained through the Code of Behaviour forbidding the practice of magic, but danger lurks in mysterious places…

Imprisoned for murder, Yelena Zaltana’s punishment is death, unless she accepts the position of the Commander of Ixia’s food taster… and risks assassination from poison daily.

In a world where magic equals death and freedom is for the lucky few, the battle for Yelena’s life has just begun.

Thoughts

This was one of those random, second hand, impulse buys. I had no idea what to expect. I had never heard of it. And, man, am I glad that I picked this up. It was a great story, but not so grab you by the throat that I forgot about everything else around me. There was a wonderful, strong heroine. An engaging world and storyline. And even a bit of a love story thrown in. I’ve found a new series and author to obsess over!

This is a weirdly medieval dystopian future setting. It’s this great idea of a world in harmony – everyone has a chance, a place and a position. Murder doesn’t occur because there is a strong sense of an eye for an eye (you murder, and you get executed). And there is a strong, independent leader in front. Yet, it’s so obviously flawed. Yelena is on death row for defending herself. She then gets to become a poison taster (someone in the line of assassination) and is thrown into a world of subterfuge. This weird juxtaposition between the great ideals, and the reality of what happens highlights that everything is not always as it seems. And that Yelena might be finding herself in a lot more trouble than she ever could have predicted.

I both liked and disliked the ending of this. Without giving away any spoilers, it is a great lead into the next tale. But I also didn’t like the way that Yelena’s relationships were placed throughout this tale. But, really, it works well because now I can’t wait to read Magic Study and find out how she goes in the next step on her journey of self-discovery.

Synopsis

It was late in November 1456. The snow fell over Paris with rigorous, relentless persistence; sometimes the wind made a sally and scattered it in flying vortices; sometimes there was a lull, and flake after flake descended out of the black night air, silent, circuitous, interminable. To poor people, looking up under moist eyebrows, it seemed a wonder where it all came from. Master Francis Villon had propounded an alternative that afternoon, at a tavern window: was it only Pagan Jupiter plucking geese upon Olympus, or were the holy angels moulting? He was only a poor Master of Arts, he went on; and as the question somewhat touched upon divinity, he durst not venture to conclude. A silly old priest from Montargis, who was among the company, treated the young rascal to a bottle of wine in honor of the jest and the grimaces with which it was accompanied, and swore on his own white beard that he had been just such another irreverent dog when he was Villon’s age.

Thoughts

I’m still not entirely sure of the gist of this story. I even read a few passages multiple times. But I still enjoyed it. Even when I didn’t quite get what was going on…

What I loved about this story was the dialogue. I am not the best at writing dialogue at the best of times. And even worse at writing long, heavy conversations. Yet, Stevenson pulls this off amazingly. There are aspects of the prose that are completely constructed of the dialogue between two individuals, and although it is a little long-winded, it is certainly beautifully done and well-written.

Synopsis

Muirin and Conlan are meant for each other, but her evil stepmother stands in the way. Will Muirin be able to overcome all the obstacles in front of them and finally claim her one true love?

Thoughts

This is such a fun, typical Irish romance story. Alright, it’s a lot shorter than many of the tales that I generally read based in this world. And I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoy every single one of these tales. My background is all based in the UK, and there is something that has always drawn me to Irish and Celtic tales.

Muirin and Conlan are such a sweet couple. And from the very beginning of this tale, it is obvious that there is going to be a very large obstacle put in the way of their love and eventual marriage. And because this is in a collection of romance tales, it is equally obvious that they are going to overcome. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t thoroughly enjoyable. And even after her three tasks are laid out in front of her, it isn’t quite obvious just how these obstacles will be overcome. And it is in this that the journey is fun.

I read this just before curling up for bed, and it was a great way to end the night. I got this beautiful little tale of love and Irish folklore while my partner slumbered next to me. And the combination was pleasant and fun. It also lead to some of the more peaceful and pleasant dreams that I’ve had in a while.

October 2018 Recipe Challenge

Duration: 1st October – 31st October
Number of books: 4
Hosted by: Crazy Challenge Connection

* Read a book in which a witch plays an important role OR a book with a word in the title that ends in Y Bound Together by Christine Feehan

recipe posted by Danielle Gypsy Soul

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* Read a book with a 1 in the total page count; tell us how many pages OR book #1 in a series; tell us the series To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before)

2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup whole almonds
1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel
* Read a book with a 3-letter word in the title (do NOT count The, Are or And) OR a book with a predominantly red cover or with a title printed in red; post the cover Fire Bound by Christine Feehan

DIRECTIONS:
Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 325°F. (165°C). Lightly grease baking sheets.
Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance.
* Read a book with a hand showing individual fingers prominently displayed on the cover; post the cover OR a book by an author whose first or last initial can be found in FINGERS P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.
Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.
Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.
