***Spoilers for the original movie of Friday the 13th in the text above the tasks. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want it spoiled then don’t read those parts.***

Duration
July 1st – 31st

Rules
Do at least 2 tasks to complete the challenge and escape Camp Crystal Lake.

Tasks
You’re on your way to your new summer job at Camp Crystal Lake. Unfortunately, you suck at reading a map and have to ask for directions. The only person around is a crazy looking old guy called Crazy Ralph which seems a bit on the nose but you ask him. He warns you to stay away from the camp, that there’s a death curse on it and tells you about a young boy who drowned in the lake in the 50’s.
Of course, you totally ignore him and go to the camp anyway.

1. Read a book set during summer, or in a hot place, or with a character named Ralph. Jodie’s Journey by Colin Thiele

You arrive at the camp and meet your new buddy counselors who seem to be a little distracted with jumping each other’s bones instead of getting the camp ready but what you gonna do?! You realise your new friends have been gone quite awhile and decide to check on them. You notice a large figure walking into one of the cabins and decide to investigate.
2. Read a book with multiple points of view, or more than one person on the cover, or with a detective in the story. Hot August Moon by Katherine Sutcliffe

There’s no sign of the large figure but you do find the arrow-studded and maimed bodies of three of your new counsellor buddies!! You scream bloody murder and run for your truck only to discover the wires were cut. You try the phone in the main cabin but that’s not working either. Then the power goes out….
3. Read a book with a murder plot, or tagged “historical” or “steampunk”, or with a single point of view. Green-Eyed Envy by Kasey MacKenzie

The only other remaining counsellor goes outside to check on the generator. You think it’s a bad idea to split up but hey, it’s his funeral! He never returns (of course) and you start to freak out a little. You decide to take your chances through the woods and leave the cabin. Before you get to the woods a woman shows up and says she’s a friend of the camp owner.
4. Read a book with a female protagonist, or tagged “mystery”, or published after 1980. Must Love Hellhounds by Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews & Meljean Brook

You both go back inside the cabin and she then tells you that the boy who drowned was her son and it was the counsellors’ fault because they were too busying banging to watch her son, Jason. The woman takes a bowie knife out of her coat and attacks you!!
5. Read a book with a female villain, or where a good guy turns out to be a bad guy, or with a bladed weapon on the cover. Mortal Sins by Eileen Wilks

You manage to escape that crazy bitch and run towards the lake (cause you’re traumatized by all the murder and not thinking clearly). That crazy bitch catches up with you and you both fall into the lake. While struggling against her in the water you manage to get her knife and stab her! She floats away leaving a trail of blood behind and you climb into a canoe that just happened to be bobbing along in the lake. You fall asleep in the canoe while it carries you safely towards shore….
6. Read a book with a happy ending, or set in the US, or tagged “horror”. Magic in the Wind by Christine Feehan

You awaken just before you reach the shore to the sounds of police sirens. The police are here, you’re safe!! Suddenly, Jason’s decomposing body emerges from the water and drags you under!!!!
Next time you open your eyes you’re in hospital. You ask the doctor about Jason’s body but they say there was no boy found. He looks at you like you’re nuts which you probably are after all the murder. You lay back down on the bed muttering ‘he’s still there’….

BONUS. Read a book with an epilogue. Lover Beware by Christine Feehan, Katherine Sutcliffe, Fiona Brand & Eileen Wilks
