Synopsis

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MOVIES AND REALITY?
IN REAL LIFE, I WAS THE MONSTER.

Faythe Sanders looks like an ordinary student, but she’s hiding a dark secret: she is a werecat, a powerful supernatural predator. Yet headstrong, independent Faythe resents her power, heading to college to escape her family and her overprotective ex, Marc.

That is until a stray – a dangerous werecat without a pride or territory – catches her scent. With two werecat girls already missing, Faythe is summoned home for her own protection.

But Faythe will do whatever it takes to find her kidnapped kin. She has claws – and she’s not afraid to use them.

Thoughts

This is one of those novels that I have stopped and started a couple of times. And then I read it all in one sitting. There was just something about it that finally grabbed my attention and pulled me in. I think, after you get past the fifth chapter, Vincent really hits her stride and pulls you in. But it does take a little while. And then WABAM! A fantastic novel that I seriously enjoyed.

To start with, I was beyond annoyed at the gumption and attitude of Faythe’s family. And even her ex, Marc, they were just so damn heavy handed and irritating. But, as the story unfolds you kind of begin to see why they act that way. Not that their behaviour is okay, but Faythe is also a little bit of a brat and doesn’t stop to discuss things… she just informs people. I loved that the understanding for why the Sanders act the way they do grows throughout the book, alongside Faythe.

Fayth goes through an awesome transformation throughout this novel. I found it really well written. Instead of one huge moment of epiphany and understanding, she slowly grows into herself and becomes the adult she probably would always have been. It makes me intrigued to read Rogue as I want to see how her newfound maturity serves her as she grows the hell up.

I think that one of the reasons I couldn’t put this down was the action crest towards the middle. I was about to put this aside and cook myself dinner, but there is a moment that has a definite trigger warning attached. And at that point, I just really, really needed to know what in the heck was going to happen next…

Thoughts

I kind of loved this collection. It definitely isn’t one that you can read cover to cover in one sitting – there’s only so many vampire romances that I can happily read before they start to blend into one. But as a slow read that I just picked up every now and again… it was really, really good.

The short stories in this collection ranged from the classical and predictable vampire stories to ones that took a whole new spin on the ideal. Some were just sweet and some just downright disturbing. And although they all follow a similar theme, not one is the same. I now have a very long list of new authors and series that I want to sink my teeth into…

Synopsis

There is a serial killer hunting vampire children, but it isn’t until he meets Keziah and Luci that he truly meets his match.

Thoughts

I really enjoyed the premise set in this story – that of a reality in which being a vampire is like being a human. Completely ordinary and the standard for everyone. They go to school, they have relationships, and they even have serial killers with weird nicknames such as “Midday Mangler”. It just makes the entire story line and system of vampires that much more… “normal”. And I honestly love stories that place a paranormal reality across our everyday one in such a seamless manner.

Although there is a little of a cute romance in this story, and the male romantic partner ultimately ends the story, I got a very family-driven vibe from this short story. The elder sister is willing to do anything to protect her youngest sibling, and her little sister is also willing to be very protective to save her older sister. After all, what are sisters for but to take on a kind of creepy, child-preying serial killer?

Synopsis

It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it’s the worst day of her life.

Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.

She tries to convince everyone she’s fine–despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities….

Thoughts

Oh my god. Now I have to wait until the first novel in this series arrives. Which will probably be in about two weeks from this point… which is a long time when you have found a new series to obsess over. This was just such a great introduction. And I haven’t ever had any book or series on my shelf that features a banshee. And since they are so awesome in folklore, I’m not entirely sure why this is…

I always enjoy reading about creatures and characters from folklore in our modern day settings. But, as previously mentioned, this is my first banshee tale. And it worked amazingly. Imagine screaming whenever someone near you is going to die… now imagine being a teenager. In and of itself each of these things can be incredibly difficult. But combined? Wow. And this was only an incredibly short novella that helped to introduce Kaylee. I can’t imagine what the rest of the series is going to be like!

Half of this story involves Kaylee being incarcerated in a psych ward. And it is as truly horrible as I imagine it to be. Kaylee’s experiences and emotions tore at my heartstrings and pulled me incredibly far into this story. And now I need to wait for my copy of My Soul to Take to see what the aftermath of her incarceration will be…I honestly don’t know if I have the patience.
