Synopsis

The first rule of a supernatural fight club? Don’t kill your opponent.

When the fighters come with lethal spells, werewolf strength and half-demon powers, that can be a lot tougher than it sounds. It’s hard to attract talent if they know they might not leave the ring alive. So when fighters at a California club start dying — it’s bad for business.

Witch detectives Paige Winterbourne and Savannah Levine take the case. Going undercover in the power-heavy arena of the fight club is a welcome change of pace for Paige, relegated to the role of The Wife as her husband struggles to find his place in his family’s Cabal–the corporate Mafia of the supernatural world.

As Paige is drawn deeper into new and dangerous corners of her world, she quickly discovers the greatest threat isn’t the killer in her sights. It’s something much, much closer to home. And this is one fight she can’t afford to lose.

Thoughts

Paige and Lucas have been a solid and sweet couple since they first got together in Dime Store Magic. Of all of the couples throughout the series, they’re the one that I most want to be – supportive of each other, yet independent of one another and able to pursue their own interests. Yet, things become a little bit more rocky now that they’re both taking a more active role in the Cabal. The very independence that makes them such a wonderful couple makes it hard for Paige when she isn’t treated with the respect and individuality that she is used to.

Although Paige and Lucas continue to try and keep ‘business as usual’, they find that slowly a wedge is being driven between them. The fact that there are external influences and a case to help this along doesn’t occur to them until the very end of this novella. These treacherous undertones lead to big trouble, and actually made me cry towards the end. After all, they’re the most similar couple to myself and my partner, and the fact that there are cracks in their relationship made me concerned about my own.

Counterfeit Magic may be mostly about Paige and Lucas’ relationship, but it also puts Savannah back into the spotlight. She is now 21, and although her school girl crush has been outgrown, her friendship with Adam has blossomed. To the point that this is a great precursor for their eventual get together. Or so I predict anyway.

Synopsis

The team-spirit sign by the side of the highway seems a good omen to loner Morgan Walsh, as he drives to what could be the most important visit of his life — a chance to join the North American Pack. Then he wakes naked in the woods, surrounded by wolf tracks and a ring of suspicious cops. The situation only gets worse when he’s bailed out by Alpha-elect Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers, her terrifying enforcer and mate.

Disappointed that such a promising young werewolf risked exposing them, Elena isn’t expecting anything from the pesky retrieval job except some much-needed alone time with Clay. Instead, she finds a different kind of evil stalking the streets and forests of Westwood, New York. Trapped in town by a snowstorm and sabotage, Elena, Clay and Morgan must find the mysterious threat before it sets its sights on them.

Thoughts

Morgan’s introduction to the Pack was certainly an interesting one – after all, he’s the first known werewolf to choose to spend all of his time as a wolf. But, now he’s decided to join the human world again and in doing so, is considering joining the Pack. But, as with everything in Kelley Armstrong’s world, nothing happens easily and nothing is as it seems.

Elena and Clay’s attempt to escape cabin fever and their over enthusiastic toddlers leads to their intersection with Morgan and a serial killer. Life in a small town just got a lot more dangerous. Although, eventually, it can be seen that the small town mentality is probably what caused the spate of ritualistic, weird, weird, weird killings.

Ultimately, this is a great test for Morgan’s ability to join the Pack. He is forced to accept Clay and Elena’s dominance and work in a team. Both things which he just isn’t used to doing. The fact that Clay is grouchy and unable to gentle him into the role just makes it all the more entertaining to watch their relationships evolve and unfold.

Synopsis

Hiking through the snow, holiday baking and playing board games by the fire – what’s not to love about an old-fashioned family Christmas?

Werewolves Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers want to give their four-year-old twins, Kate and Logan, something their parents never had: a nice, normal holiday. No Pack responsibilities, no homicidal half-demons or power-hungry sorcerers to deal with – just the four of them, alone, at a chalet outside Ontario’s Algonquin Park.

Then a strange werewolf shows up at their door…while the town is buzzing about a young man, back from college, found half-eaten in the woods. And there’s the missing little girl …

With all the signs pointing to a rogue mutt with a taste for human flesh, Elena and Clay have no choice but to investigate. But are they the hunters – or the hunted?

Thoughts

I love those nights that I stay up late to finish a story. Whether it is short, long, or somewhere in between (like this one), those impossible-to-put-down tales always linger in my mind long after I’ve turned the last page. And Hidden did this for me.

Hidden is not only a great new story about Elena, Clay and their twins, but also a beautiful Christmas story. Trying to get away and just be a normal family for the holiday season doesn’t work out as planned. Although, nothing ever seems to for Elena and Clay. But, this time instead of being faced down with the dangers of a man-killer, they are forced to face up to something much, much worse.

The twins are now four years old in this series. They are everything you’d expect from such unique parents and more. So one of the biggest challenges that is faced in this novella (other than the rogue mutt) is when to tell them how special they are. It’s hard enough to grow up different, but I can’t imagine growing up knowing that I was that different. It takes a lot of internal and external torment for Elena to finally decide when the right time will be.

Synopsis

Zoe Tanaka and her vampire-hunter turned sidekick Brittany find a man who claims to know who the vampires of Toronto are. The list gets him in all kinds of trouble until they rescue him.

Thoughts

Although Zoe has only appeared in one of the Women of the Otherworld novels (so far), this is her second short story, and I loved her as much this time as I did the first and second. She is cute, sweet and dangerous. But this is so well hidden, that unless you had read Learning Curve, you wouldn’t pick up on all of the subtle nuances that Armstrong uses to construct her persona.

Zoe’s new protegee also makes an appearance as they both track down the man who claims to have found all of the vampires in Toronto. And then they proceed to save him.

I love this look into the ways in which media and subcultures can impact on peoples’ views. The dangers of upsetting people are always real, but when you’re dealing with the supernatural. Well, let’s just say that it’s lucky that Zoe was there to save the day.

Synopsis

Gripping, intense and deeply satisfying, Frostbitten is a brilliant novel of suspense with a supernatural twist.

After years of struggle, Elena Michaels has finally accepted her life as a werewolf, and learned how to control her wild side.

At least, that’s what she believes when she sets off to investigate a series of gruesome murders outside Anchorage. The truth, however, is more complicated. Trapped in a frozen, unforgiving terrain, Elena is forced to confront a deadly secret, and her own, untamed nature…

Thoughts

I always love revisiting Elena and Clay in the Women of the Otherworld series. Although I have so far loved every couple and character throughout this series, there is something especially precious about Elena and Clay. Maybe because they are the couple that first started everything. Which is why Frostbitten was another Women of the Otherworld book that I read in a very short space of time.

Frostbitten also reintroduced a character from Chivalrous, which was a novella that I loved, but I couldn’t quite fit into the series. Reese’s catalytic appearance into the story and the instigator of the events of Frostbitten helped to fit this into the timeline, and (which led me to my happy place) bought the first Australian into the tale.

One of the things that I loved about this tale is that it not only takes our characters to Alaska, a place that seems both beautiful and terrifying, but it also introduced Native American folklore as well. The seamless integration of another supernatural into Armstrong’s world helped to up the stakes on the battle that Elena and Clay are forced to fight, but also expanded the idea that we don’t truly know what is out there. Elena might have access to a much larger world than we do, but she is still completely unaware of some of the mysteries that surround her.

Elena is also forced to face up to some of her past in this story. The horrors of what happened to her as a child threaten to repeat themselves as she chases down a mutt and justice. It actually gave me goosebumps and I had to put the book down once or twice to shake the feeling of horror that kept on creeping up my skin. Yet, ultimately, it doesn’t really seem to matter. What matters is that she has a fantastic mate and loyal family to fall back on. Something that we all truly need.

Synopsis

This was a very short story written as an extra for Frostbitten.
It takes place before the book begins, and launched the investigation that eventually led Elena and Clay to Alaska.

Thoughts

Recruit touches on a couple of issues for the werewolf pack. Firstly, they need to find new recruits without telegraphing their vulnerability to those who wish them ill. Secondly, when they do find someone who wishes to join them, the need to assess their suitability becomes increasingly difficult. Roy’s attempted blackmail and slightly skewed way in which he attempts to ingratiate himself with the pack is a great way to remind us of this.

Clay and Elena’s ability to roust and take control of the situation in which they find themselves is a great reminder of the fact that these two are some of the toughest (and scariest) supernaturals in the entire Women of the Otherworld series. Their protectiveness and willingness to fight for what is theirs stops them from crossing the line between crazy thugs to protective good guys.

Synopsis

In Frostbitten, Elena mentions tracking a killer in Winnipeg. This is that story.

Thoughts

Elena and Clay are the dream team of hunting and justice. Clay is ruthless and protective in a way that excludes all other emotions. Elena on the other hand can be a little too protective of her family, yet is quick to ask for evidence before execution. Combined, they make a great team, and this short story was a way in which to show this without the influence of the rest of the pack.

The synchronicity with which Elena and Clay are able to finally act (after many, many fights and years of rebellion) can truly be felt in Checkmate. The ways in which the two are able to complement each other is like a chess game, they constantly play games with their prey and one another. I love this final feeling of peace between the two – they have finally found their speed, and are able to function as a truly terrifying team.

Synopsis

Revisit Hope and Karl as Hope is forced to deal with her father’s minions in her positions as Lucifer’s Daughter.

Thoughts

Hope and Karl are such a unique couple (although the thing that I love about the Women of the Otherworld series is that all of the couples are incredibly unique). At the conclusion of Living with the Dead, Karl chooses to leave Hope to her own devices. To allow her to learn the control she needs over her own powers, and abilities. So, revisiting them after they have been united was a really enjoyable way to spend some time.

Hope’s existence as Lucifer’s daughter is also further investigated throughout this short story. The prestige of this position, and the impact it can have on other demons is such an interesting contrast to the ritzy, glamorous world into which Hope was born. I love the contrast between her two worlds and the way that she is able to (almost) effortlessly glide between. And the completely smooth way in which Karl is able to join her in both realities shows what a great match they are. And that for everyone, there are multiple facets of their personality that can be hidden under layer upon layer of personnas.

Synopsis

Zoe teaches a professor not to play with the occult unless he is prepared to deal with the consequences.

Thoughts

Every time I read a short story featuring Zoe Tanaka, I fall a little more in love with her. Her unique outlook and career as a vampire was certainly fascinating in Broken, but it isn’t until you get the privilege of knowing her more that the enigma that is Zoe is truly revealed. Unlike initial impressions (mostly by Elena), Zoe isn’t a weak, scared pushover, she is exactly the opposite. And her ability to manipulate a situation to suit herself, without resorting to violence is a great draw in for her character and the storyline.

I love the idea that, although Zoe is escaping a stalker, the entire story is about teaching the next generation of supernaturals. Her sass and humour at such a task is irreplaceable. But, it is ultimately her willingness to teach others, instead of taking revenge or feeling bitter at her situation that makes me love her even more.

Synopsis

As a half-demon master of the dark arts, Eve Levine isn’t what anyone would call angelic. That’s exactly why the Fates chose her for the job. She’s their secret weapon against the forces of evil. However after five years, Eve is tired of being the designated rebel of the angel corps, expected to break the rules, then penalized for it. When the leaderless djinn stage an uprising, Eve sees the perfect chance to get herself fired. As she plunges deeper into the demon world, though, she realizes she’s in danger of losing a lot more than her job.

Thoughts

Every time I read a new Eve story, I fall a little more in love with her character. Although at the beginning she seems like nothing more than a Black Witch, the more her journey is revealed, the more the cracks in this façade appear. She is nothing like what she originally appeared to be in Stolen, and Angelic just brings her further from the image that is quickly built up by others’ descriptions.

As with all double standards, Eve is constantly both rewarded and penalised for her choices in life. Even in death. Although this chafes, it also helps to liberate her from certain expectations (and punish her at the same time). These juxtapositions between her acceptance and dismissal by the Fates, and even the other angels are an interesting reminder of the double standards that often occur in our own lives. We can be both stroked and slapped for doing exactly the same thing, sometimes even by the same people. It is impossible to please everyone, but it is even more difficult when someone’s preconceptions about who and what you are colour everything you do. If someone thinks that you are a bad sort, then no matter what you do, they will still view your good acts through a negative light.

Although Eve primarily deals with these double standards throughout Angelic, she also is forced to concede to her feelings about her role in the afterlife. Being an angel comes with a variety of responsibilities and perks – but, in Angelic, Eve must decide what she really wants in life. Or in this case, the afterlife.
