Thoughts

I actually read this twice before writing this review, each reading about a week apart. I loved it when I first read it, but there was something haunting in the refrain, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Almost like it haunted my dreams as in the story. So I read it again, which helped to dispel that lingering feeling of haunting and confusion that was lingering around.

One of the things that I often love about fairy tales is the surreal beauty that permeates them. And de Lint was able to enhance this to the extreme. Using the iconic thematic sense of the moon and mixing this with dreamscapes and a desire to know oneself, there is a beauty and completely unreal feeling to this story. I loved the imagery, and it was because of this that I found it so hard to put down. And so easy to read twice in a row.

What happens when your not-so-smart muscle gives away the money he was supposed to be collecting for you? Well, in this comedy of errors, you find out one way to deal with it. And meet a very unique couple that is just feeling the first blossoms of love…

Throughout this entire short story things just steadily kept getting worse and worse. More and more incorrect and confusing… and I loved how it just steadily went downhill. Although this isn’t the most memorable of stories, the fact atht it is just a calamity of errors and poor judgement completely bespelled me. And even though I probably won’t be reading it again anytime soon, I certainly enjoyed my time in this world.

Thoughts

I really enjoyed the first reading of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. So I was super, amazingly, ridiculously excited to read the illustrated and expanded edition. Actually, I was incredibly disappointed to finish this story. It was just so damn good.

I always enjoy companions and partners to series that I’m obsessed with. This is no different. But the amazing images by Olivia Gill… they just add an extra layer of… well… obsession to this. The images alone in this book would make me want to flick through it again and again and again. But, partnered with the realistic wording and creation of a whole new world.

This was my quiet, easy, late night read with a cup of tea. It has that sense of wonder and awe that I find with every Harry Potter book, but the illustrations add an extra sense of waboom. Incredibly disappointed that I had to finish this, and it didn’t continue on forever.

Thoughts

I was given this last Christmas from my partner. And although I’d flicked through it, I didn’t quite get the chance to actually read this until the other night. And man are Jim Kay’s illustrations damn amazing!

I didn’t really read this word for word – I skimmed the words and let the illustrations throughout tell their own story. Letting the images wash over me as I read a passage here and there bought back all the wonder of the first reading of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. But something about somebody else’s imaginings took the story to a whole other level. One that I will be thinking about for a long time yet.

Thoughts

I’m not American. I have never been to, understood or had anything to do with Thanksgiving. My closest relationship to this holiday is what I see on movies, and the comments I see across social media. Having said all of that, this is certainly my first ever Thanksgiving-themed story. And it was incredibly enjoyable… I think I’m beginning to understand a bit of the American feelings towards this holiday… maybe… I’m still not even 100% sure what it’s about.

I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t have a chance to read The Scent of Shadows before The Harvest. Although this was an amazing novella in and of on itself, there were hints and ideas of the storyline from the first novel scattered throughout. Especially the trauma of Jo and Zoe’s role in her life. Yet, there is such a hint of an amazing untold story that I am fighting the urge to rip the first novel off my shelf and just devour it… first I need to finish some of the other books I have on my shelf… time for a little self-control and discipline…

Synopsis

Six is a well trained agent for China. It isn’t until she meets Joseph, a necromancer that she finally meets her match. And her first vampire. And that’s where things quickly begin to unravel.

Thoughts

I absolutely adored this novella. It’s fast-paced, kind of sassy and full of action. Not to mention the woman in the couple is the one more likely to kick your ass. That, and all of this fast-paced, sassy action takes place in Shanghai, with the backdrop of the Chinese New Year. The setting gives an extra layer of character and beauty to the storyline that I don’t often experience in novellas.

I enjoyed this version of “vampires”. It didn’t take the normal shape of blood-sucking fiends, but it did have the same thematic tones as other vampire stories. Mixing in a necromancer or two just helps to up the stakes and create a world that I’m really disappointed only exists in this one novella. I actually went online hunting to see if this is part of a greater series or word. But, alas, it isn’t.

Although I thoroughly enjoy the urban fantasy aspects of this tale, I think that the bit I enjoyed the most is the Chinese background. You can tell that Liu has spent time in Shanghai at the turn of the year, her familiarity almost screams from the page. The characters and the storyline won’t fail to draw you in, but it is the setting that has made this such a memorable tale for me.

Thoughts

I laughed through most of this story. It was just one of those slightly humorous, feel good, easy reads that sweep you along. In fact, it swept me along so well that the “I’ll just read a chapter” thing went straight out the window and I read this entire novella in one sitting. Always a good indication of how much I enjoyed the storyline.

Jill gets zapped by some weird molecular destabiliser, finds out that there’s a mad man after her, and runs away. At first I couldn’t really tell where this story was going. She gets zapped, there’s a mad man and a love interest (you’d think I would have picked up on some of the storyline earlier). But it pretty quickly becomes a fun, intense journey that feels like a constant game of cat and mouse.

Although I enjoyed the chase in the story, my favourite part was the romance. Nick and Jill have this amazing simmering passion. But beyond the sexual tension, there is this great emotional connection and relationship. The fact that it starts to take place on a Christmas float, and at some point, a reindeer running rampant, just helps to add a little more flavour and laughter to the random adventures that help to increase the power of the relationship throughout this Christmas story.

I read this because it was in a Christmas collection and I really wanted to get into the Christmas spirit. Yet, I’m still completely unaware as to what this has to do with Christmas. Other than the fact that all of the action takes place on the solstice.

Regardless of the fact that I specifically wanted a Christmas story, and didn’t get one… I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. And can’t wait to discover more of The Hollows series. Rachel is an independent and strong woman. But in a way that is completely different to every other strong woman I’ve read about. Normally they are physically able, and can kick box and karate or whatever form of self defence… but Rachel is actually incredibly physically weak. Yet, this is what lends her so much strength and power. And makes you root for her as she rushes around the city, after a ghost, trying to find a missing girl and a creepy, demented vampire.

I tend to buy these small collections of novellas to contribute to one of the series on my shelf. And then when I read them, I get to discover new authors and series that just continue to expand on my collection…

I loved this collection of novellas. I was expecting a very mushy gushy collection judging by the fact that it is classified as paranormal romance. However, it wasn’t like that at all. Each of the stories did feature sex and some form of romance, but it wasn’t incredibly intense. The sexual tension helped to add an extra layer to the storyline, without taking over it.

And don’t get me wrong… I love the stories that are all about the romance, but sometimes it’s nice to have a set of stories which have a sexual tension component, without it just being about that.

Thoughts

Oh my god. Now I have to wait until the first novel in this series arrives. Which will probably be in about two weeks from this point… which is a long time when you have found a new series to obsess over. This was just such a great introduction. And I haven’t ever had any book or series on my shelf that features a banshee. And since they are so awesome in folklore, I’m not entirely sure why this is…

I always enjoy reading about creatures and characters from folklore in our modern day settings. But, as previously mentioned, this is my first banshee tale. And it worked amazingly. Imagine screaming whenever someone near you is going to die… now imagine being a teenager. In and of itself each of these things can be incredibly difficult. But combined? Wow. And this was only an incredibly short novella that helped to introduce Kaylee. I can’t imagine what the rest of the series is going to be like!

Half of this story involves Kaylee being incarcerated in a psych ward. And it is as truly horrible as I imagine it to be. Kaylee’s experiences and emotions tore at my heartstrings and pulled me incredibly far into this story. And now I need to wait for my copy of My Soul to Take to see what the aftermath of her incarceration will be…I honestly don’t know if I have the patience.
