Synopsis

It’s the most anticipated reality television event of the season: three spiritualists gathered together in one house to raise the ghost of Marilyn Monroe. For renowned medium Jaime Vegas there’s just one problem. Unlike her colleagues, Jaime is the real deal: and she knows that the house is truly haunted. Not by dead film stars, but by something even stranger and much more disturbing.

A tragic mystery lurks in the maze of gardens behind the house: trapped spirits that only Jaime can hear. As their whispers grow more frantic, Jaime – along with Alpha werewolf Jeremy Danvers – is forced to embark on an investigation into a shocking underworld of black magic and ritual sacrifice.

Thoughts

When there were first hints of Jamie’s crush on Jeremy in Industrial Magic, I really wasn’t sure what to think. The werewolf alpha and a woman that is flighty and enjoys numerous flings… it seemed like a bit of a weird combination of characters in a romantic entanglement. However, truly learning more about Jamie from her point of view in No Humans Involved completely removed these misgivings. Within the first two chapters, I went from wondering how they would work together to keeping my fingers crossed for such a relationship to develop.

Jamie is cast as someone who is necessary throughout other Women of the Otherworld tales, but she isn’t quite able to protect herself. Although this makes the whole series more accessible – there are literally supernatural women of every kind, it does make it a little hard to see how she can hold her own in a world that is, quite frankly, dangerous. I loved that this lead character didn’t have super strength, or super powers to defend herself, but often had to resort to her own ability to talk her way out of things. Her insecurities about this when surrounded by others who are able to, quite simply, blast their way out of any uncomfortable situation made her character all the more realistic, and likeable. Her eventual embracing of her powers and abilities not only lead to her saving herself (instead of just waiting to be rescued), but also an inner happiness and health that she hadn’t previously felt.

Where most of the women in the Women of the Otherworld series have jobs and careers that helps them to hide amongst the non-supernatural, Jamie’s chosen career path embraces the attention surrounding the desire for the paranormal. Her ability to twist her talents to not only enhance her career, but also to imply that they don’t exist, all in the same moment are phenomenal. I like that she uses an inherent talent in a way that most frown upon, however, it is something that she genuinely enjoys. Instead of simply being a charlatan who preys on the weak for their money, she truly hopes that by contacting (and pretending to contact) the dead gives closure to the grieving. And after all, who among us don’t hope that there is somewhere better for our lost loved ones, a place in which they are happy and all of their earthly problems have been forgiven and forgotten?

Synopsis

Elena wasn’t looking for trouble. But when a half-demon calls in a favour, you don’t have much choice.

The job seemed simple enough: steal back Jack the Ripper’s infamous “From Hell” letter from a shady Toronto-based collector. But nothing is ever that simple in the supernatural underground. When Elena accidentally triggers a spell placed on the letter, she opens a portal into the dark streets of Victorian London.

Bad enough that Jack the Ripper could now be on the prowl in modern Toronto – but there is something even more terrifying lurking in the shadows, just waiting to cross through…and only Elena and her Pack can stop it.

Thoughts

I loved, loved, loved revisiting Elena after three books in which she only had a passing role. The fact that she begins the story pregnant and actually enjoying her life with Clay just made everything better. Their unique blend of violence, sarcasm and passion still managing to burn brightly in spite of all they had been through in their relationship. Plus, Elena is one of the most unique and prickly heroines that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting – her non-traditional relationship with Clay helps to further echo this.

Mistake after mistake built on one another to lead the Pack into a danger unlike any other that they had faced. Elena’s mentions of Logan and Pete, the two Pack members lost five years prior helped to highlight the sense of loss that she still feels keenly. Although this mention was slight, it was also a fantastic way in which to remind us that the loss of a loved one is forever felt. Although time may heal the worst of the hurt, a dull echo will forever remain, and this is certainly true for Elena, to the point that even socially-disadvantaged Clay is able to feel empathy for this sense of bereavement.

In Bitten and Stolen, although Elena is incredibly loveable, she is still an inherently selfish and immature girl. Yes, she will do anything to save her small family (the Pack), but she will do it in the way that she feels is best. And it really doesn’t matter what cooler heads have to say. Although this does work out at times throughout the past tales, it does put Jeremy, and especially Clay in awkward positions as they try and rescue or protect her. However, with the advent of motherhood, Elena is not only better at listening to others and respecting the need to work as a team, but she is also more careful to think through her actions. It is nice when she actually realises that her life isn’t just about her – but Clay, Jeremy and her unborn child.

Synopsis

Eve Levine – half-demon, black witch and devoted mother – has been dead for three years.

It’s not so bad. She has a fantastic love life and can’t be killed again – which is handy when you’ve made as many enemies as Eve. If she could just find a way to communicate with her daughter Savannah she’d be content.

But fate – or more exactly, the Fates – have other plans. Eve owes them a favour, and they’ve just called it in. She must track down the Nix – an evil spirit who feeds on chaos and death.

The Nix is a terrifying enemy – previous hunters have been sent mad in the process. If Eve wants to avoid their fate, she’ll need something extraordinary – an angel’s sword.

There’s just one problem. Eve’s definitely no angel…

Thoughts

In the previous Women of the Otherworld books, Eve Levine is painted as a woman of questionable morals and motives, it was nice to finally get to know a little more about the elusive black witch, half demon woman. Although I expected it from Armstrong’s past writing, Eve’s sass and lack of respect for the rules were thoroughly enjoyable. Her motherly instincts and love however were a lot more softening and warm than I expected.

It’s always difficult to imagine the rules behind the afterlife – is there reincarnation? Heaven and hell? What does it look like? Armstrong created this world in such a vivid and realistic way that I can quite happily imagine spending my own afterlife in this realm. The creation of the different layers of hell was incredibly unique and independent way. Much like the literary punishments that she dolls out to the serious sinners in life such as serial killers.

Although Haunted is about the battle between good and evil within the ghost world, and all the shades of grey in between, it is also about motherhood, love and letting go. Eve’s teenage daughter is a big driver within all of her actions throughout the story, especially in the beginning. But she also has a lover who wants her back, and a choice to make between her priorities. It’s a question that must be asked in every parents’ life – when do you let your child grow and make their own decisions?

Thoughts

I am absolutely in LOVE with this stunning collection of short stories. The strong women; unabashed way in which these four authors approach a woman’s sensuality and sexuality; and the fantastical worlds which are created through their masterful words create a series of spine-tingling stories that will leave you greatly anticipating just what happens next. Long after the last page has been turned, the characters float through my mind in an antagonising march of potent story-telling and rampant romance.

I’m a sucker for a good romance, and I love it even more when the woman is strong and independent enough to fight for herself, whilst still embracing the love with which they are presented. As a woman, the fine line between succumbing to love while still remaining strong and tough is a difficult one to walk. To create literary characters that embody this in a way that they appeal to a wider audience is immensely difficult, and the authors who contributed to this anthology show their supreme talents in being able to construct these characters.

Synopsis

Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch – if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life:

If the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical ‘treatment’ that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption.

But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

Thoughts

Vasic’s role in the Psy rebellion throughout the series was always a little confusing – he appeared to be on the side of the good guys, but seemed to be working for the bad guys. His short appearances throughout the rest of the novels make it incredibly difficult to pinpoint his motives and alliances. The same can be said for most of the Arrows, their presence throughout the Psy-Changeling series hinting that they may be on the right side, but the very darkness that they carry due to their gifts make that a questionable assumption. Shield of Winter, however, changes all of that.

I tend to get a little frustrated when the Changelings aren’t as present throughout the story – I have a love for wolves and big cats. However, a story that focused almost entirely on the Arrows, Kaleb and the newly acknowledged empaths helped to lesson this frustration. Yes, the Changelings are incredibly tactile and enchanting characters, but the delightful mix of the caring conscientiousness of empaths and the deadly capabilities of a squad of assassins created a story that I look forward to reading again and again and again.

In Vasic’s plight and inability to accept his past, Singh highlights the ways in which we can be systematically and brutally destroyed if we go against our natures. The newly awakened place for the empaths within the world of the Psy is a great echo of this throughout the story. Constantly being told not to follow your instincts can be incredibly debilitating, not admitting their importance and being taught to go directly against them, as Vasic did is a pain that I cannot imagine.

Again, Singh has managed to not only write an amazing paranormal romance and dark fantasy, but she has created a story that makes me constantly think about my own actions and impulses. Something that all truly talented authors are able to do.

Synopsis

Bastien Smith is frustrated. A changeling male should be able to track his mate anywhere—through fire and hail, snow and rain. But he keeps finding and losing her scent in the city streets, ever since he first became aware of it two weeks earlier, when the elusive fragrance awakened the leopard within him…

Then Bastien is suddenly confronted with his prey. Kirby is an all-too-human woman who wants Bastien just as much as he wants her. But he can’t deny what his body and senses are telling him: there is a raging chaos inside of Kirby that he doesn’t understand, secrets that whisper awake at midnight and cause her terrible pain. If they’re to have any chance of forever, then he must solve the mystery that is Kirby…

Thoughts

Like a lot of people who believe in true love, I enjoy a nice, sweet paranormal romance. Especially when it’s a short story about falling in love, finding your family and getting your own kind of happy ending. And if it’s characters that have a difficult past and have always struggled to fit in with the rest of the world. Not only is it a reminder of the fact that we can all find our place in the world, but it gives me hope that in spite of your scars, you will find someone that accepts all of them. Kirby is one such heroine – she is terrified of intimacy and struggles to trust, but has a sweet heart and kind demeanour that makes you want to give her a huge hug and bring her into your own family.

Bastien, although a little too overboard and possessive for my tastes, works away at all of these insecurities and shows what true love and support is all about. Singh brilliantly intertwines the lives of these two characters to tell a sweet little tale about finding one’s place in life and embracing happiness when it is thrown at you.

Synopsis

Seven years ago, Kenji broke Garnet’s heart. Now the wolf packmates have to investigate the shocking murder of one of their own. And the more Kenji sees of the woman Garnet has become, the deeper he begins to fall once more. But even his primal instincts are no match for the dark secret he carries…

Thoughts

There were hints of Kenji and Garnet’s love throughout the last few books, Kiss of Snow especially highlighted their flirtations. But, since it was Singh telling the tale, the simplicity of flirting is the only easy thing about their courtship. It was thoroughly enjoyable to read about two people who seem to have been almost mated for years, but unable to make that final commitment. Slowly discovering just why that is will probably make you shed a tear – you’ve been forewarned.

Combining the entanglement of love and a complicated history with murder ensured that this slightly longer novella was an engaging read from start to finish. I couldn’t even put the story down to eat my dinner, much to my family’s frustration! Russ’ death, the ensuing investigation and the display of how badly love can be soured without acceptance of one another tended to take centre stage to Kenji and Jem’s dance. However, instead of taking away from their story, it only added to it, displaying both characters in a way that made you feel the depth of hurt between them and understand both of their actions. It is so simple to make one character the bad one in a relationship, whilst the other is inherently good, to display them both as loving, yet slightly insecure characters takes the talent that Singh has in bucket loads.

Synopsis

Step into New York Times Bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained blood red.

A woman whose very existence has been erased.

A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.

A deadly price that must be paid.

The day of reckoning is here.

Thoughts

Kaleb Krychek has been an enigma throughout the series. At the very beginning he seems to be the portent of all that is evil, but then, as the story of the Psy-Changeling world progresses, he seems to become far more ambiguous in his morality. Something that led to no end of confusion and intrigue as I’ve slowly read the series. So discovering more about him and his past, let alone the one person he holds dear was a thoroughly enjoyable journey that I encourage all Singh fans to undertake.

Heart of Obsidian not only finally explains so much about Kaleb and his ultimate goals within the PsyNet, but it also helps to tie up other storylines that had previously so confused me. The overarching role of Santano (who we had the displeasure of meeting in Slave to Sensation) in the lives of both Kaleb and many other Psys was more than a little horrifying, but it was somehow cathartic to finally realise the extent to which his actions impacted others.

The threat of Pure Psy and their ability to perform the most atrocious of acts under the banner of belief was also an astoundingly strong theme throughout this novel. Not only was the ability of these individuals to commit massacres at incredible levels enough to make me cringe and shiver at the thought, it sent a potent message – even under the banner of belief, acts of murder and genocide are not acceptable. Although this is purely fictional, the message is resounding in our everyday lives and the ways in which people are able to attack others under the guise of religion.

Synopsis

Still raw from being burned by a dominant female, wolf changeling Felix will never again risk being a plaything. But for dominant leopard Dezi, he’s the most fascinating man she’s ever met. She just has to convince this gun-shy wolf that he can trust the dangerous cat who wants to take a slow, sexy bite out of him…

Thoughts

The idea of a more dominant female that was so beautifully explored in Play of Passion comes to full fruition in this great short story. Not to mention the way in which the cross pack relationships that Riley and Mercy began seem to filter through and bloom within Partners in Persuasion. Not only does this short story have the same tantalising and spine-tingling romance that characterises the Psy-Changeling series, it also displays the filtering through of the expanded acceptance between the two bonded changeling groups.

As someone who ultimately had to make the first move, I really appreciated that Singh was able to write so wonderfully of Dezi’s playful stalking of Felix. Although I know that it is rare even in everyday life, not to mention a peculiarity in most stories, the idea of the female being the aggressor in the relationship and courtship was a welcome one. Felix’s ability to accept this and return her overtures of courtship was even more tantalising. Although the roles of courtship that we tend to traditionally assign to a gender within the relationship were reversed, both Dezi and Felix were able to acknowledge each other’s femininity and masculinity respectively.

Synopsis

Discover the exhilarating risks of passion in the breathtaking new Psy-Changeling novel by Nalini Singh.

Adria, wolf changeling and resilient soldier, has made a break with the past. Now comes a new territory, and a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer lieutenant already sworn to someone else.

For Riaz, the primal attraction he feels for Adria is a staggering betrayal. For Adria, his dangerous lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It consumes her. It terrifies her. It threatens to undermine everything she has built of her new life. But fighting their wild compulsion toward one another proves a losing battle.

Their coming together is an inferno… and a melding of two wounded souls who promise each other no commitment, no ties, no bonds. Only pleasure. Too late, they realise that they have more to lose than they ever imagined. Drawn into a cataclysmic Psy war that may alter the fate of the world itself, they must make a decision that might just break them both.

Thoughts

The storylines in the Psy-Changeling world just keep getting more and more complex. The fact that they do is not only a testimony to Singh’s ability to expand on her universe, whilst maintaining unique romance stories. After reading eleven books in the same series, all with their own, unique romantic partners, I was expecting to begin to feel same same about the storylines. It is hard to have a series with such a common thread have enough variety to keep one enthralled. Especially when it is not focused on one, single character’s development.

The idea of Riaz and Adria was a unique one in that Riaz was already mated, so it was difficult to see how these two could have a successful romance. However, as I just mentioned, Singh managed to find a new spin on an old theme and tell it in a way that shocked and surprised me. The choices that both characters made weren’t exactly what I envisaged, and the journey was an indescribably suspenseful one.

Sienna and Hawke are frequently visited in Tangle of Need, their roles as the alpha pair of one of the most powerful changeling groups in the world necessitating such an inclusion. However, the transition throughout the series from a tale focused on one couple with the appearance of others, to a story of full-blown war with a constantly present cast of characters has been a slow and steady one. This change in the theme and format of the stories helps to highlight the greater theme of the series, and make sure that readers fall in love with Singh’s Psy-Changeling novels again and again and again.
