Synopsis

Little ever seems to stir in the sleepy woods of a small Vermont tonw, until a new owner takes over the exclusive local inn. He is centuries old and has traveled far and wide to find his queen – and now nothing will stop him from claiming her…

Thoughts

I do believe in love at first sight. Yet, I always find it a bit bleugh when I read about it. There is just something about it that feels kind of ridiculous when I read a story which features someone who falls stupid in love on first sight. Not sure why, since I did the same thing myself. Yet, the love at first sight in this kind of worked. Probably because although he fell in love pretty quickly, she took her time about it and didn’t just melt when she was told that Bastien loved her.

I still haven’t managed to buy any of the books in the Midnight series, but this has definitely inspired me to want to even more. There is something great about this version of vampires that makes me completely intrigued. Like the other stories which I’ve got on my shelves by Emma Holly. She just has such a unique, romantic spin on paranormal creatures that I don’t normally come across.

I can’t imagine being a vampire… I love being in the sun WAY too much. Yet, I love that this story features a woman who tends to be a bit of a night owl herself. Makes it a little less inconvenient when she is turned into a vampire against her will.

Lastly, I love that there is a great sense of karma in this story. After being left by her ex-husband and betrayed by her best friend… karma came full circle and gave me this great happiness when the story sadly ended.

Synopsis

In a dark jungle, a beautiful activist liberates animals from a secret laboratory—and stumbles across an unexpected prisoner. She releases the Carpathian from his bonds—only to unleash his voracious appetite on herself…

Thoughts

I’ve had the Carpathians series sitting on my shelves for quite a while… yet, I haven’t actually started reading it just yet. Mostly because I’m trying to finish off some other series first… but now that I’ve read my first novella in this universe… I’m incredibly keen to start this series too!!! It’s a typical, intense Feehan tale. One that is about possession, obsession and love. And all of those slightly darker emotions that seem to be built upon when dealing with romances.

I loved that this story featured two different supernatural groups which are on the verge of extinction. The ways in which the different men and women are trying to ensure their survival. Again, much, much darker than typically expected. Feehan most certainly likes to highlight some of our baser instincts and emotions. It made for a somewhat easy read, but still one that made me have to stop and pause, really think about what I was reading. Definitely not a feel good story, but most certainly an enjoyable one.

Sadly, this is one of those novellas that I would normally just read in one sitting. That’s one of the things I love about novellas… they’re a quick, easy read that can fill in the gaps. Sadly, I’ve been having some serious issues with concentrating lately, and it took me three days to get through. I’m sure when I get to Dark Prince, I’ll be able to get through it at a much quicker rate.

Synopsis

In the steam-fuelled world of Victorian London, vampires, werewolves and slasher gangs stalk the night and a man made partly of metal is about to discover just how far he’ll go to protect the woman he loves…

After a vicious vampire attack left him struggling to leash the dark urges of the craving virus, John “Rip” Doolan thinks he’s finally starting to master the darkness within. The only thing that threatens to shatter his hard-won control is Esme, his closest friend and the only woman he’s ever wanted. If the stubborn beauty ever realized precisely what was going through his mind, their friendship would be ruined.

For six months, Esme has waited for Rip to recover and take her as his thrall, not daring to hope for more. Too afraid to put her heart on the line, she is devastated when Rip reveals that he never had any intentions of making her his.

But when a savage gang of Slashers start causing havoc in Whitechapel, Rip and Esme have no choice. They must face up to the depth of the passion that burns between them and forge a new relationship…or risk losing each other forever.

Thoughts

Wow was this novella intense and awesome. And amazing. And fun. There is just something about the world of London Steampunk that draws me in completely. Is kind of unforgettable. And makes me travel to my happy, literary nerd place. It’s just impossible to put down.

I’m really glad that Esme and Rip got their own story in this series. Their relationship and journey was left a little too open-ended at the conclusion of Kiss of Steel. So finding their happily ever after? That was just gorgeous. And, of course, since it’s a thrilling little novella, it couldn’t be easy and simple. Couldn’t just go with what you wanted to happen… I feel like I should be more annoyed by that. But I just absolutely loved the journey.

I love that although this is a steampunk romance and about Esme and Rip, the main storyline was actually a battle against another evil character. Or at least, that’s how it felt to me. I loved trying to find out how and when the bad guy was going to get his comeuppance. And the fact that it coincided with Esme and Rip trying to figure out how to coexist with Rip’s new abilities… well, it was just thrilling.

Synopsis

Kat Danilo’s childhood turned tragic when her sister become the victim of a serial killer. Years later, she gets a chance at justice when she discovers she’s the daughter of Lancelot, vampire knight of the Round Table. But first, she’s got to convince a handsome vampire warrior that she’s worthy to gain the magical powers that are her birthright—powers that might help her find her sister’s killer.

If the murderer doesn’t find her first….

Thoughts

My first ever Mageverse story! I’ve been looking at this series for a while, because, quite frankly, I’m just intrigued by the idea of a series based on vampires that are also knights of the round table. And this completely lived up to all of my expectations! I’ve read a novella or two of Knight’s which are just lustful enough for me to be happy. And this kept up that trend. But you know… it added in this idea of vampires, werewolves, witches and Camelot. What girl (or person, however you want to approach this) wouldn’t fall madly in love?

As with many novellas, this was a great, quick, easy and quite lustful read. Which, of course, is exactly what the doctor ordered. Or at least, that’s the case in my crazy, happy mind. The attraction between the two leads is there from the very beginning, although, it does take them a little while to build up to it. In my opinion, I much prefer this – don’t get the whole insta love thing. But I digress. I love that although they’re both attracted from the beginning, and the story does centre on this… it’s not what made me want to keep reading. Don’t get me wrong, the romance was freaking fantastic. But the mystery of what was wrong with Christmas and what happened in the past… I was so much more intrigued by that.

Both Kat and Ridge have a tragic history in this story. Yet, it’s Kat’s that really drew me in. Her not well mother, her lost sister and the mystery that surrounds everything was seriously difficult to put down. The fact that you find out in the opening moments that she’s also Lancelot’s daughter… I just had to know more!

Synopsis

They’ve discovered the Santa is a vampire. What these two young Russian undead don’t realise is that he’s ancient for a reason. And really not interested in their help…

Thoughts

Any story that starts with a discussion about how Santa is a vampire is going to draw me in and make me incredibly happy from the very beginning. There is just something about the idea that is both sensical and terrifying. Definitely funny though. Especially the way in which it’s described…

As much as I loved Santa being a vampire, the part of this story I loved the most was that it featured African Painted Dogs. I absolutely adore those endangered creatures and the fact that they take out Santa’s reindeer… might be one of the more perfect stories I’ve read. It was just brilliant.

This is definitely one of those stories which takes our traditional tales and gives them a completely absurd spin. One that makes a weird kind of sense and makes you not really want to think about the original for a little time. Especially when even Rudolph gets a disturbing supernatural spin in this story!

Synopsis

Hannah just wants to have a nice Christmas for once. But she’s working with the man who broke her hear last Christmas to take down a crazy, vampire killer. So things might not quite go as planned.

Thoughts

I just spent most of Christmas alone. And I have a partner, so it just made me sappy and missing him. This sentiment was beautifully echoed in this story. Alright, Hannah doesn’t actually have a partner. And she was dumped the previous Christmas, but that yearning for the one that you love on Christmas Eve… I get that. However, this story was made far more sucky by the fact that Hannah is forced to spend the evening on a case with her ex. That would be seriously sucky.

Being Australian, I’ve never really dealt with people who collect for charities on the road. Or really anybody who stands around in some kind of weird elf outfit ringing a bell for money. So I can’t really imagine it. Having said that, apparently there’s a vampire running around killing the people who choose to do this. Which was a much more fun story than the central romance. The romance was fun, but I liked the chases through the dark cemetery to catch the culprit in a little elf’s outfit much, much more.

As much as I enjoyed the romance in this story… I kind of thought that Hannah was a little too forgiving. They both knew that she was going to forgive Brodie. But it would have been a little more exciting if she actually made him grovel and apologise. That might just be my own drives though.

Synopsis

Lena’s discovered a family secret. But now she has a huge decision to make. How will it affect her future?

Thoughts

This is a great short story filler between the activities of Kiss of Steel and Heart of Iron. Or at least, that’s what it feels like to me. A sort of prologue before you get into the next novel. Which I plan on doing soon… very, very excited. I just need to actually get Heart of Iron to put on my shelves. Luckily I have Tarnished Knight in the meantime.

This short story provides some great foreshadowing to the greater series. It hints at the problems to come. Although, there’s not a great storyline throughout. Lena finally discovers the family secret, finally makes a move on Will and then has to actually deal with the consequences of her actions.

Will is also kind of stupid. Which seems to be the trend with men in many of the romances that I read. He’s a moron who is trying to protect a wilting flower. And I’m looking forward to him discovering the fact that Lena isn’t some precious gem, and getting a well deserved kick up the butt.

Synopsis

WHEN NOWHERE IS SAFE
Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries – no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood-craving he’s been quicker, stronger, almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel – or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

Thoughts

I got about halfway through this book over a year ago. But it was in eBook format, which I always struggle with, so I decided to buy the physical copy and enjoy it that way. Then it sat on my shelf for an untold length of time (actually, it was about a year, but I digress). And after just ripping through this, I’m wondering why I left it just sitting there for so damn long! This is a great steampunk romance that draws you straight in and is a really easy read. The thing that I got most excited about with this though… the author is an Aussie. So now I know that I have to buy the entire series. Because Aussie.

I have a lot of vampire books. And I have a lot of steampunk books. I have never read a story which combines the two. And then adds in romance. Which was really amazing. I loved the idea of both steampunk and vampires. Romance and a little bit of clockwork. Alright, this isn’t as intensely steampunk as some of the other books on that shelf. But it still has that fantastic flavour. And although this is a romance, it’s not as intensely romantic and lustful as many of the other books in that section of my shelves. A great balance all round.

There is a lot of backstory and tragedy to the characters in this. Even, the secondaries have a heap of backstory. Whilst the secondaries don’t really have theirs shared, the slow unravelling of Blade and Honoria’s secrets and hurts was enthralling. There was just enough of a hint that something else was going on that I found it impossible to put down. Plus, their constant dance of almost getting together made me want to know WHEN.

The leads in this story aren’t perfect, they’re wonderfully flawed. And I always love a great, flawed hero. Honoria, although tough needs to get out of her own headspace and realise that while she’s smart, she’s also kind of blinded and dumb about things. Something that I have in common with her… and Blade, he’s kind of beautiful, but also unwilling to bend and change to suit another person’s needs. Which kind of makes them a perfect couple – both irritatingly stubborn, but intrinsically caring.

Synopsis

She just wants to go home and curl up on the couch. But then a man walks in and tells her that she is his long-lost soulmate… resurrected. And then she meets his brother… things are about to get very interesting.

Thoughts

This story literally made me laugh out loud. It woke my dog up because he couldn’t figure why I was making weird, random noises. Occasionally I’ll giggle a little bit at whatever I’m reading. But an outright guffaw? Not something I tend to do very frequently at all. And when I’m reading a short story? Never. I just don’t get drawn in quick enough to justify an outright laugh. Until I read this story obviously. Maybe it was being overtired, but I choose to think that there was just enough of a dry humour moment in it to have me giggling.

Although I do believe in soul mates, I love that the lead female in this has zero belief whatsoever. It makes it even better when a vampire is trying to convince her that she’s the reincarnation of his own long-lost love… it just makes this story even more humorous. A story all about finding your soul mate… when the woman in question doesn’t even believe in the idea. A beautiful, fun little paradox there.

I seem to be picking up on ideas of karma quite a bit in the stories I’ve been reading lately. But I actually enjoyed the karma in this a little bit more than I expected. Especially when you find out what the bad woman has been reincarnated as… not sure how that works into the ideas of soul mates… but it was certainly entertaining!

Synopsis

Elise hasn’t felt anything since her fiance attacked her. But, a chance encounter with a demon possessed man could help her. With help from Menchares, she might just find a way to her happily ever after.

Thoughts

This year I’ve managed to read a few Night Huntress novels and each time, I fall a little bit more in love with the series. There is just something amazingly engaging and fun about it! But, what I got really, really excited about in this novella – it’s the first story so far in the series which features a demon! Not sure why, but that was a ridiculously exciting moment for me…

Although this story isn’t actually about Bones and Cat, they do still make their appearance. Which was much appreciated. Albeit, only briefly. But enough to give a great sense of continuity whilst you’re barracking for another couple and another supernatural difficulty. There’s nothing like spending a half hour to quickly revisit some characters and a world that you weren’t entirely sure you were missing… actually, mostly I was kind of disappointed that it was over.

Mencheres also makes a great appearance in this story. It’s nice to visit him after the occurrences in At Grave’s End. His was a bit of a tragic story, and you can feel the scars left on him – I look forward to getting to know this character more as the series develops.

But mostly, I just loved this novella because it was about a reclusive woman finding a way to live, love and exist again. I’m always a big fan of stories which feature a character overcoming the shit in their past and finding their own happily ever after… which happens in this. A great little read for late at night, after a long, horrible day…
