Synopsis

Sometimes it’s better not to typecast people too much…

Thoughts

You could kind of see how this story was going to end in the first few sentences. For starters, the title is Typecast, it implies the fitting of certain roles to an idea. Specifically when you are introduced to a casting director in LA. And one that is hunting for the perfect serial killer…

I loved the ending of this story. It was kind of scary, but a little funny. The pushy, overbearing LA casting director following a man who would play the perfect serial killer… yeah, how do you think that that one will end?

Synopsis

This short story gives a whole new definition to the term still life painting.

Thoughts

This is an incredibly short story. And when I started reading it, I was wondering what part of painting an apple would make it part of a blood thirsty collection. When I figured it out, I was honestly a little grossed out and freaked. Which is why I gave it a slightly higher rating than I probably would have normally… it surprised me and made me feel weird.

Actually, it made me feel so weird that I can’t really find many more words to say…

Synopsis

A man is breaking and entering a house to take his pleasure in the bodies of those who live there. There’s just one problem… his memory.

Thoughts

I’ve seen dementia and short term memory loss used as a humorous anecdote, as a sad trial, as a hurdle that someone has to challenge or overcome. I have never read about it being used in a horror story. I’ve also never been so freaked out by the idea of someone with short term memory loss. But, Pyle has definitely managed to change that for me.

Creepy men jumping fences late at night is never a good beginning to a story. Said men then breaking and entering with evil thoughts on their mind… you can kind of see where the tale is going. Until things change and you can’t… this short story took a twist that I was completely not expecting. And I think that that combined with the short term memory aspect of this story… I didn’t sleep for a day after reading this!

Synopsis

Two young couples travel to a haunted bed and breakfast to have a scary night. They get exactly what they expect… and more.

Thoughts

I read this short story before going to bed. Mistake! I hate dolls, mannequins and anything generally humanoid that doesn’t quite make it. Mannequins are kind of at the top of this list. So a horror story about mannequins coming to life… yeah, it was not a good idea to read before turning off the lights.

Two young couples decide to go to a B and B to scare themselves silly. It’s a joke that quickly turns serious. And although it’s about the couples getting scared silly, Graham managed to take me along for the ride too. After all, there’s something slightly creepy about mannequins, and serial killers, and really bed and breakfasts in general…

This isn’t a short story for people who don’t like to get a slight goosebump when they’re reading…you’ve been warned.

Synopsis

The setting of an apocumentary run by the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Thoughts

I like the way that this tale is set – as though it’s a documentary of a reunion tour for a band. Except that this band is the four men of the apocalypse. And the tour is taking place in a hotel where everyone is dead.

This really reminds me of the few documentaries I’ve seen (or even some mocumentaries) about bands and their tours. Especially some of the banter and downright absurd comments that each of the horsemen make… maybe the apocalypse just isn’t that close after all.

Synopsis

Somebody’s feeding on the frustrations of those at a airport with delayed flights. But the real question is, who wants to feed on him?

Thoughts

This short story made me feel sick. To be fair, it could have been me getting car sick. Because I was reading this in the car. On windy roads. Late at night. But, I’m pretty sure that I felt sick because this story kind of freaked me out.

It started off innocently enough. Weird alien feeding off of people’s emotions. The veritable smorgasbord of an airport. The added deliciousness of cancelled flights and the stress that this brings. But, then things take a far more incidious turn… he finds someone with no emotions.

You can  kind of see where this goes… packed airport, guy with no emotions, seedy motel… yeah, there’s a reason that I felt a little crook after reading this short story in the dark, on a windy road, in the middle of nowhere…

Synopsis

Is Elliot about to become the editor for a dead woman? Or is something more sinister happening in the office?

Thoughts

The harsh critiques of editors and readers is something that I think we all fear. So what happens when there is a horror of a writer and the editor is forced to constantly deal with her ghost?

This story started out kind of nice. It had a ghost and one of the first lines is ding dong the bitch is dead. So it feels like it might be a bit of a comedic take on the idea of the editor-writer relationship. Until things take a much more sinister turn. And more ghosts start appearing. And you realise that Elliot, the editor, may not have been as kind as you first thought… karma can be a bitch too.

Synopsis

The third book in the hilarious and horrifying national bestselling anthology series from the Horror Writers Association–a frightfest of sidesplitting stories from such “New York Times” bestselling authors as Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Heather Graham, L.A. Banks, Kelley Armstrong, and many more! Horror fiction explores the dark side of human nature, often pushing the limits of violence, graphic gore, and extreme emotions. But with the popularity of shows and movies, such as “The Walking Dead,” “True Blood,” “Twilight,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” audiences have demonstrated their love for the genre–especially accompanied with a dose of humor to tone down the terror.

“Blood Lite III: Aftertaste” continues to put the fun back into dark fiction, featuring a wide range of humorous and highly entertaining horror-filled tales. Edited by Horror Writers Association founding member and award-winning author Kevin J. Anderson, the stories vary in tone from wry to downright laugh-out-loud funny. Featuring such well-known horror writers as Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Christopher Golden, and many others, this collection of tales is perfect for anyone who enjoys being entertained as much as they love a good scare.

Thoughts

I bought this book because it had two short stories from series that I’m reading. And then I figured that since it was an ebook, it was a good one to read before bed, instead of keeping my partner awake with the bedside lamp on. I’m still not sure of how I feel about this collection. It was certainly an easy read, but maybe not one that I will pick up again in a heart beat.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book is the variety of tones and feelings that you can find throughout. Some stories are downright funny. And some completely terrifying. There are ads, tales and scripts. Every different style and story takes you on a completely different and unexpected journey. And it has certainly given me a lot of new authors to find out more about… if I had enough time to chase down every single one that is.

Although I won’t be rereading Blood Lite III anytime soon, I will certainly be getting the other two Blood Lite collections to expand my knowledge and enjoyment of the authors who like to write about things that go bump in the night.

Synopsis

Mr. Lovaas wants to find the ultimate collectible, but when he does, he gets more than he bargained for…

Thoughts

This story gave me the goosebumps. It was grotesque, creepy and so open ended that you could imagine the villain coming for you in the dark of night. The fact that it featured a nerd who refused to leave his apartment and hunted for the epitome of horrifying collectibles… it somehow made it all the more creepy.

I don’t know if there is something in this story that highlights our obsession with immortality or our materialistic tendencies, but it feels like it lingers. Yet, mostly, for me, this story is riddled with goosebump-giving passages that make me cringe. And I’m kind of glad that it was just a short story.
