Thoughts

Of course Max is going to be the first Honey Badger to fall for a damn cat – she’s just as contrary and difficult as any feline that I’ve ever come across. I love that she manages to find a cat who doesn’t know what he is. Then kind of adopt him, then just… decide that she might like him a little. Meanwhile, Zé is just following her around in a bit of a daze. And then, in the most catlike way possible, just decides that he’s going to keep Max, whether she likes it or not. The bemusement and the lack of courtship throughout this story was so very Max, and had me laughing again and again throughout.

I found the concept of Zé not knowing what he is to be a really interesting spin. I love that it’s Max of all people who has to introduce him to the world. And that it’s her sisters who really drive her to actually being kind to the poor guy. That girl has no chill and is completely unhinged, so having her be the one to introduce someone to a whole new world was quite frankly hilarious. I also love that, when Zé realises that his grandfather actually knows about this world and Honey Badgers, Max just takes it in hand and gives them the vessel / avenue throughout which to reconnect.

One of my favourite moments in Badger to the Bone, even in the reread is when Stevie announces that Max is not a psychopath because she can feel love. The fact that Max laughs in Mairi’s face and mocks her for not having love in her life just furthers this assessment. I really loved how Max’s shining light and reason for living is really her sisters. And although she’s not exactly the safest of bets, it’s her love for her sisters that keeps her grounded. It’s also what makes her walk from her mother and remind everyone that she has morals and a code that she lives by. Even when it’s a bit unhinged.

I had honestly forgotten all about the Black Malones (I don’t know how), and their psychotic little sister. I’m so glad that I loved them just as much in the reread. They are hilarious and fit perfectly in with the insanity that is the Honey Badger Chronicles. Then there is Max’s basketball team – again, a bunch of women who are just brimming with chaos, violence and total craziness. Now I can’t wait to dive into the next Honey Badger Chronicles book and get to know Max’s friends that much better…

Thoughts

Shen and Stevie are an absolutely adorable couple that had me smiling and laughing throughout their entire story. And, honestly, even with this being my second (maybe third) read through of this book, I still loved it just as much as the first time. It was adorable, funny and filled with violence. Definitely the kind of story that I will continue to reread again and again and again. Plus, Stevie is absolutely insane, and Shen just… rolls with the crazy that she brings into his life. A fantastic couple that I want to keep diving into in the future.

For me, In a Badger Way is all about Stevie learning to love every aspect of herself. I mean, the girl oozes self confidence, but when you get to her story, you realise that she’s actually wracked with insecurities. Mostly because she’s fearful of all the many, many different ways in which she can annihilate the world. And terrify others, and just how horrible that must feel. I love that her insecurities are based on her compassion for others. But, I love even more that she finally figures out how to accept herself for all of her insanity. And chaos, and just love her whole terrifying being.

Alongside the insanity of the honey badgers, I have seriously enjoyed diving back into Laurenston’s shapeshifter romances. They are just hilarious and a whole lot of fun. I particularly have the image of them just grabbing the soccer ball in games and… rolling around with them. I’ve seen pandas do this on the many videos I’ve watched, so the idea of shapeshifter pandas doing such a thing? Adorable and all around hilarious. Plus, then there’s the systematic destruction of everyone’s comfort zone when Shen chooses to just… chew on bamboo. I also love that where everyone else finds Shen’s chewing off-putting, the consistency of the noise is actually calming for Shen.

Through all of the insanity that is the MacKilligan Sisters, I love that Shen just… rolls with all of the crazy. I mean, he does kind of loose his cool when Stevie just repeatedly tells him that she’s decided that he’s her boyfriend. And, ultimately that they love each other. I mean, she’s not wrong, but Shen’s confusion at her decision making process just makes everything about this story that much more hilarious and enjoyable. Ultimately, I just love the MacKilligan sisters and will continue rereading their stories again and again. Just because it entertains me like no tomorrow.

Thoughts

Even though this is my second read through, Hot and Badgered is just as brilliant, fun, hilarious and impossible to put down as the first time. There’s a reason why Hot and Badgered got my completely hooked on Laurenston and her brilliant approach to paranormal romances. I may have enjoyed this ridiculously on my first read, but now that I’ve also read the Pride series, I have so much more appreciation for the different cameos throughout and how Laurenston has been able to build such a fun and engaging world to dive into. It was fun before, but now it is even better!!!

The MacKilligan sister might all be certifiably insane, but I love the love and care that Charlie shows her somewhat out of control siblings. Charlie might be the matriarch of their little band, but she’s also longing for love and a place to call home. I love that she’s learnt a thousand ways to protect her siblings, and yet, at the core of her behaviours, it’s all about creating home, family and a safe space. The constant stress baking, the dogs and the willingness to set down roots with someone she truly cares about are all drives that I recognise. It’s always enjoyable to connect to a character in the most random of ways – and Charlie’s willingness to put her family first whilst stress baking is ridiculously recognisable.

On rereading this and remembering how much I love this story, there is something that I’m somewhat concerned about – the series and books that I’m obsessing over at the moment tend to be romances. With a whole lot of violence. And killing. And blood. I’m not sure how concerned I should be about this latest obsession. Some of the murder and violence is caused by Charlie, but, enjoyably, she mostly spends this story finishing the violence. The fact that it’s done in a really matter of fact, no dramas fashion just added to my enjoyment and entertainment. But seriously, so much violence.

There are some series that you just reread almost yearly… they are a pleasant diversion from real life and layered enough that you find something new with each read through. There’s a reason that Hot and Badgered is quickly making it onto that list… it is fun and light in some ways. But there is enough drama and angst that I just didn’t want to put it down. Plus, then there’s the many different threads throughout which link to other stories in the Laurenston universe. Now I can’t wait to dive into Max’s story again in In a Badger Way.

Thoughts

Max and her team of insane honey badgers are absolutely, totally and utterly freaking fantastic. I mean, they are completely ridiculous and insanely violent, which I love. And then the whole finding their forever partners who want to put up with the ridiculousness and go along for the ride… priceless. Plus, aggressive mayhem and honey badgers – I’m never not going to love that combination.

Tock and her inability to even quite fit in with the rest of the honey badgers is brilliant. I love that she literally makes her own app to keep track of time and her scheduling. I mean, I feel how frustrating this is, and wish that I had her app. And ability to actually keep to whatever schedule I plan. Plus, she just embraces the fact that she’s a little abnormal, and uses it to freak people out and make her escapes… something that I honestly do myself. Frequently.

Shay is so completely calm and sane, which I feel like is necessary for someone who loves an insane honey badger. I love that Tock manages to also fall for one of the few men who is unable to keep any concept of time. She is so regimented, and he doesn’t really care where he is or when. They are completely enjoyable and fun opposites attract. Plus, it’s just fun to have Tock getting so completely out of control and frustrated every time Shay decides to just meander along.

Shay’s daughter, Dani, is completely adorable and I love that she is happily able to bond with Tock over STEM. That, and they agree that Stevie just shouldn’t be involved in the tutoring. Because Stevie is nuts and still completely capable of taking over the world… plus, there’s the fact that Tock is able to help Dani reinforce when she says the word “no”. I love how the girls in Shay’s life bond over STEM and telling a boy no… consent and STEM. Two incredibly important things for young women to learn.

Now that I’ve read Born to Be Badger, I’ve decided that I’ll probably need to reread the Honey Badger Chronicles and Pride series. Just because they’re hilarious, and I love doing rereads amongst all of my reading – revisiting beloved worlds is relaxing and enjoyable in a whole other way.

Thoughts

I absolutely love honey badgers. I have since I went to South Africa and was introduced to the reality that these awesome buggers exist on planet earth. Finding this series which features shapeshifting honey badgers hits all of my happy points. And this next instalment in the series just didn’t disappoint! Particularly since, after being introduced to Mads and all of the basketball team in Badger to the Bone, I’ve been wanting to know more about all five of the insane women. And now you get to.

Mads and the rest of the team are the ultimate girl power team. A group of independent women who have each others’ backs. But also let each other be the independent and brilliant women that they each are. Alright, some of this is because they’re all certifiably insane, and like to steal things… and just do all sorts of dodgy behaviours. But it’s also just all about support. And love. Even if Mads spends the entire time calling them her “teammates” and not her friends…

There was also the fact that Mads’ love interest is one of the Black Malones. Which would have been interesting enough on its own (now I need to read Bear Meets Girl to get to know other branches of the Malone family, but I digress). But, other than the three brothers who are definitely freaky and seriously stubborn, you also get to know their half-sister. Yet another completely nuts MacKilligan sister. Nat is going to be great when she finally gets her own story. I love that all of the interconnectedness and relationships in this world continue to build upon one another. Totally unforgettable.

Mads and Finn are a really cute couple. I found that this story was a whole lot more about the rest of the team and introducing a whole new set of players that are going to be important in future books. But, I still enjoyed the ease with which they built their relationship. Sometimes it’s nice to have the relationship development nice and easy, with the dramas of other relationships being the primary obstacles. I can’t believe I now have to wait another few months for Born to Be Badger to be released…

Thoughts

Like ever other book in this series, or, indeed, by this author, Badger to the Bone is freaking hilarious. It’s witty, cute, fun and humorous. Although, I did have a bit of a moment of regret – this is the last romance of the three MacKilligan sisters. But, it did also introduce Max’s basketball team and those four women also need their own stories, so I have another rabbit hole to dive into. Very, very happily.

As much as Max is totally a psycho, I’ve been dying to read about her since the prologue in Hot and Badgered. I loved getting more of an insight into just why she acts the way that she does. Particularly in her relationship with Stevie – finally, the way that Max is constantly aggravating her begins to make sense. Plus, Max is the only full honey badger of the three siblings, and this difference was incredibly fun to read about.

I love that although you know that Max is chaos personified, she is actually kind of a do-gooder. She hides it really, really well. And she refuses to let others in on her goodness. That, and the fact that although Max thinks that Charlie is unaware of many of her extracurricular activities, the older sibling is still completely in tune about the insanity that is her younger sister. Yet another amazing sibling moment that had me grinning from ear to ear.

ZeZe is a great counterpoint to the insanity that is Max. Where Max is just pure chaos and happy in her own skin, she is also a serious handful. ZeZe, being entirely cat is quite happy to just stand back and watch the insanity unfold. With humour. And feeling entertained. Much like a real cat would I imagine. His smugness and contentment (once he accepts what he actually is) made me an incredibly happy woman.

ZeZe’s journey in this, whilst totally overshadowed by my love for Max was fun. I love the idea that he doesn’t actually know that he’s a shapeshifter and anything about fitting into the world that he should have been born into. Likewise, the relationship with his grandfather is a little bit tender, but ultimately beautiful. A reminder that sometimes people do the wrong things for love. And a great way to get more and more glimpses into Laurenston’s world of shapeshifters. Now I just need to keep diving into these amazing stories.

Thoughts

I must admit, I’m kind of completely obsessed with the Honey Badger Chronicles, because… well, honey badgers. But also, Laurenston writes amazing romances that are filled with wonderful friendships, strong women and a whole lot of humour. They make me smile with every single page turned and leave me incredibly happy that I’ve had the pleasure of discovering such amazing books. The fact that this continues to follow the MacKilligan sisters, who are most certifiably insane and completely lovely, well, that made me dive right in. Actually, it took me a little while to actually get to this – because I can’t seem to put these books down once I start reading them.

I love that this story is about Stevie, who is most definitely the most neurotic of the MacKilligan sisters. I particularly enjoyed that she just… decides that Shen is her boyfriend. He is such a chilled being and kind of just meanders along. The dichotomy between Stevie’s intensity and inability to relax, and Shen’s calm nature worked really well in this relationship. It was fun getting to know another species of shapeshifter in this series – Shen’s enjoyment in upsetting the other bears with his bamboo chomping in particular. There’s also the way that, although Shen is so damn calm all the time, he is also not exactly the kind of being that you want to mess with… kind of making him the perfect laid back balance to Stevie’s high-strung reality and tendency to find herself in dangerous situations.

Stevie’s other form is definitely terrifying and intense – as demonstrated in Hot and Badgered. It was thoroughly enjoyable getting to know more about just what Stevie is capable of in this form. And just how much damage she can truly do. Although, the moment when she realises that she is actually a badass with DNA that eats other DNA… I thought this was freaking fantastic. And may have laughed for a good minute after reading this. Stevie’s ability to finally accept a part of herself that she’s both feared and reviled was a really nice moment. Definitely gently helped along by Shen’s quiet presence, but also just finally growing enough to realise that just because you’re scary, it doesn’t mean you’re bad.

This might have been a romance about Stevie and Shen, but, yet again, it’s the MacKilligan sisters and their honey badger kin that really steal the show. I genuinely loved the parts where everyone attends a honey badger funeral… there’s a truck vs. badger collision, Charlie wanting to kill her father (again), and a whole bunch of snakes thrown into the mix. It’s not quite what I expected, but fits in completely with the idea of honey badgers being certifiable, down to the last one. I honestly don’t want to stop reading about any and all of the crazy honey badgers that are running rampant through this series. But, it’s not just the honey badgers that steal the show, it’s all of the sibling pairs. Laurenston has a wonderful way of writing about sibling relationships which just feels genuine – there’s loving and affectionate antics, but also those that are about just pushing each others’ buttons, because that’s always fun. I’m honestly hoping that Shen’s, Berg’s and Kyle’s siblings all get their own stories as this series continues on….

This was such an amazing paranormal romance. Not just for the wonderful, steamy sex. The beautifully matched couple. But also the high jinx and shenanigans. Every time I read one of the wonderful stories written by Laurenston, I’m transported to a wonderful world that has me smiling and laughing. Also having all the feelings, because that’s what you should always have in a good romance.

Thoughts

I have to admit that I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with honey badgers, like I’m kind of ridiculously obsessed with the silly things. So when I found out that there’s literally a paranormal romance / shapeshifter series which features honey badgers… I don’t know if I’ve ever been quite this happy in my life. And that was before I had the pleasure of actually reading this book. When I found out that the shapeshifters featured in this book were also sisters, and ones who are none to be incredibly chaotic… so many of my happy buttons were pushed.

Throughout this I honestly couldn’t stop laughing out loud at the shenanigans of the MacKilligan sisters. I mean, the first time you meet them, one is jumping out of a bedroom window, and the other runs a man over… multiple times. Then, to complete this chaotic trio, you have a panic attack prone genius who thinks a stay at a mental health institution is a nice holiday. And that’s just the character introductions in the first few chapters. The more supporting cast that you get to meet, the more insanity unfolds. I honestly can’t believe that this is an author who hasn’t been on my shelves yet. One that I can’t wait to read more of in the future.

I can’t wait for more of the MacKilligan sisters’ insanity as this series unfolds. The series most definitely starts out with the sanest of the three – Charlie spends most of her time running around trying to stop the other two from just killing everyone. I’ve got one younger sister that I keep an eye out for, and she doesn’t have homicidal tendencies – I can’t imagine watching two who are definitely insane. Charlie is a ridiculously fun lead, one who doesn’t hesitate to be herself and finds a way to carve out her own happily ever after.

Although this story is a romance between Berg and Charlie, for me it was about the relationship between the sisters. There is something great about a well written family bond, and Laurenston has the exasperation and love pegged perfectly in this story. Berg and Charlie are also a fantastic couple that you are rooting for from the very beginning, but there’s just something about the three sisters. There’s also the fact that being bought into Berg’s life brings along a whole cast of characters who I want to get to know even better. Berg’s two triplet siblings being some of them. I’m hoping that the more I dive into the world of Laurenston, the more I will get to meet different members of this world. All of whom have a whole lot of humour and sass in their creation.
