Synopsis

Imardin is a city of dark intrigues and deadly politics, where those who wield magic wield power. Into this established order has blundered a young street-girl with extraordinary magical gifts. Adopted by the Magicians’ Guild, her life is changed for ever – but for better or for worse?

Sonea knew that she’d face a tough time training within the Magicians’ Guild, but she little realised the level of animosity she would face from her fellow novices. The sons and daughters of the most powerful families in the realm, her classmates seem determined to see her fail – at whatever cost. But in accepting the protection of the guild’s high lord, Sonea may have embraced a far bleaker fate. For High Lord Akkarin harbours a secret that is far darker than his magician’s robes.

Thoughts

I hate, hate, hate bullying – in all of its forms. And the bullying that characterises most of Sonea’s journey throughout The Novice, made me feel physically ill, and incredibly angry. Yet, this look inside the depths to which some people’s prejudices will sink made this an amazing story to read. The backdrop of confusion and fear that Sonea feels at becoming a magician, and knowing the High Lord’s dirty little secret (which is not so little) help to further this amazing storyline. The moment I finished this novel, I cracked the spine of The High Lord in excitement. After all, while Sonea is able to overcome some of the difficulties of being a novice, the greatest threat to her existence is still around.

The Novice highlights the differences that people feel and show around those of a different social standing. Almost as though where you are born and where you come from are choices. Especially when it is considered that those of the higher families are “bought down” by any and all association with a slum girl. This prejudice, although obviously expanded upon throughout The Novice is present in all of our lives, and Sonea’s ability to rise above this and not stoop to the levels which are expected of her are admirable. But, it is easy to see that even those who have no firsthand knowledge of her and ability to judge her integrity, are willing to believe blatant lies, just because she is of a lower social standing. The fear mongering that is constantly taking place throughout the story lead to a number of horrible, cringe worthy incidents that made my blood boil. Yet, throughout it all, it is Sonea’s willingness to stay true to herself and honest that helps her to triumph in the end.

The complex characters throughout The Novice make it easy for everyone to relate to at least one character throughout the story. Although I was mostly interested in Sonea’s plight, Dannyl’s journey of discovery quickly drew me in. Not only is he constantly searching for new knowledge in the name of research, but he is ultimately forced to face a part of himself that has been long buried. Again, it is the prejudices of others that enforced this journey to be necessary. And I can’t wait to see how the rest of it unfolds in The High Lord.

Synopsis

The Mad Apprentice follows the story of Lord Tagin, and his sister, Lady Indria. It narrates how he learnt Black Magic without the approval of his mentor, who he later killed. As the story develops, Tagin starts killing every magician who tried to stop him, along with many non-magicians and animals alike.

Thoughts

Throughout The Black Magician Trilogy, black magic is seen as something horrible. Indeed, throughout the majority of books centring on mages and witchcraft, the idea of black magic is an antithema. After all, the idea of taking someone else’s life force to further your own means is quite a horrible idea. And, so it is with Trudi Canavan’s Black Magician World The Mad Apprentice investigates what happens when someone unstable harness such a questionable wealth of power.

This story was going to have a bad ending right from the beginning. Indria’s fear of her brother, and discomfort at his very presence in the first page hint at underlying issues that bode ill. His admittance of murder and Indria’s obviously misguided belief that she is able to steer him to a saner choice just build upon the feeling of disquiet.

There is something that is eerie about people with power, who appear sane, but have a kind of madness inside. The idea that a mad man can be a highly intelligent and capable one is all the more terrifying. After all, this is what serial killers and murders (such as Tagin) tend to be like – intelligent, and more than a little mad.

Synopsis

A young man goes on the strangest fishing trip in the Western Highlands. He thinks he’s returning for his father, but things take a completely unexpected turn.

Thoughts

This short story was nothing like I expected. Although, from the title, I’m really not quite sure what I expected – something about going fishing and catching a ginormous fish I suppose? Well, other than the very conclusion, there was really nothing at all about fishing in the story. But, before you begin to feel disappointed about such a lack, the amazing writing and unique journey that Nix takes you on in The Strange Fishing in the Western Highlands is well worth the journey.

Primarily, I loved the voice and the tone used to tell this story. As someone who writes, I know that it can be really hard to tell an entire story from one person’s point of view – and to keep to their voice consistent throughout. Yet, it was easy to follow the chief protagonist’s tale, and within the first two sentences, I felt immediately connected with him. His naivety, confusion and eventual acceptance of the mysterious history of the Western Highlands shines from the pages and makes this an immensely enjoyable read.

Synopsis

Good friends are important to everyone, but sometimes you mostly just need the help of old friends.

Thoughts

There’s nothing like old friends.

I loved the reminder that no matter how far you travel, or where you go in life – old friends will always be there for you. When they can. Nix’s fantasy spin on this message was just perfect. It is incredibly difficult to describe just how fantastic this short story was. I loved the message of friendship and the main character’s desperation to reconnect with people from his past. And the eventual way in which they were reunited made it easy to realise that just how important and integral friends are to our existence.

Yet, all is not as it seems – there is a great and unpredictable twist to the end of the story and although it is kind of perfect, it certainly wasn’t what I expected.

Synopsis

Welcome to the Book of Dreams

It has been brought to our attention that you seem to be completely lost. If you wish to come to know what it is that constantly eludes you in life… I am your transport to seek within.

Kyle is a young man with no future, and no past. Orphaned from a young age, he uses tough upbringing as an excuse for his lack of direction in life. But a mysterious parcel is about to change his view of himself, his parents, and the world in which he lives.

An old leather bound book, intricately embossed with creatures and strange beings, is left on Kyle’s doorstep with no card or note attached. The book issues Kyle a personal challenge – to finish reading the book and face the innermost truth about himself, or forfeit any chance of finding his true destiny.

If the book was left on your doorstep and you had nothing to lose, could you resist reading on?

Thoughts

I often find it difficult to find a good, solid story that has an Indigenous Australian lead. In fact, Book of Dreams has so far been the only such story. I’m constantly searching for new ones, and the fact that Harding was able to write a tale that paints a minority group in a good light and highlights some of their daily difficulties was amazing. Yet, although the Indigenous aspect of this writing is phenomenal, it is also the spiritual knowledge that is imparted throughout that has made me fall in love with this novel again and again and again.

Harding writes some very subtle, yet insightful tales of our own power to govern change in our lives. The overarching tale within Book of Dreams is about taking your past, present and future and gaining control over it. Although Kyle is dealt an incredibly crappy hand in life, he is able to (eventually) understand that these experiences cannot be a basis on which to build a horrible existence. Bitterness and anger at the past is not a way to continue to live, and it isn’t until he accepts the past for what it is and begins the process of healing that he is able to find a new life, love and reason for being.

I’ve studied Native Title in Australia through a few of my University courses, and it is always a fascinating area and discussion. Harding’s grasp of this legislation is great, and her bibliography at the end of the story attests to the fact that she has done her research in regards to this sensitive topic. Yet, it is the fact that she is able to find a way in her happy ending to re-grant rights to traditional lands when native title has been extinguished that is most enjoyable. After all, who doesn’t love a happy ending?

Synopsis

A young girl rescues an ugly bird like creature. Mimic is a wonderful companion. But, one day, when the village is threatened, Mimic’s miraculous transformation might just save them all.

Thoughts

This is an incredibly sweet little story. It is about a girl who doesn’t quite want to grow up, and the power of our connection to nature. Both aspects of which I can relate to entirely. After all, who really wants to grow up and take on the mantle of responsibility?

The act of saving those less fortunate than you, and protecting the weak is such a recurring theme in Tamora Pierce’s writing. And, Mimic is no different. Ri’s willingness to take care of even the most ugly of creatures may have put her at odds with her grandfather, but it does lead her to finding a fantastic companion and friend. The fact that it also leads to the rescuing and redemption of the entire village, and even Ri’s eventual choice to enter the adult world only helps to add to the unforeseen benefits of such a selfless act.

Synopsis

An unwitting artist, a conspiracy that delves into secret societies, and a ghost that falls in love. The three intersect in brilliant ways as they try to discover the meaning and hiding place of the lost word.

Thoughts

There is something incredibly intriguing about secret societies – probably the fact that they are secret is what tends to fascinate us. A ghost story using a shady secret society was a perfect way to tell the last story in Ghostwriting: Tales of the Supernatural. It was suspenseful, intriguing, with just the right dose of love, lust and betrayal.

For me, The Lost Word was the most potent of the stories in the Ghostwriting collection. It combined the elusive nature of secret societies, with a history steeped in murder, mayhem and mystery. And, then to complete it, there is the key to all knowledge – something that we can truly achieve on our own, but which many men (and possibly women) attempt to find a shortcut for. Harding’s reminder that mankind is selfish, and not ready for a universal truth hits a note. Although, this is balanced by the goodness in people – although there are those who are incredibly selfish, there are also those who are immensely selfless.

Synopsis

Rhea and Phillip might think that they’ve found the perfect home, but it soon turns out that it’s cursed.

Thoughts

In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have read this right before I went to sleep, it certainly gave me some very interesting and tripped out dreams. But, isn’t that a mark of a good story? Something that can affect both the conscious and the subconscious? The use of a curse and a building’s history to build this ghost story helped to add to the sense of mystery and suspense.

Rhea and Phillip’s ignorance at the past of their home, and the consequences of their actions lead them on a merry chase through the supernatural penalties of one man’s indiscretions. The increasingly violent confrontations of the spirit with Phillip and Rhea heighten the sense of speed and necessity within the story. You just know that if they don’t solve the problem (and soon), they will end up either dead or homeless.

The use of a priest in a supernatural tale about spirituality and ghosts was not one which I expected. Yet, somehow, Father Chuck’s influence and presence actually worked. As did his ability to accept the priesthood, and the idea of spiritual cleansing that doesn’t necessarily fall under the purvey of the Church. The balance of the two belief systems and acceptance of slightly different views of life is to me, exactly what religion and beliefs should be all about – and it made the Curse have a silver lining in my eyes.

the best ghost stories you will read for a long time … from the author of the bestselling Ancient Future. Featuring characters inspired by her closest friends and relations, traci delivers a series of spine-tingling stories alongside autobiographical snippets that give fascinating insights into her life and the real-life personalities who inspire the characters for her fiction (including the fiesty model for Ancient Future’s Tory Alexander!) Enter a world of mystery and hauntings fair and foul.

Thoughts

I’m not normally very interested in ghost stories. Even growing up, at sleep overs, I always found them a little boring. So it was a pleasant surprise to find a collection of short ghost stories which I actually enjoyed. Better yet to find a collection that makes me question my preconceptions about the world that I live in and how I am able to influence my reality.

Harding is always a purveyor of the power of thought weaves this through her tales so neatly that it is only after you read the last word that you realise the potency of her esoteric views. The happy endings and reminder of our own power to influence our lives gives a nice, complete feeling of power when you finish this collection. A welcome one that helps to highlight the supernatural aspects of the stories which are imparted throughout the collection.

One of the things that I loved the most about this collection of short stories was the introduction to each tale. All of the short stories were dedicated to one of the amazing women in Harding’s life and her explanation of how they have helped her on her own esoteric and writing journey. This made the stories feel immensely more personal, and the leads far more real.

Synopsis

Daine calls the wolves of Long Lake her family. So when they send out a cry for help, she answers. Humans are destroying their home, poisoning their valley. Daine and Numair soon realise there is a more sinister side to the destruction. For the poison runs deep and tastes like treason…

Thoughts

This is such a beautiful, sweet and inspiring story. Daine’s strength and moxie shine through as she fights to help rescue her friends and extended family. The vividness of the world in which she places herself and her strength of character just shine from the pages as the depth of danger in which Daine and Numair find themselves deepens.

Like Wild Magic, the overarching idea behind Wolf-Speaker is that of conservation and ecology – take care of the world around you, and it will take care of you. Daine’s inherent connection to the animals around her, and their reliance on the earth combine to provide a poignant reminder that whatever we do to Mother Earth will come back to us tenfold. The incorrect assumption that nature is simply here to serve us is dramatized in the underhanded and horrifying way in which Yolane and her cohort choose to treat their lands. Their dismissal of every warning and inability to acknowledge that wolves also have a claim to the lands on which they live slowly build upon each other to create a terrifyingly insidious plan to destroy everything around them… literally.

Although the care of our environment is the main theme throughout the story, it is also a reminder that our prejudices and biases should constantly be questioned. At the beginning, Daine’s hatred for Stormwings and her refusal to admit that there can be an iota of good within them is a great, and gentle reminder of the inherent racism that is present in many people. Even when we think that we are truly good and above such an abhorrent ideal, there is often an inkling of pre-determined judgement in our interactions when we first meet someone. The gradual lessening of Daine’s bias through a number of different characters and creatures helps to drive this lesson home in a way that isn’t forceful or accusatory, but rather a simple reminder to constantly question your own prejudices and biases.
