Synopsis

As one of the few people without bioengineered genetic enhancements, Go Jung-hwa has always had to scrape together a living in New Arcadia, the city-size oil rig floating in the Canadian Maritimes.

At the end of the world – life must go on.

After lynch Ltd., a technological tycoon dynasty, purchases the entire rig, Hwa’s talents and lack of any sort of altering attract their attention.

The opportunity of a lifetime… if she can manage to stay alive.

And when one of her former client’s – and friend’s – dismembered body is found floating in the North Atlantic, Hwa finds her loyalties split between her past and future. And it looks as if the future has come to collect in the present…

Thoughts

This story is absolutely brilliant and completely unforgettable! I’m hoping to find many, many, many more tales by Ashby to fill up my shelves… I just can’t seem to get the awesomeness of this story out of my head. Although, since it’s fieldwork season and I’m insanely busy, I basically had to stop reading it early on since I could already tell how hooked I was going to get…

As much as I loved this story, I did find it a little intense. It’s definitely the kind of tale that you have to concentrate on when reading. Although, I tend to feel that way about most SciFis. There is just something a little more complex and intense than most of the fantasies that I pick up…although the commentary on the world that we live in is also so much m ore poignant and beautifully intense than the run of the mill fantasies as well. There is just something so much more… extreme about a SciFi, and a well-written one like this… definitely a rave!

Hwa has to be one of my favourite heroines that I’ve read in a while. Not only does she have this amazing strength, as the story unfolds and you find out more and more about her life beforehand, you truly begin to understand how damn strong this woman is. As I said, completely unforgettable. Not the book that I want to put down at any point soon and not one that I’ll forget. I also love that Hwa is never in any way, shape or form described as beautiful. I get a little over women who have everything, and Hwa definitely doesn’t – which makes me want to be her when I grow up.

I don’t think I’ve read any books that actually feature the society of sex workers. Especially not the power of women in this industry. It turns such a taboo subject into something far more approachable. And the unionisation of the industry? Brilliant – something that I still think would be a brilliant idea, but that’s a political debate for another day…

Synopsis

When rebellion destroys the underground world in which Thimble and Stone have grown up, they take Stone’s son and try to escape the chaos. Along the way, they must evade the Freaks, beings who feed on human flesh. Leaving behind the roles of Builder and Breeder which they were assigned at birth, they wander the underground tunnels, looking for safety yet afraid to go “topside” where legend has it that the light and water will burn their skin from their bones.

Their journey takes them upward to an unimagined world of tinned food, comfortable furniture, and books. Away from their regimented society for the first time, and still facing imminent danger, Thimble and Stone acknowledge the forbidden attraction which both have denied for years.

Thoughts

This is a little bit cute. It’s easy, simple and just the right amount of activity to make you want to sink your teeth into it. I also love that it shows the Thimble and Stone survive. And have some kind of future ahead of them… I REALLY hope that they show up later in the series…

One of the parts of Enclave that I found a little difficult was the fact that Deuce just left the Enclave. She had no way to know what had happened after she disappeared. And, although her fever dream tells her that everyone was dead, it was a little abstract and that much more difficult to really feel like there was closure. I mean it was a great story telling technique, but I hate lose ends. This short story helped to fix up all of those lose ends and tie everything up in a nice, neat little knot.

There is a bit of a romantic entanglement throughout this story. It kind of hit on one thing that I tend to hate in young adult storylines – they’re so young when they fall stupidly, madly in love. After all, a sixteen-year-old finding her one and only is a bit hard to stomach. But, by creating a dystopian society in which the expected lifespan is less than twenty years… it makes this a little more relatable. Actually, it made the entire relationship between Thimble and Stone a very happy family creation tale. And I really, really hope that I get to see them again later on in the series!

Synopsis

Disease wipes out world’s humans. Family hides in underground. Boy narrator grows up, falls in love with another boy.

Thoughts

I absolutely loved Enclave. And one of the things that I loved the most about it was the world building. Which meant that it was such a pleasure to read this short story. It gave even greater insight into the amazing world that Aguirre had built. And it included a level of hopeful innocence that was in the main novels, but a lot less crushed.

The beginning of the apocalypse is thought to be caused in so many different ways. World war, nuclear attack, plague… there are so many different ways that people think the world could end. It’s hinted in Enclave that the end is caused by a bioweapon or plague of some sort. But the particulars are a little hard to unwind. Foundation provides that insight. In the moments before the world as we know it ends and just what it was like for teenagers at the time.

I also loved the fact that the lead boy in this story was in love with another boy. I’m finding that so many more stories and series I’m coming across include an LGBTQI character of some sort. And I love the normalisation that this provides. There is no big deal made out of their relationship, they’re just two boys in love. And it makes you smile as you turn the last page, even though they have to live the rest of their lives underground…

Synopsis

Welcome to the apocalypse.

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed “brat” has trained into one of three groups – Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear – to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been destroyed by Freaks, who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to their warnings and exile Deuce and Fade. As the two are guided out of the dead city by Fade’s long-ago memories, they face dangers, and feelings, unlike any they’ve ever known.

Thoughts

I was kind of surprised by how much I loved this story. I remember really enjoying Secret Heart an age ago when I read Kisses and Curses, but then this book just kind of sat on my bookshelf, waiting. It also reminded me of how much I love dystopia books. I read this entire thing cover to cover in a day (if you don’t count the three pages I read before bed the night before). Not only was it an amazing story, but it was also filled with fun characters, gritty challenges and a great commentary about the world around us.

I fell in love with Deuce from a fairly early point in the story. Whilst she is incredibly tough and independent, she is also an innocent. Which becomes more and more obvious as the storyline unfolds. The shattering of her world again and again is a little gut wrenching. As is the fact that every time you think she’s triumphed over something, things come crashing down all over again. It made it almost impossible to put the book down, but it also made it quite an intense emotional roller coaster. After all, I think that I’m a tough and independent woman, but I’m pretty sure that if I was tested all of my naivety would come flooding out…

Although this story is full of so many twists and turns, emotional turmoil and a huge level of confusion as to what’s going to happen next, it does have a happy ending, of sorts. It’s rare that I’m not sure where a story is leading, so I thoroughly enjoyed my confusion over this tale. I also loved the ending. It doesn’t finish off the story in any way, shape or form. But it gave a reprieve from the trials that Deuce and Fade are forced to go through. A point in the overarching story line that gives you a chance to stop and pause. But one that makes you want to continue on with the series.

Synopsis

“But what about Leon?” Now, in this new story that bridges the gap between Birthmarked and Prized, Caragh M. O’Brien answers her readers’ most common question with a tale of suffering and determination from Leon’s perspective. Be warned. The story is a spoiler for the first book in the award-winning trilogy. This promotional e-book includes this exclusive bridge story, as well as a teaser chapter for Prized, book two in the Birthmarked trilogy, available wherever e-books are sold November 2011.

Thoughts

This was kind of hard to read. But not because it was a bad story, rather, it made me cringe. The title, Tortured kind of tells you exactly why. The setting is a gorgeously apocalyptic world and hints towards a greater them about castes and social status. Also the superficialness of many societies. All things which I absolutely love to read about. And make me want to delve into the wider world of Birthmarked.

Tortured contains some spoilers for what happens in Birthmarked. And it was almost disappointing – just because now I have a rough idea of how the first novel may end. Having said that, by the time I actually get my hands on a copy of Birthmarked, I’ll probably have forgotten some of the aspects of this story. And then the first tale will be just as exciting as it was originally intended to be.

Synopsis

Lucy Price spends her day much like other 16 year-old girls in wartime America: praying that her brother comes back from the front and hoping the war ends quickly. But as violence ravages the world, the end never seems in sight. All Lucy can do is wait and tend to her victory garden while her mother does her part at the ammunition factory in town. That is until the Department of Defense appears on her doorstep telling her she could end the fighting if she’ll join The Cypress Project.

When Joshua O’Donnell’s father packs him off to Yale, forbidding him to enlist, he hopes his son’s brains will keep him off the battlefield. But Joshua’s knack for quantum mechanics draws attentions from his professor, a genius in the field of experimental science, who is working on technology that could end World War Two. Promised a nonviolent end to the war effort, Joshua can hardly say no to helping The Cypress Project.

The war has made Howard Patton an even richer man. Son of railroad tycoon Randolph Patton, Howard was a millionaire before he was born, but with a war on, trains are more important than ever. It’s good business and Howard isn’t eager to see it end until the government approaches him with a proposal: fund the technology that could end the war and receive power beyond his imagination. But when Howard discovers the true nature of The Cypress Project, he realizes his real remuneration is the one thing that his money can’t buy.

Completing The Cypress Project will force them all to make choices between love, destiny and freedom, but as the secrets of the experiment are revealed, each must decide between the bloody war being waged on the world’s soil and a deception that could change the course of humanity.

Thoughts

I’m fascinated by alternate histories. And although this is a fantasy spin on an alternate history, it’s still a really fun read. And fits that little niche that fascinates me nicely. This is based in World War II and provides a point at which the Crewel World splits off from our reality. As someone who hasn’t read Crewel yet, I don’t quite understand how yet. But the introduction to this divergence was brilliant.

I liked the innocence of Lucy and her desire to just do something to help the boys fighting in the war. Her unwillingness to care about men, until she finds one that is worth her time, is kind of cute. And I’m wondering if she shows up again in the greater series. Because the ending to that aspect of the story felt very open and incomplete.

Synopsis

A retelling of one of the scenes in Ann Aguirre’s Razorland series, told from a different perspective to give the reader a different insight into the tale.

Thoughts

There seem to be a number of deleted scenes from series throughout Kisses and Curses. This is another such tale. But it is certainly a great way to get me hooked into a series without my awareness – after all, I loved this point of view from the Razorland series, so it will be interesting to read the main stories from another POV.

I really liked the mole man setting of this story. In the introduction, Aguirre explains the setting and the dystopian setting of this tale. Something that works really well, and as someone who has lately been enjoying dystopian novels, it seems like a completely unique and fun idea.

Synopsis

I saw the moon crack and open like an egg, and a seethe of transparent beasts emerged…
I heard a sound like thunder inside the earth and the ground shook and broke open like a vast stony maw. It spat out fire and I saw wolves falling into a molten gold stream…
I made my way along the ancient tunnel, following Maruman, who ran lightly ahead of me. I did not ask how he had come to be here. He was the Moonwatcher as I was the Seeker.

This was where we had been destined to come together. Before Elspeth Gordie can continue her journey to find Sentinel and prevent it unleashing the horrors of the Great White, she must fight free of a strange prison, where people are laid to sleep forever or cling to a suffocating existence, believing the world beyond their walls is already utterly anihilated.

But at the end of her journey, nothing is as she imageind. She is drawn into the struggle for a kingdom, only to find the Destrooyer is at the heart of the turmoil, waiting for her.

Somehow she must do what she has sworn to do, for the sake of the world and all of its creatures. She must complete her quest, no matter what it costs…

Thoughts

I finally finished the series! Not only was this one of those series that was a long time in the making (and completion), but it was also one of those series that I bought the last book, and then left it on my shelf for 2 years. Partly because I wanted to reread the entire thing before I put my hands on the final book, but it’s a fairly complex and convoluted series all up. And, quite honestly the last two books kind of drag for me. To the point that I actually skim read The Red Queen. It was okay, but it wasn’t enough to fully draw me into the story and make me just completely digest and absorb every single word.

I liked that this was the complete conclusion to this series. It was the end of Elspeth’s long journey, and the end of an era of my literary life. (I can remember reading Obernewtyn when I was much younger, and it was part of growing up for me). However, I found a lot of the storyline quite distracting and not as concise as the first half of the series. Mostly I got lost in the storyline. Still amazingly written, but not as captivating as some of the past stories.

All in all, I’m glad that I read this. It made me feel satisfied that I finally finished a series I started long ago. But, it’s probably not one that I would read again in a hurry. There are many other books that I would much rather drown myself in.

Synopsis

It came to me then, like a chilly draught from an unseen gap, that I had always known in my deepest heart that it would be like this, a slipping away froma life full of people I had come to love, in a place I had helped to shape, in a land I had helped to free.

The time has come at Elspeth Gordie to leave the Land on her quest to find and stop the computermachine Sentinel from unleashing the deadly Balance of Terror arsenal. But before she can embark on her journey, she must find a lost key. And although she has long prepared for this day, nothing is as she anticipated.

Elspeth’s search will take her where she never thought to go, and bestow upon her stranger companions than any she ever imagined. It will lead her far from her destination to those she believed lost forever.

And it will test her, as she has never been tested before…

Thoughts

Finishing this book has been a long time coming. I started rereading the series when The Red Queen came out, and I hadn’t ever quite gotten to The Sending. Over two years later, I finally managed to find the time to actually sit down and read this story. It is intense and quite a long haul, but it is most certainly worth the time and brain power that I put into it. It is going to take me quite a while to finish The Red Queen as well, over a month (much like The Sending), but it is an epic journey, and sometimes spending the time to take an epic journey is definitely worthwhile.

Up until this moment in the series, Elspeth’s journey has been about finding the clues, but also helping her fellow Misfits. She’s created a home, a life, and a reality in which she is proud to live and love. Yet, there is a constant looming cloud of her upcoming quest. Finally, the moment has arrived, and as with every moment in this series, there are some fantastic conflicting emotions throughout. Yet, that is only the start of the story, really. Although Elspeth slinks away in the  night, she still manages to find herself some unlikely companions. Ones that will make the rest of the battle throughout The Red Queen all the more interesting.

As much as I loved this story, I did find it quite long winded. I think that’s because it is almost a midway point between Elspeth’s life in the Land and the end of her epic quest. There is a lot of setting up throughout this story, and a lot of moving from one point to another. Yet, the actual action is quite light. Especially in comparison to the first five stories. Yet, although it means that I took a lot longer to read this (it was easier to put down), it was still a great tale. One that I truly can’t wait to read the conclusion to.

My Bookshelves:
DystopiaParanormal fantasy, Shapeshifters
Pace: Fast
Format: Novel
Publisher: Ace fantasy
Year: 2016
5th sentence, 74th page: “Yes.”

Synopsis

Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…

Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

Thoughts

As always, Ilona Andrews has created an amazing story in the world of Kate Daniels. I was so disappointed that it was over. And now I have to wait I don’t know how long for the next story in this series. I waited for this one though, so I think I can wait for the next one… plus, there’s a few other Ilona Andrews series that I have in my shelf to start…

Kate continues to experience personal progress throughout this book. In this case, she not only has to battle the new desire to conquer the world, but also the restrictions placed on her by others. Although the battle with the need to conquer is more terrifying, I found her feeling of rubbing up against her restrictions all the more powerful. After all, she has continuously put herself in harms way to protect others, and now that she is expanding in her role as city’s protector, she is being warned to not do what she has always done. There is a beautiful point that she makes in the story that it is okay to almost kill herself when others need it, but the rest of the time, she is expected to not use her considerable powers. Rather than being treated like a person by certain members of her circle, she’s merely used as a tool that can be bought out when needed and hidden the remainder of the time. This double standard echoes in all of her relationships and is a reminder that it’s important to accept people – all of them, or none of them, not just the bits that work for you.

As with the other Kate Daniels books, this is kind of a dark story. But the books seem to constantly get darker as the series continues. This time Kate isn’t only forced to face her own demons in a battle to save herself and her city. But she is also in a race against time to save Curran and their unborn (unconceived) son. The stakes continue to get higher and higher as the battles rage around and through her.
