Thoughts

The Rostikov Legacy is a wonderful introduction to a great new world and filled with wonderful world building. Plus, it’s an easy read that I really enjoyed. The idea of a historical, regency type world filled with magic pulled me in from the very beginning. Plus, this is one of the few books I’ve read that features a male as the primary character. A nice change of pace that I definitely needed to add to my shelves.

Konrad is an intriguing protagonist. There are obviously layers upon layers to unpack as this series unfolds. Plus, he lives very comfortably alongside of all of his secrets. The lack of feeling hurts my heart, but it’s an angle that I haven’t read in quite some time. Plus, I love that he beginning to look at a different life, one in which he isn’t restricted by the lack of feeling and the position of being the Malykant.

The position of Malykant is kind of intense – being the detective, judge and executioner is a whole lot of responsibility to place upon a person. I understand why it is that when Konrad took up the mantle, he was also asked to give up his emotions. I can’t imagine the weight of the world on my shoulders like this. Whilst the culprit in this was fairly clear, it did open up a whole lot of moral thoughts and questions. Which I absolutely loved. Anything that makes me think and ponder is a good story in my books.

I can’t wait to read more of The Malykant Mysteries, there is so much world building in this shorter novel. And the potential for so much more mischief and mayhem to unfold. I want to know more about the mythological structure of this world and how Konrad’s friendship with the apothecary will unfold.

I read One Hot Holiday before circling back and diving into Protecting Piper. And, honestly, I just loved both of the stories. It was fun to start this series (for me) with a Christmas romantic suspense, and then actually start this series with the first couple to fall in love – Piper and Eric. This was an incredibly fun journey and I honestly couldn’t put this book down. It was one of those unforgettable stories that was… high intensity and made my heart beat incredibly fast.

I always enjoy the trope of that forbidden love from afar finally finding fruition and leading to a happily ever after. Both Piper and Eric have always been attached to one another, and, in a weird way, there for one another. But, misunderstandings and assumptions (as always) led to a separation that neither wanted. It’s not quite a second chance romance, but it has that feel when they finally take the dive towards their happily ever after. Even amongst all of the mayhem and chaos that drives them together.

Even though Piper has moments where she feels as though she might be betraying Ben, I love that she eventually realises just how much she loves both Wilde boys. Just in entirely different ways. Piper ends up being a part of their trio in the most beautiful way – and it is so wonderful to think of the amount of affection and care that is present within these relationships. Eden is able to write realistic loves (of all kinds) that made me smile and my heart beat.

The intensity and horror of Piper’s stalker escalate insanely quickly, which is probably the biggest part of why I just couldn’t put this book down. I mean, the creepiness and possessiveness of multiple men in Piper’s life was horrible. The fact that made it all that much worse though? It was all completely believable. I even managed to guess who the villain was early on, but quickly revised my thoughts because I didn’t think he quite fit the bill… which is what tends to happen in real life too.

One of the things that I enjoy most about L.B. Dunbar books is that they always feature couples who are that little bit older. For Nick and Holliday, they are next door neighbours who find their joy and happiness with each other at Christmas. Both have a whole lot of issues to get over, but I love how they come together as lovers fairly quickly. Plus, for both of them, their primary love language is gifts and acts of service. The courtship between them is slow and occurs through their willingness to give to each other. It’s really cute and sweet. But also build towards being able to communicate and just be together.

Nick’s willingness to join in with Holliday’s life and jump into being part of a family unit is really sweet. Rather than trying to take control, or not understanding the importance of Christmas, he tries to make Holliday’s life easier. I love that Dunbar doesn’t shy away from how difficult it can be for a Mum at Christmas time. Reading this at Christmas time with my first intense Christmas as a Mum of two (my second born was only 2 months for our first Christmas as a family of four, so this one was intense) made me feel so validated and seen. It highlighted the difficulties (and the joys) of what the Festive Season entails for mothers and the pressure we feel to make everything perfect.

Naughty-ish is the first romance that I’ve read in a while with an irritating ex who doesn’t actually get any kind of, well, anything. He doesn’t help Holliday out, he is selfish, and at the end of the story, all of his crappy decisions and their impact on his children are just… nothing. It’s kind of irritating, but then, it’s also so much more realistic than a lot of the romances that I read. I mean, most of the time the selfish fool doesn’t ever realise that they are a selfish fool. And Holliday does, after all, have to co-parent with Mitch for the rest of their lives.

As a mum of two little ones, I am absolutely dreading the idea of Elf on a Shelf when they get old enough. And Naughty-ish did nothing to change my mind. I’m seriously hoping I can come up with a good idea as to why we don’t do this tradition – it just adds to the stress and difficulties of Christmas time and the festive season. This was such an adorable Christmas romance, and I love that it featured a single mum who has to deal with all of the nonsense of magic this time “magical”.

I spent a lot of this novella just thinking that Eurydice is such a weird name. Definitely not one that I’ve ever read before. And yet, as I read more and more of this and steadily fell for the strong willed young woman, I decided that I actually really liked the name. Mostly because I thoroughly enjoyed her quiet gumption and practicality. Then there’s the fact that even as she falls in love, she maintains her dignity and sense of self. She doesn’t just bow to whatever her marriage of convenience husband desires because it’s simple for him. She still manages to navigate a world which looks down on her with her head held high.

Another part of why I just adored Eurydice so much is the way in which she finally reveals her feelings to Sebastian. Instead of being a sweet, romantic moment where they whisper the truth to one another. It is a moment in which her ire is up and she completely dresses down her unfortunately ignorant husband. It’s the perfect culmination of the two characters’ romance and a great reminder that the women of historical romances, whilst maybe not entirely realistic are so damn wonderfully articulate.

This is actually the fourth story in the Brides of North Barrows series, and I kind of like that I was able to read about the final couple and then I get to spin back around to the first. After all, the first couple of this series is actually the ones who are trying to stop Eurydice and Sebastian from eloping. It gives their marriage a fast-paced, illicit feeling that I absolutely gobbled up. Then, there’s a potential duel because, why not? There was actually quite a bit of action that leads Sebastian and Eurydice to figure out how they feel about each other. And I was there for every step of the way. And now I get to go back and find out all of the cogs that eventually led to this moment!

Even though this is a Christmas historical romance, it wasn’t a huge driver of the story. It does create an important backdrop and drives one of the plot points. But it is more of a pleasant accompaniment than the actual reason that Eurydice and Sebastian end up together. It does give the feel of many happy Christmases though. And I like to imagine that Eurydice is finally able to heal the difficulties of Sebastian’s past Christmases.

This is a great bridging short story, one in which an established couple is able to get their Christmas wish and start their new beginnings. But, it’s also a story in which another Morelli starts his journey to true love and a happily ever after. Baby, It’s Cold Outside hints at so many different layers to this world that I’m keen to dive into (even if they are going to be far more intense than the stories I normally read).

Baby, It’s Cold Outside is a story which features a Mafia boss and the incredibly tough and independent woman that he marries. I honestly was expecting it to become a bit of a threesome story, but it was just a bridging tale. With lots and lots of lust to keep you warm at night. This short story might only have been three chapters long, but everything in it was filled with intensity, from the couple’s relationship and their burgeoning friendship with Tiernan.

I love that Baby, It’s Cold Outside shows the beginnings of Tiernan Morelli becoming independent of his evil and controlling father. With all of the beginnings of this culminating at the Morelli Christmas Gala, like the other stories in the Meet Me Under the Mistletoe Anthology.

As someone with a strong willed and independent daughter, I really enjoyed reading this. I mean, Evie and Liliana are absolute goals for parenting – they have a healthy, happy and cheerful relationship. Sometimes it’s more of a friendship, but when necessary, Evie is able to enforce her rules and reduce the chaos that Liliana is able to reign on the world. There’s also a whole lot of love, and even when the Evie and Liliana don’t necessarily get along, they are able to work through it and come back all that much more stronger. Plus, even if this is a paranormal romance, it’s also a love story about mother and daughter, and the lengths that a mother will go to to protect and care for her child.

Luc turning up, and back into Evie’s life is kind of intense. I love that his daughter accidentally summoned him, and that he is just as thrown and confused by the change in their lives as Evie and Liliana. Even though I would probably hold more of a grudge than Evie, I love that she just… goes along with his presence and works with it. Yet, she is also a little reluctant to let him into their lives – she might not be holding a grudge or any bitterness, but she also makes sure that if he decides to be a part of their lives, it’s going to be healthy and happy for all of them.

It wasn’t until my late twenties that I managed to find myself a Girl Squad. And Bev and Viv are absolute goals for this. I may have my girls behind me, but I love the insanity and the Ride or Die vibe that the girls give off. The trio of woman are unapologetically supportive of one another, but they also don’t hesitate to share harsh truths. I can’t wait for Bev and Viv to find their own happily ever afters. And to see how many more butt kickings they can dole out. The fact that this lead trio is all in their forties and not on the cusp of adulthood just made me love them all that much more.

Liliana’s grandfather is truly horrible and annoying. I love that, at the end of the day, both Evie and Liliana tell him exactly what he can do with his attitude. He’s definitely not a figure that has had anyone stand up to him in the past, and the fact that the two mortal women are able to do so? Priceless. Then, there’s the fact that their going toe to toe with him sets up a whole lot more story and drama to come. And, I for one, can’t wait to read more of the dramas that are going to unfold in the lives of these strong women.

I read Gift of the Witch a long time before I had the chance to read Soul of the Witch. Which just meant that I had an inkling of a few of the road blocks Abby and Clay were likely to experience. Plus, I knew I was going to enjoy going back to the beginning and finding out how their love story truly started. It’s always nice to read a story that you know you’re going to enjoy. Plus, it’s nice to actually get to know Keating Hollow a little bit – there isn’t a huge amount of background and world building in Gift of the Witch.

I love that Abby and Clay get a second chance and a chance to heal in Soul of the Witch. There is a whole lot of history for the two of them, but not quite as much angst and anger about the past as I had expected. I mean, if I was in either of their shoes, I’d be rehashing the past more than either of them do. But I kind of liked this simplicity – they get a second chance with a whole lot less anger and regret than I anticipated. Honestly, the majority of the angst is all Abby’s – Clay is just trying to figure out his life and get his priorities straight.

Even though it takes a while, I love that Abby starts to work on forgiving herself for Charlotte’s death and finding a way to actually thrive, not just survive. It’s amazing that Chase so easily and non-judgementally incorporates therapy and the process into this story. And that Abby is finally able to admit that, even though we all make mistakes at the age of eighteen, the consequences aren’t always just ours to carry. Particularly in Abby’s case – where the consequences of her actions came about from a whole number of horribleness that led to the Perfect Storm.

Clay’s biggest battle is external rather than internal, it is the battle for custody and trying to be the best father he can possibly be. Honestly, at one point, I was more intrigued by the idea of Clay and Olive finding their happily ever after. Not really overly worried about Abby and Clay finding the romance that they want. I mean, the happiness of a little girl is so important and her mother is just so damn selfish. I love that everything ends up with a happily ever after and a big smile on everyone’s faces (mine included).

In Keating Hollow, the town isn’t just a small town with lots of romance, it’s also one built around magic. I really enjoyed how magic is just a part of everyday life and incorporated into everyday things. Rather than a huge deal or something that left people feeling unequal. It’s a joyful world in which everyone learns about magic alongside all the other things we learn as we grow older.

From the title of this story, and the fact that it’s a Christmas story, I knew that the song “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” was going to get mentioned (and stuck in my head). And I wasn’t wrong. I ended up walking around the house singing this song for ages after starting this story. And then, I got it stuck in my head all over again when I started writing this review. Honestly, I’m just going to have to sing this song every time I see the cover for Open Fire, and I’m honestly okay with that – this was a fantastic novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I can’t imagine trying to fly around Christmas, particularly on Christmas eve. That must be one of the most awkward and intense times at the airport. Which meant that having a romance based on flying at this time of year, and the inevitable flight delays was something that fascinated me. I mean, I always try to travel off the peak times, and I’ve never had to entertain myself in an airport for more than four hours, so it was fun to read about how Becker and Sloan were able to do so. Plus, having a romance set in a single location (primarily) in a matter of hours was a fun and brilliant way to make this story come to life.

This was the very definition of a slow-burn romance. Becker and Sloan spend a lot of time getting to know one another and just, genuinely enjoying each other’s company. The majority of this book is honestly just about them spending time together and getting to know one another. The fact that they don’t actually kiss until right towards the end just made it all that much sweeter and more spine tingling. Honestly, it made me swoon just a little bit reading about this. The build up was phenomenal and I can’t wait to read another M.E. Carter story.

Not only is this a fun and engaging romance, it also highlights the importance of family and Christmas time. I love that both Sloan and Becker are trying to rush home to spend the time with their families, although they have vastly different traditions. But, really, it was the moment that Becker chooses to dress up as Santa for Sloan’s family and jump into their relationship with both eyes open that made me absolutely fall for this Christmas romance.

As I normally do with novellas, I found that this was the first story I read in the Sentinel Wars series. And now I’m excited to read more! I love the idea of Fated Mates at the best of times, but I also like that there is a whole supernatural bent on just how much that “fate” means to both of them. The fact that this is an antique collector and a supernatural warrior… just made it all that much more fun and impossible to put down.

Neal and Vivian are a little bit instalove (which isn’t surprising as this is a whole fated mates, meant to be together thing). But, even if they are immediately drawn to one another, they still manage to take most of this story getting to know one another. The mental and emotional attributes are what ultimately draw them together, even after the physical ones drew them towards each other in the first place.

There is a lot of action in this story without much angst. It all occurs in a ridiculously short amount of time too. Neal and Virginia are in a race to try and find a gadget which will save his friend’s life. But, alongside that, they are racing the demon-like creatures which are also hunting Virginia. The high stakes and the quick pace meant that this novella was over far too quickly for my liking.

From the title of this, I knew that there was going to be a bit of a “What If” vibe to this romance, and from the beginning, I was wondering how Logan would end up being the What If guy. What I did not expect was that it would also be a bit of a workplace romance and one that I would seriously enjoy. I mean, I knew that I’d enjoy this book, because I really like Blakely’s romances, but I didn’t realise this would so quickly turn into a workplace romance. Or that Logan and Bryn would have a whole lot of baggage to unpack before they manage to come together for their happily ever afters.

One of the things that both Bryn and Logan must overcome in their journey to each other is the fact that they are both learning how to move on from their divorces. And that they were both cheated on in their marriages. Whilst Logan has to negotiate this as a single father, Bryn is doing this as a strong and independent career woman. Different roles in their lives, but with some of that same baggage. Plus, there is just something ridiculously yummy and fun single dads who dote on their daughters. Actually, any time a father is an amazing father, it’s going to make me (and most other women) feel all the warm and gooey feelings about them.

The in-balance for Bryn of her wanting to date her boss, and how this often reflects poorly on the woman (regardless of the circumstances). Yet, rather than pushing the issue, Logan does a great job of backing down and then spending the time to try and figure out how he can actually have all the things. Without negatively impacting Bryn and how her employees view her. I thought that this balance and negotiation, which took up a fair portion of the book and conflict, was really well handled. I mean, women are often perceived in a more negative light regardless of the circumstances, so it’s a greater risk for us. But, in admitting this and trying to work with Bryn, Logan does a great job of supporting her.

Ultimately, as much as I loved this story and the romantic journey it took me on, I loved Bryn the most. There is so much crackling wit and sassy dialogue, which I for one, would never have because I am not that quick. But, it was also the fact that Bryn is her own Boss Bitch. And, by the end of her character journey in this story, she decides how she wants to be her own Boss Bitch. Doing something that is terrifying and brave, all on her own. Something which I admire and would love to have the guts to do myself one day.
