Thoughts

There is something immediately loveable and adorable about Gussie and her truly insane family. Although, I do generally love stories which feature an off-kilter, dysfunctional, but loving family. And Gussie’s Wyrde family hits that spot exactly. Plus, Wyrde and Wayward is a perfect way to introduce a whole new level of insanity to my bookshelves – I can’t wait to read more about Gussie and the shenanigans she finds herself involved with.

You really can’t go wrong with a story that begins with a woman being kidnapped, and the kidnappers just finding it to be an enjoyable lark. I mean, this story careens from one moment of pure insanity to another. Set in regency England, with all of the societal expectations. Honestly, I thought this might be interesting, I didn’t think I’d find it as hilarious and witty as I did. Plus, there is that whole, gothic, regency feel partnered with magic and the paranormal – a mix that I honestly didn’t know I needed in my life.

It was fun discovering what Gussie’s Wyrde was, and why she has been so sheltered up until this moment. I mean, it was surprising, but also, I love that she has a whole lot of potential that no one has figured out yet. I can’t wait to dive into the rest of this series to figure out what other hidden secrets that she has. Her kidnappers family is certifiably insane, and I’m sure they will at some point reveal their horribleness again in an attempt to take advantage of Gussie.

Wyrde and Wayward is a story full of insanity and wit, partnered with regency manners and society. Plus, there is a family filled with misfits and monsters. I love that Theo and everyone else is limited and expanded by their powers. The setting and the style, partnered with the dry, English humour throughout made this impossible to put down. And now I can’t wait to read more England and the world of the Wyrde…

Sweet Distraction by Lainey Davis

Thoughts

After reading Lesson Plans, I really wanted to know more about Alice and how she goes about her happily ever after. Particularly since she’s only a teen in the opening novella, and it was interesting to think of who she would become when she reached adulthood. Alice is so bright and full of life, whereas Tim(ber) is a great counterpoint to this, a little more serious and less willing to grab life and dive right in. I love how engaging they were as a couple, but also how they balanced each other out.

I love that throughout all of Tim dealing with his emotions, it’s Alice that is his safe place. And she is willing to help him and be there for him when she realises this. Davis describes having that one person who is the ‘safe space’ incredibly well – having that one person who you can let your guard down around and actually open up to. One of the most memorable scenes in this book is when Tim and Alice are sitting on a park bench and he is able to just relax and unwind.

At first, I wasn’t all that confident of Alice and Tim as a couple, he was a bit controlling, and she’s such a free spirit. But, it turns out that they are a fantastic couple. Tim just needed to realise that he doesn’t get to unilaterally call the shots. Once he manages that, he’s actually really sweet and you can understand all of the emotion and love behind the insanity of his behaviour and questionable decision making.

There is something enjoyably and beautifully simple about Davis’ writing. It is always a couple that somehow work perfectly together. There are a few hurdles, and then a great happily ever after. I love reading her work and just… living in a happy world with enough complications to keep it interesting. Now, I’m looking forward to reading the next in the Stag Brothers series.

Thoughts

I absolutely adored Piper and Cian’s story – they had enough misunderstandings throughout to make it interesting, but not enough to make it painful. I love that they keep on jumping towards a relationship and then jumping backwards. Plus, some of the insanity of the Thorne family to keep things really spicy. I’m still disappointed that the Thorne Witches series is on Kindle Unlimited and I can’t currently read those books…

Piper’s spunk is completely adorable, and I love that she just didn’t cave to Cian’s influence early on in the relationship. That, and that she was able to figure out a way to still be herself when being consumed by a new love. She also found a way to be comfortable with what he was able to offer without trying to change him, but also without compromising herself.

Cian is incredibly stupid and ignorant, particularly since one bad experience makes him completely turn against the idea of love. But, I did love getting to watch him thaw throughout this. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still an absolute fool who makes some monumental mistakes, but he’s a redeemable fool – one that I ultimately appreciated and liked.

I can’t wait to see how the rest of this curse unravels – I love that there are three couples who are key to unravelling the curse. And now I can’t wait to see how each of these couples helps to create the happily ever after for their family. Plus, there are many family shenanigans and nonsense that is just too cute and entertaining to forget about.

Thoughts

I absolutely loved reading a romance which featured a search and rescue worker, because the whole Good Samaritan thing is just dreamy. And then, there’s the fact that there is also a paranormal spin on the search and rescue. The fact that the opening scene of this book is Jack using his wave bending powers to stop an oil spill and an environmental disaster… brilliant.

Each of the Royal Families in the Royal States have a seriously cool power, and I love that the Maine’s family gift is all about healing. And that their entire identity and economy are based around medicine and healing. Although, I can’t imagine having the will to heal to the degree that you actually give part of your life for another being – that is a level of commitment and kindness that I’m not entirely sure I could impart. The pitfalls of tying yourself to someone are also glaringly obvious and made me love the Maine Royals even more.

I kept on wondering just when the evil uncle was going to surface – I mean, he’s an evil uncle who really wants the crown. You know he’s going to show up and enact his nefarious plans the moment that he can… yet, when he finally makes his appearance, he was not only far more evil than I had realised. I mean, there are hints of even more terrible abuses than I had originally imagined. But, he also got a much more gruesome ending than I had expected too. Which was kind of nice… whilst also being seriously gross. And disturbing. Probably part of why I love reading this series, they tend to have a bit of extra blood and mayhem than I anticipate… because I’m a blood thirsty wench.

Bonds sets up Cold Flame really well, and I can’t wait to see what a story featuring my first New York Royal is going to entail. The fact that it’s a royal who doesn’t necessarily fit in with the rest of her family just makes me all that much more excited to dive into this story! It’s also highlighting how interconnected all of the Royal Families in the Royal States series are. They’re all marrying off each other, know each other’s secrets and just being entirely chaotic in their practices. I can’t wait to see how the New Yorkers are going to positively interact with the rest of the insane royal families.

Jack’s past and his reasons for hiding are a little bit sad. The survivors of a family genocide who are too scared to even use their talents, in case they are discovered. Although, I love that Jack is driven to constantly challenge himself, which is what ends them all in hot water. Now I kind of want more of his siblings to see how they fit in with the rest of the royals and establish their newfound freedom. Honestly, I constantly want to find out more about the characters in this series anyway, which is why I keep reading it…

Thoughts

This was a much shorter and easier read than I was anticipating. Which honestly made me ridiculously happy – sometimes a short and easy romance is exactly what is needed to reset the brain and just drift off for a little while. This was incredibly pleasant with a whole lot of yummy lust in it. Incredibly enjoyable and fun.

Lannister is a truly horrifying ex and villain – I mean, it’s obvious that Skye is running from someone not so nice. But, it gets even worse the more the story unfolds. Plus, when it becomes obvious that he’s also the villain in Jace’s story – it’s pretty intense. But, I love how Skye is able to get her life back from his insanity.

Jace and Skye were a little bit instalove in this story, but it was kind of built on a friendship as well. I love that although both jump to a few conclusions, they are also able to give each other the benefit of the doubt. They worked as a very good couple, and I can’t wait to see what other women fall in love with the werewolves of the rising sun.

This was an incredibly easy and light story, one with just enough drama and action to make me not want to put the story down. I can’t wait to read more stories in this series.

Thoughts

Abby is a really good lead, one that I loved getting to know. I also loved that she’s an earth witch with a young family, trying to negotiate her new role in life and the changes in her reality. Plus I just generally love that she’s got a lot of love with her small family, and the loyalty of some beautiful sisters.

Clay is a great partner to Abby and a fantastic family man. Plus, I love the idea of the brewery and how Abby’s brews are what save the day. His daughter (and Abby’s step-daughter) is also growing and finding her own feet within their fun new family dynamic. I really enjoyed the feeling of contentment that both Clay and Abby have within their lives and relationship.

Abby’s past friendship loss is heartbreaking, but I love how her ghostly friend is warning her of the dramas that are about to enter her life. As someone who hasn’t had the privilege of reading the Keating Hollow stories, it was nice that Chase still provided some history and background to Charlotte. But not so much that we got bogged down in the details.

This was a nice happily ever after story. But it also had a completely psychotic mother in the form of Abby’s mother. The cause of the curse is completely insane and I was actually gobsmacked at her audacity at the end.

Henry and Sophia are one of those beautiful and fun couples that I just couldn’t get out of my head. The fact that this whole story and relationship starts with Sophia thinking of Henry as Satan just made it all that much more entertaining. Even though their beginning might have been a bit unorthodox, ultimately they were total relationship goals and completely gorgeous. And, although this is the second story in the Baker’s Creek Billionaire Brothers series, it was a great introduction to Burgoa and the rest of the Baker Creek brothers.

I honestly thought at the beginning of this that there would be more hurdles to Henry and Sophia getting together. But, it just didn’t happen. And then, when they got together, there was still half of the book! I both love and hate when this happens – it’s great that they got together quickly, but then there were a lot of drama to get through. Which is exactly what I like to read about – the drama that happens after a couple gets together and really helps them to prove their mettle.

Although Martina is one such hurdle that Sohpia and Henry need to overcome, I love that Sophia is able to handle her with grace and dignity. Rather than pitting the women of this story against one another and having them try and take each other down, Sohpia is ablet o find a way for everyone to get out of an awkward situation with a happily ever after. And, in doing so, Sophia is able to build someone up to gain her own independence.

I love that this series sets all of the Aldridge boys up to have some huge battles in their future. It makes me desperately want to go back and read Loved You Once, but also leap forward in the series and dive in to Defying Our Forever. Each of the boys have a phenomenal battle on their hands, and I want to know how they’ll unravel. Plus, Sophia’s letter provides a great indicator to just how messy the situation is about to get, whilst also hinting that maybe their father wasn’t quite the evil being that they all believed him to be. He might not have been kind and good, but maybe not quite as thoroughly evil as anticipated.

Allison’s journey throughout this story is actually a little bit sad, surprisingly so for the tone of most of the Blain books that I’ve read so far. And, even with all of the obstacles that Allison overcomes, she doesn’t quite get the happily ever after that I was anticipating. I mean, Blain’s writing is normally finished by a romantic happily ever after ending, so it was kind of surprising that Allison didn’t end the story with a man at her side. But, I kind of liked that fact.

I love that Allison is an insanely old werewolf and the Caretaker of the Seasons. Not only is that a great level of characterisation, but also Allison’s past provides a fantastic insight into the Witch and Wolf world and all of the politics within it. I also really enjoyed how the wolf aspect of Allison’s personality as so much more aggressive in her care for the seasons than her human alter-ego.

Unlike the some of the other series within Blain’s world, this story had a whole lot of sad and senseless death throughout it. I honestly had my heart hurt a whole lot more by this story than any of her other tales. Which made me seriously love it – I love that the story didn’t follow the pathway that I was expecting, and that it was a whole lot darker than anticipated. The tragedy and hurt just made all of the nice moments throughout even better.

I absolutely adored this story – it was much darker than I expected, but I think that that’s what made me enjoy it. It’s definitely drawn me into the Witch and Wolf world. Now I can’t wait to read more about these amazing characters and all of the horrible politics that are at play within the this world.

Catnapped by R.J. Blain

As a fur baby mum, I love stories which feature women who will do anything for their pets. And in the case of Catnapped, Diana will do literally anything for her stolen cat. And I love that her journey to rescue her cat ends up with not only a happily ever after match, but also a whole lot of mayhem and destruction. Which is kind of expected in a Blain book by this point in my experience of her works.

Darian is a great, and very passive companion for Diana. Which is not a bad thing, I love that Diana just races forward, taking over the world and taking name. And Darian just supports her and has her back. Plus, it meant that Diana’s interactions with Lucifer are all that much more entertaining and chaotic. The chaos is really why I read Blain, and the fact that the men are often just along for whatever chaotic ride the women decide to run away on…

I spent the whole time reading Catnapped trying really hard to guess what kind of supernatural being Diana was going to become. I mean, she was getting transformed by Lucifer, it was going to be an interesting being. And I also love that he has a somewhat insane preoccupation with unicorns… as such, I probably should’ve had a bit more of an inkling as to what Diana was going to become, but it still blindsided me. And now I want more nightmares in my life.

There is a bit of a common theme of Christianity in this series. But I’ve noticed that the last few books have gotten even more heavily into the lore. For someone who doesn’t necessarily love stories which feature Christianity, I am loving Blain’s take on it. There’s also more information on the Triads and how they create their families (which I love) and shrouds (which I am kind of obsessed with). It gives a whole lot of information that I’ll probably enjoy on a reread.

I absolutely loved visiting with a number of past and well-loved characters in Catnapped. One of my favourite things about romance series is often that you get to revisit characters, while moving onto a whole other set. The epilogue for this story in particular was fun and gave me so many happily ever after vibes.

Jade and Sandro are an entertaining couple, and it was interesting leaving them at the conclusion of Outfoxed. Now, they begin to dive deeper into the mystery of the Tulsa twisters and all of the death and destruction that has caused. I mean, I love a good mystery, and it was fun trying to figure out motives alongside Jade and Sandro. Plus, just the usual shenanigans and humour that I look forward to when reading a Blain story.

I was expecting a whole lot more New Orleans and the New Orleans Queens. And honestly, I was kind of disappointed that I wasn’t getting more! Jade and Sandro spent a sadly short time with the queens, and even Sandro’s family. But, I’m hoping that the conclusion of this trilogy will lead to more shenanigans across the border in New Orleans. Plus, I love that they’re a bloodthirst, matriarchal lot who were incredibly happy to hunt down those who wished harm on others.

Jade’s willingness to work with what she has and manipulate the situation is one of the reasons that I absolutely adore her. And why I loved this series from the very first page. Plus, she takes such total pride in her fox tail and ears. I love the fact that her personality and cunning reflect her fox-nature. That, and she is such a competent witch makes her impossible not to love.

I would’ve found Jade’s total food obsession annoying and a bit over the top. If I wasn’t just as food obsessed at times – I mean, I completely understand being solely motivated by food at times. A lot of times. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about food. And what I’m going to eat next, and who is going to supply said food… probably another reason why I love Jade – she’s just as food obsessed as I am… but has cooler superpowers.
