Thoughts

Howl for It is a great anthology with two fun and engaging novellas. Even on the reread, I absolutely adored both of these stories. They were a whole lot of fun, quite light and a fantastic way to leave aside the whole adulting thing for a little while. Both paranormal romances featured werewolves, but in starkly different ways – one was part of a greater series and filled in aspects of Laurenston’s Shifter World. The other, a story about Hunters and Shifters ultimately coming together.

I picked this up as a reread as part of my Laurenston ReRead, and there are zero regrets about this decision. I always love revisiting a well-loved anthology of stories, and Howl For It definitely ticks those boxes. It’s a great reminder of why I love reading anthologies – the novellas and short stories just work as a brilliant window into another world. Into a new author, or a great way to revisit someone that you have read before, and just want to return to again.

Protecting Piper by Cynthia Eden

Title: Protecting Piper

Thoughts

I read One Hot Holiday before circling back and diving into Protecting Piper. And, honestly, I just loved both of the stories. It was fun to start this series (for me) with a Christmas romantic suspense, and then actually start this series with the first couple to fall in love – Piper and Eric. This was an incredibly fun journey and I honestly couldn’t put this book down. It was one of those unforgettable stories that was… high intensity and made my heart beat incredibly fast.

I always enjoy the trope of that forbidden love from afar finally finding fruition and leading to a happily ever after. Both Piper and Eric have always been attached to one another, and, in a weird way, there for one another. But, misunderstandings and assumptions (as always) led to a separation that neither wanted. It’s not quite a second chance romance, but it has that feel when they finally take the dive towards their happily ever after. Even amongst all of the mayhem and chaos that drives them together.

Even though Piper has moments where she feels as though she might be betraying Ben, I love that she eventually realises just how much she loves both Wilde boys. Just in entirely different ways. Piper ends up being a part of their trio in the most beautiful way – and it is so wonderful to think of the amount of affection and care that is present within these relationships. Eden is able to write realistic loves (of all kinds) that made me smile and my heart beat.

The intensity and horror of Piper’s stalker escalate insanely quickly, which is probably the biggest part of why I just couldn’t put this book down. I mean, the creepiness and possessiveness of multiple men in Piper’s life was horrible. The fact that made it all that much worse though? It was all completely believable. I even managed to guess who the villain was early on, but quickly revised my thoughts because I didn’t think he quite fit the bill… which is what tends to happen in real life too.

One Hot Holiday by Cynthia Eden

Thoughts

This is the first book in the Wilde Ways series that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. And possibly one of my first full-length Cynthia Eden books. And I absolutely adored it. A romantic suspense Christmas story that has an incredibly insane and creepy stalker. A woman running from her past. And the man who wanted to keep her safe. I honestly couldn’t put this book down – it was fast paced and intense. A story that I won’t be forgetting any time soon. Now I can’t wait to read more of Eden’s stories. I hope that they are all as intense and impossible to put down as this one!

I love that this story starts with elves on bicycles almost running Haley over. It was a fun little Meet Cute. Even if Haley is immediately scared, I like how it started the foundation for Haley and Spencer’s relationship. Plus, a town who celebrates Christmas by having a bunch of elves ride on bikes while playing music? It sounds incredibly off-kilter and a little bit different. Kind of got me in the Christmas mood from fairly early on, even if this was a Christmas romance with a whole heap of drama.

One Hot Holiday is a story that is not just filled with romance and drama, but has a whole lot of action peppered throughout. I’m not sure if it was my wish for Haley and Spencer to get together, or the hope that the bad guy was going to get caught that kept me reading. Honestly, this was maybe not the best book to read right before bed time – I ended up having to start a second, calmer book after reading this, just so I could sleep. Eden managed to balance the horrors of being hunted with the joys of falling in love perfectly.

This was an impossible book to put down, and one that I will look forward to reading again in the future. I can’t wait to read more about the men and women who work for Wilde and find out what other nonsense comes up in their lives. I mean, murder, mayhem and all sorts of chaos as a backdrop to falling in love? Definitely the kind of book that I enjoy reading and will read more of in the future!

A Vampire’s Christmas Carol by Cynthia Eden

Overview

Title: A Vampire’s Christmas Carol

Thoughts

I finally read Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol within the last few years. It was definitely one of those classics that I absolutely loved. So, I was honestly a little leery about reading this and how Eden’s reimagination of this beloved classic would go. And, honestly, it was brilliant. I loved it and look forward to adding this to my reread pile!

As anyone who knows the original story knows, the Scrooge is visited by three angels to show him the Christmases of his past, present and future. I love that all three of these angels are actually characters from the life of the vampire. And, that each of these Christmases visited are actually based around the love of his life. It gives a more romantic / love story slant to the classic. Which, admittedly had pretty much no love story, just hints of a past one. But I digress…

Ultimately towards the end of this story, you find out that there is a whole lot of hope for the vampire. And that the tragic love story that he has built up in his mind might not be quite as true as he believes. I love that there are sacrifices and tragedies throughout, but it is the ultimate sacrifice made in love that will melt your heart. And also that keeps this story within that same vein of redemption as the original Christmas Carol.

I absolutely adored this novella. It was a fun and slightly dark Christmas story. One that was a wonderful reimagining of one of my favourite Christmas classics. Definitely a testament to the enjoyment I get out of reading Eden’s work.

Thoughts

This was such a cute and festive little Christmas novella. There was a touch of danger and suspense to it that helped get the heart pumping. But overall, it was just a nice, predictable, and enjoyable read. Set at Christmas, when all the wishes can come true.

I did like that the lead female character in this romance was named Noelle. I mean, it’s a little cliche, but also very enjoyable. That and, it really fits with the whole sunshine falls for the grinch trope that is going on. Noelle is also just a really great character, and I love how all she wants to do is spread the cheer around.

Brady is kind of an idiot in a lot of ways… mostly the fact that he keeps making decisions for Noelle based on his own assumptions. But I also love that he is fiercely protective of her. And that the other trope he fits is the brother’s best friend… and that Brady’s best friend is blatantly playing matchmaker here…

This is a wonderfully cute Christmas romance novella. The suspense of the stalker raises the stakes. But overall, it is just an incredibly sweet little story.

Wicked Ways by Cynthia Eden

Thoughts

It’s always interesting to see how a story will drop you right into the action. In the case of Wicked Ways, this novella starts off with a date gone wonderfully, horrifyingly wrong. Like, seriously bad. But then, because it’s paranormal romance, it gets better and better. Leaving you with a smile on your face and a bit of a spring in your step. I absolutely loved reading this and it’s definitely moved some of my Cynthia Eden books to the top of my TBR priority… until the next amazing story that I read.

I love that as Miranda starts to fall for a shifter man, she is able to accept all of him. There is no gentleness in his Otherness, and she is able to take that on board and just… enjoy his company. I’m all for love stories that involve completely accepting your other half for all of their flaws. Miranda just takes that a step further as she accepts him for all of his… claws.

This novella is a great romantic suspense, with shapeshifters and vampires thrown in. At it’s heart, it’s really a story of two people falling in love as they hunt down a serial killer and sociopath (or is it a psychopath, I get my paths mixed up). The fact that the killer is a vampire and the man hunting him is a cat shapeshifter adds to the drama, blood and adrenaline. But, it’s still a pretty simple and fun romantic suspense novella.

Wicked Ways is yummy and fun. It was a wonderful novella that I thoroughly enjoyed for the steaminess and action. I definitely loved the drama and look forward to more of this in the future of my Cynthia Eden reading.

Thoughts

I’ve read a Cynthia Eden story before, a little while ago. But just the one, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect with this novella. Likewise, after reading the blurb for this tale, I thought I had an inkling of what I was going to enter into. None of these things prepared me for the story I got. And it was completely epic for that fact. I seriously loved this and had a great time reading through this novella.

There is a whole lot of betrayal and treachery throughout this story. The turns and the deceits happened so quickly that I got to a point I was expecting it with each turn of the page. I most definitely had a beating heart throughout this tale. And it most definitely made my poor heart hurt for both Gage and Kayla – they so obviously care for one another, but are also constantly thrown into the path of some seriously horrible drama.

Gage and Kayla work wonderfully as a couple, although Gage does spend most of this story underestimating her, and then getting his butt kicked. I love that Kayla is able to go toe to toe with Gage in every moment that he underestimates her. It made me smile and laugh. I love a strong woman who is able to stand up for herself and take people to task for underestimating them.

To add to the drama and heartbreak throughout this story, there is Kayla’s brother and the past trauma that they both experienced. You spend the whole time hoping that Kayla and Gage find their happily ever after, but also hoping that Kayla is able to find that with her own brother. And the two seem to be mutually exclusive conditions…

Thoughts

When He Was Bad is a fantastic anthology with two yummy, steamy novellas. Just like Howl For It. They are both collections that are fun and light. But with a seriously lustful strain throughout. I absolutely adored both of the novellas in this, and I look forward to reading them again when I need a short distraction from reality.

There was honestly so much enjoyment from reading this. I read each novella in one sitting – they were just so good that I didn’t want to put them down. That used to be an impressive feat. Now I have a toddler, and it is more of an accomplishment… at least in my world.

Both the novellas in this anthology are shifter romances. There is plenty of steam and deliciously dominant males. Two worlds that I loved diving into and look forward to getting a glimpse of again.

Thoughts

Howl For It is a fantastic collection of two wonderful, lusty novellas. They both fit nicely together in this collection, with the paranormal romance and werewolves as the centre point. Yet, Laurenston and Eden have two distinctly different voices that you will fall in love with. Both of these novellas are fast paced and filled with a decent amount of death and mayhem. A little bit of betrayal and a whole lot of strong males who can howl at the moon. Definitely a fun anthology to sweep you away on a moonlit night.

This is one of those anthologies that I’m really glad I bought, I look forward to reading it again and again. There was something kind of sweet about both of these stories. Even as they are tales that involve a whole lot of blood and death. I might already have both of these authors in my TBR, but I most definitely want more!
