Synopsis

Clay’s point of view of Jeremy’s ascension to Alpha.

Thoughts

I’d always wondered how Jeremy became Alpha. It’s obvious that although he is capable of fighting, he often choices not to pursue the past time. It was also difficult to understand how such a reportedly horrifying and devious character, such as Malcolm, ever had a chance of claiming power over a group that I very quickly fell in love with throughout Bitten. Ascension tells that story, alongside more tales of Clay’s teenage years and, even, the creation of his terrifying reputation amongst the Mutts.

Power struggles and negotiations occur in every aspect of our lives, in animal groups and packs (such as wolf packs), the knowledge of this is much stronger. Therefore, it is easy to conceive that a group of people who are half man, half wolf would be almost obsessed with hierarchy, power and dominance. For characters like Clay, who is more wolf than human, this is an easy aspect of his nature to claim and embrace. However, in Jeremy’s case, it is a constant battle to balance the two halves of his nature. Whilst he doesn’t feel the need to constantly prove his dominance like others, he also has the drive to protect those he considers family. Yet, this protection comes at a cost. In naturally occurring wolf societies, the strong protect the weak, and the weak obey the strong, this is obvious within Jeremy’s every action. Protecting and caring for the weak and the family is the most important aspect of his life, and it is this power play that leads to the rollercoaster ride of emotions in Ascension.

Synopsis

Savage is about Jeremy Danvers finding Clay.

Thoughts

I just LOVED finding out the story behind Clayton’s transformation into a werewolf. The dry wit and humour that characterises him throughout Elena’s tales in The Women of the Otherworld series shines beautifully from the pages of this novella. Clay’s voice shows us that our preconceptions of people can be wrong – from the very moment he is intelligent and cunning, combining this childish mind with that of a wolf made him a slightly awkward and successful predator from the age of seven. Even if he was unable to physically show his prowess to others who were far bigger and more terrifying.

The break down of this novella into short chapters helped to give the entire story flow. It also broke up the time through which Clayton’s trust and dedication to Jeremy was built. Where I didn’t understand this level of devotion in the greater Women of the Otherworld novels, Clayton’s childhood (pre- and post-wolf) finally helped me to see why he chose to effectively become his alpha’s shadow. His loyalty and slight quirks are so beautifully explained throughout this story, and where some of his actions towards Elena later can be seen as possessive and indications of an abusive relationship, in the light of Clayton’s upbringing and absorption into the Pack, they can be understood. The depth of his love and regard for those he considers his is seen through his own, unassuming eyes. And honestly, it’s this loyalty (and incredible dry wit and humour) that makes Clay my favourite Women of the Otherworld man.

February 2017

february-2017

I’ve had a thoroughly enjoyable month of reviews for February. Starting out with some really sweet romances, and progressing to many diverse short stories, it’s been a month that has really reminded me to be true to myself and those who love me. The addition of a new puppy to our family has certainly helped this feeling… although it hasn’t done good things for the covers of some of my books!

So here are the reviews of this month in all their glory (or obscurity):

Synopsis

About Jeremy’s mother and Jeremy’s conception.

Thoughts

I never quite understood throughout the Women of the Otherworld stories just why Jeremy’s father was so horrific – what it was that could turn a father so completely against his child. Yes, it sets up the character and storyline beautifully, but the rationale behind such a horrid creature has long fascinated me. And, finally, parts of Jeremy’s heritage and Malcolm’s rage are bought to light in this stunning short story. Although it is guaranteed to leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Although Infusion doesn’t completely explain Jeremy’s mysterious allure and powers, there are so many hints throughout. Likewise, his similarity to his grandfather and the incredible strength of his mother are highlighted in a way that makes it easy to understand the serious and contemplative man who he becomes. I love origin stories in general, and none can harken back to a character’s origin more succinctly than that of their very conception and birth.

The Week That Was – 26 Feb 2017

Classes start back up tomorrow, so this week has been all about running in circles trying to get organised. I have a whole day left to finish getting my stationary, and figure out just where to go at a new uni campus. And honestly… although I’ve done everything… I’m still absolutely convinced that there is something that I’ve forgotten… hopefully that feeling is going to go away soon!

I actually managed to do a little letter writing this week too. And I FINALLY got my first book to start my research on nazi germany for Cass’ story. Finally things are moving ahead…. I just now need to make sure that I find the time to dedicate to my writing projects…

Synopsis

About Aaron and how he got reborn into a vampire.

Thoughts

It took me a little while to place exactly who Aaron was in the Women of the Otherworld universe. However, after two pages, I was able to finally understand who this illusive do-gooder was. The appearance of Cassandra helps to further the identification of this character – a vampire member of the supernatural council.

Armstrong’s use of vampirism in her stories takes yet another turn which I didn’t expect – it is not just a process which occurs through biting, but also an inherited trait for some. This different take on what is possibly a genetic mutation to enhance a member of society’s survival was a really nice new approach. As was Aaron’s approach to the required one death a year, and even those whom he fed off of. Although he feels guilt at the taking of another’s life force, he finds a way in which to do it in a conscientious way.

Synopsis

As a curious six-year-old, Clayton didn’t resist the bite—he asked for it. But surviving as a lone child-werewolf was more than he could manage—until Jeremy came along and taught him how to straddle the human-werewolf worlds, gave him a home…and introduced him to the Pack. So begins this volume, featuring three of the members of the American Pack—a hierarchical founding family where bloodlines mean everything and each day presents a new, thrilling, and often deadly challenge. For as Clayton grows from a wild child to a clever teen who tests his beloved mentor at every turn, he must learn not only to control his animal instincts but to navigate Pack politics—including showing his brutal archnemesis, Malcolm, who the real Alpha is…

Thoughts

These four short stories may be centred upon the North American werewolf pack, but for me, it was mostly about Jeremy. With the first short story telling of his origins, and the last explaining them and his quirks to his adult (and fully realised) self. Whilst Clay’s story is also outlined throughout this, it is also told in the light of his devotion to Jeremy – after all, until Elena, Jeremy is also the centre of Clayton’s world.

Although I have loved every single character and story that Armstrong has rolled out in her Women of the Otherworld series, it is always Elena and the werewolf Pack that I enjoy returning to the most. Maybe because they are the ones I first fell in love with, maybe because there is just something about their characters that continues to draw me back. Regardless, reading a collection of short stories that focus upon their origins and history left me with a novel that I found impossible to put down.

Synopsis

Have you ever wondered what happens to a loved ones belongings once they pass on?

A fob watch holds a psychic imprint that takes the newest owner on a journey that leads her to her fate.

Thoughts

A Piece of Time was a very quaint short story – a tale of love, fate and the importance of family. The sweetness of this story shines from the pages left me smiling in contentment at the conclusion of this tale. Like all of Harding’s stories, there is an understanding of the spiritual world that I rarely find in good stories – instead of a bastardisation of such beliefs to suit the story, the story has been built up around the practices and beliefs themselves.

The idea that a fob watch is able to hold such a psychic imprint and love that it will always return to its owner is an enviable one. I can’t imagine owning a possession that is so connected to my being that it will always find its way back to me. The idea that it could also be used to bring two people together, when they are so obviously meant for each other just helps to build on this beautiful ideal that is displayed throughout A Piece of Time.

Synopsis

Riane finds herself stuck in limbo one snowy, stormy night. And nothing goes as she expects.

Thoughts

The ending of this story was completely different to what I expected – and honestly, all the better for it. Riane’s strength and independence, her very place in the world is placed under strain and, like diamonds placed under pressure, the resulting heroine that is displayed is a gem beyond compare. The haunting ending also hints at many happy events in her future, even though, at the conclusion of the story, and following her final decision, there is no hints as to what this may be.

From the beginning, Riane’s romance with Marcus is both tantalisingly beautiful and eerily unsettling. It is impossible to quite put your finger on just why it doesn’t sit well and there is something that doesn’t quite add up. The storyline tears you in two directions – one part is embracing the luxury and romance of Marcus’ domain; yet another, quieter aspect of the story screams at you that not all is as it seems. This fine balance between the two conditions of Riane’s fast-burning flame makes the entire story impossible to put down. The haunting hints of the bridal waif compound this in a way that is so vivid and spine tingling that this is one of my favourite ghost stories thus far.

The theme of forgiveness followed the overarching idea of being oneself for oneself (rather than sacrificing everything for the sake of love). The very act of forgiveness helped to remove the lingering effects of limbo on the ghosts, and in doing so, allowed Riane to hope for her own future. The closure provided by this picturesque moment will remain splashed across my eyelids for a long time yet.

Gogo Mama by Sally Sara

Pace: Slow
Format: Novel
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Year: 2006
5th sentence, 74th page: If you go to fetch for water or firewood and people start running, you have left your children and run alone.

Synopsis

I’M SITTING IN A $30 HOTEL ROOM IN UGANDA WONDERING WHAT THE HELL I’VE GOT MYSELF INTO. THIS IS DAY ONE OF GOGO MAMA. I DON’T EVEN KNOW ALL THE NAMES OF THE TWELVE WOMEN WHO WILL FILL THIS BOOK; ONLY THE JOURNEY WILL REVEAL THEM.

Gogo Mama is a journey of discovery into the lives of a dozen very different African women. They include the survivor of a brutal attack by Ugandan rebels; an Egyptian belly dancer turned movie star; an escapee from slavery in Ghana; Zanzibar’s most famous living diva; a former child soldier from Liberia; a grandmother fighting AIDS in South Africa; and a pioneering midwife from Timbuktu. They speak with complete candour both about their astonishing experiences and about the way they live now, in some of the most hostile and exotic parts of the continent.

While introducing these inspiring women, award-winning journalist Sally Sara takes us on a trip across Africa, in all its complexity – from the frenetic townships of Johannesburg, to a clifftop village in Mali; from the horror of the frontline of war in Sudan, to the glamour of Cairo nightclubs.

Gogo Mama is a vivid, illuminating and haunting composite picture of an extraordinary land, in the words of the people who know it best.

Thoughts

This story left me feeling… humbled. Just humbled. These twelve women will touch you in a way that you can’t imagine, and their lives set amidst the beauty of Africa are guaranteed to linger in your mind’s eye for years after you close the cover. It is just an incredibly powerful, moving and honest set of stories. The truth is met unflinchingly and without hesitation. Yet, in all of Sara’s interviews, there is no anger and bitterness, rather, a simple acceptance for what has been suffered and an optimism for what they may face in the future.

From a survivor of the Rwandan genocide to a world-famous belly dancer, each of these twelve stories is different and unique. They are insights into another country, another world. One which I can’t even fathom. The range of stories, from the downright depressing, to the uplifting are a fantastic window through which to view such a varied continent. There is no feeling of repetition or even judgement throughout the stories. Sara manages to shine the light on every single experience, use the nuances and feelings from every single interview to weave a textured tale that you will never forget.

Yet, it isn’t just the tales of Sara’s journey and the women whom she had the pleasure of encountering that makes Gogo Mama such an enthralling novel. It is the vivid descriptions of the African countryside, the daily activities that are undertaken in some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world. Picturesque, yet war-torn. The vividness and beauty of the countries plays a haunting note to the tales which are spun by women who, against all odds, have triumphed in their own lives and found a way to carve out their own reality.
